I don't like any of the EU that was written for children.  It should have its own category.  (Anything Jar Jar f|<mg Binks should be deleted from Earths records).  All new Star Wars story stuff lost its appeal to me the moment I walked out of the theater when I saw Jar Jar Binks - and had to wait in line from everyone else that was trying to get out.  I am not even exited about the new movie.  I guarantee you that the McDonald's Happy meal toys were created before the script of the new Star Wars movies was even finished., no matter what they are promising now.

I just chalk this up to a very small ship up close to a very large ship.  A few mm out and the Corvette will not have two legal attacks on the Victory.  A 5 deg rotation clockwise and the Victory will have a legal firing solution on either the front of port hull zones of the Corvette.  And the Victory -  although having alot of weapons, may not even be able to full aim at that small area because it is a large ship.  We're splitting hairs here.

    The basic rules for attack.

Declare attacking hull and defending hull
Corvette port hull to Vic :
    "Measure" Line of Sight
Yes, does not cross the defender's hull zone markings.
    Not Obstructed
    "Measure" Firing Arc
Yes, a sliver of the base is withing the port arc of the Corvette
    Measure Range
    Duh, its close range

    Roll die.

wjgo got a reaction from patrious in Squadron command trumps engagement rules?
If another squadron moves close to it, the other two squadrons would have to resolve their engagement effect, which - could be an ongoing thing for 5 turns, before the third squadron is involved because the effect can not occur again for the two ships already engaged.  So, if Engagement is an effect because its starting word is "while" - it breaks itself.  Everything in this manual that is an effect, actually talks about the effect, and uses the word effect.  Engagement section does not.  I am not so sure if Engagement trumping Squadron command is an intention or spirit the game.

Prize sniping is this game, I don't think can exist.

I used to play Whiz Kids Mechwarrior.  In that game, they would issue rare, "hero" pieces, different classes of heroes - some super rare, and some more common.  You couldn't buy them in a store.  They were issued randomly in closed sealed boxes.  One piece could win the game unless the opponent had a couple less that very rare pieces or had very lucky die rolls.  One could basically buy a "I win" army on Ebay unless they were at some regional championship with the other people that went to Ebay.  Many people played the game and never even bought a booster pack.

I went to a local small, small store tournament where - down the road were clusters of Amish farms - very remote.  Some guy showed up, never there before.  He had about $850 in miniatures based on current Ebay prices [probably smaller than Magic stuff even]- I never bought any of these pieces - but I would look because I was tempted because I would lose every match with regular pieces until I stumbled on a decent piece in a booster.  Game was over in 2 rounds - that's all it took because the pieces were that good.  Of course he won the tournament.  He sniped an area with a small player base with less chances of a mega dough-rolling Ebay purchaser that could even hurt his game play.  He wins a rare piece and then offers to sell it to us.  His army was perfect, so his game prizes go to Ebay.

And that is one of the [many] reasons no one plays Mechwarrior anymore.  But in X-Wing, all the pieces are "open source."  You don't have to win a lottery buying booster packs to get a good piece.

I think almost all of these builds will need more TIEs.  TIE swarms or named TIEs.  You are guaranteed to face a Rebel opponent with at least 2 ships with 2 anti-squadron rolls each (in addition to normal fire).  In a 400 point game, count on 3-4 ships rolling double die at each squadron at medium range if there is no other ship to shoot at.  Their Nebulon-B's are cheap.  An Assault Frigates variation also sports 2 anti-squadron rolls.  TIESs will be needed to counter their squadrons, and their extra anti-squadron rolls.  Going heavy on ships lets the Rebel spam 10 point Y-Wings.  I wouldn't want to see 6-7 Y-Wings with 2-3 A-Wing Escorts and only a smattering of TIEs to blunt them.  Perhaps I am wrong in this assessment.

Reading a lot of posts, and observing posted images of matches, it seems to me that many, if most of those Rebel players are putting themselves at a disadvantage.  What are your thoughts on this?

Keep the Rebel Fleet together   What I am seeing, are Rebel players giving the SD firing arcs.  If the fleet is together, and keeps the fleet in the same firing arc of the SD, the SD will only get one shot at the fleet per round.  Keeping the fleet together allows the Neb, and Corvette to roll 2-3 anti-squadron die at any TIE that threatens the fleet.  They will be going after X-Wings anyway, but if the X-Wings are still close it will help.  The Nebs for fullforce, and the Corv, I believe need to get into range 2.  Keeping X-Wings alive until that turn to attack with squadron commands or good piloting will help rolls pushing for crits.

Split the fleet only for objectives.

And, place your obstacles in a line from any deployment area corner to your ships actual deployment at distance increments of 1.  Anything to reduce any damage rolls or force a maneuvering command dial, or force a turn of the SD, or even cause an obstacle damage.

"As long as it is suitably effective enough and cost enough points to call an Executor, so shall it be."

I am not sure how one can go from 100 some laser batteries on an ISD, to 4000 batteries and not have a side arc attack die pool of at least 120 die, and still call the ship an Executor.  12 die in the attack pool is only a 90% reduction in its firepower relative to an ISD.   Scaling the ship in size is one thing.  Then neutering in an ever more ludicrous manner just so this ship can fit in a game without killing the game?  Then, so one player can have his pretty model, the opposing player would need a 600-1800 point fleet just to match that pretty model?

Wave 2 won't be out until Christmas.  Just watch the new Star Wars movie - and whatever ships are in that movie - make a perfect selling advertisement for Wave 3, if FFG is allowed to get IP on the movie stuff in time for a Wave 3 release.  It looks liek they are looking at 6 month releases, so they should have time.

Yeah right.  I had a conversation with the actual owner/partner of my most local "FLGS."  While he was participating in a store run X-Wing miniature tournament he told me; "We will have no plans to, and we will not be stocking Armada in the future.  You can buy X-Wing here though."  The other game store (actually more of a Comic Book store that has a small wall of miniatures) had this to say; "We stopped having X-Wing and Attack Wing tournaments.  We might have an Armada box when it releases.  Our other store [50 minutes away] might have some Attack Wing tournaments.  Call them and find out."  I suppose having such tournaments will impede their newly gained status as a Core Store for Magic the Gathering.

They don't want to support it, but I am to shell out extra money to support them?  Will they contract out to my business I run in return?  ha ha.  They are nice people, but I am not a charity and there is zero chance in their minds they will invite Armada players to their store.

I was a PRO SSD guy, but I'm willing to budge.   After playing the game a bunch I actually don't want a 2 foot (or longer) long ship taking up the whole board.  The game is actually really really good the way it is, and I'd rather see more ships in it's current scale.

HOWEVER I think it could be possible to create a SSD if it were more of an objective based thing.  Essentially it would have to take up an entire side of the board, so at least 3 feet, and it'd be stationary.  For the mission it woudl have to be (mostly)disabled, and the rebel fleet is trying to finish it off, while the Imperials are trying to save it.  The rebels have basically 6 turns to finish it off, or they lose.  Something like that could work, but it won't happen because you're looking at a 200 dollar model for a single scenario - and the model would essentially be a paperweight.   Things like that tend to be better for home-made custom scenarios rather than official FFG product.

Maybe we are jumping ahead here.  In 2018, FFG might release:

Star Wars:  Ships of Biblical Proportions

The Core Set will include a Yavin Death Star and a Praetor class ship.  The Rebel side will come with an A-Wing, X-Wing and 2 MC80's.  Tsunami 1 would include the Executor and the Viscount.  This time, FFG will include playmats for the required 24 x 72 play area.  FFG will move its gaming center to a basketball court so they have host 4 matches a day over a weekend for tournaments.

Because of internet grumbling, FFG will create a TIE Defender Super Class 5 inch model for Tsunami 1, and likewise the Rebels get the Millennium Falcon in a 4 inch model with the ESB paint job.

Whatever happens with this strategy, it will force the Rebel player into actions he was not planning for, and force squadron movements.  That could be just what the Imperial player might want.  He still has 100 points on the board. The Rebel player can't make a mistake to counter it, and will have to do alot of measuring for the current round and where his ships will be in the next turn.  Either give it away or make some good guesses for range.  I do think this is an Imperial advantage - because - a title card, hero squadron and working to together with a medium capital.

Someone is going to do this, and look forward to hearing about it.
