Absolutely love that corvette!

Part of the problem is listed in the link that was originally posted (which I thought was also a great write-up). I don't know if any of you have ever experienced similar issues to these, but when they happen, there is often a moment of not realizing what the appropriate response is. There is a sense of questioning just how big of a deal it really is. Oftentimes, as the author of the piece pointed out, the anger and the realization of the seriousness of the event only set in later. So, sometimes immediate action isn't practical, because it's hard to go around in life prepared to deal with these situations at a moment's notice. That would imply, on some level, you're expecting it, which is a pretty horrible mindset to walk around with. I'm glad this was posted though, and that this kind of thing can be discussed on this community. Aside from giving me something to do that doesn't involve whining about the K-Wing, I think it's important that these events get widespread coverage within the fan community so that we can all be better prepared to deal with them moving forward. I think most of us hate this kind of behavior and don't want to see it at the events we attend, but we can't deal with it if we don't know it's there. Thanks Radzap for posting this.

I don't think Disney had anything to do with this. They seem more geared towards doing away with the EU than propping up the worst parts of it.
-
I have no idea what that even means. Did you miss the deleted scenes in which they went around interviewing starfighters on their gender identities? Spoiler alert: the Y-wing may surprise you. This is tempting me to produce a line of N-1s painted to resemble the color schemes on Volkswagen New Beetles.
-
Yeah, the Dunelizard makes more sense because it is a lower agility (which the new Kihraxz is), higher firepower (which the new Kihraxz is) more resilient (which the Kihraxz is) version of the Scyk (whose paint job the Kihraxz stole despite being Black Sun). So, that's how I think it fits better.
-
You know how much I love Scum, Joe. They've been my favorite faction for a while. But the Scum X-wing should have been the Dunelizard or the Vaksai. I'd have bought at least 4 Vaksais. There is no telling how many Dunelizards I'd have bought. Maybe all of them? But this thing...meh...not worth 15 dollars.

I have no idea what that even means. He means it's the hairdresser's car of starfighters, I think. Like the space Mazda Miata.

That's not a problem with my argument. That was fully acknowledged within my argument, including the last line of the paragraph you quoted. I totally agree. However, they have to please somebody, so they do owe their player base something.
-
No, sorry. I sympathize with your frustration, but they don't owe any of us anything. Actually, they literally do. Their jobs are to make money, they make money by ensuring a loyal customer base, they ensure a loyal customer base by producing things people like/catering to their interests. So, in a very real sense, they owe me, and you, and everybody else on the forums quite a bit. It's a balancing act, and no one person's interests can dominate a discussion where this much product is sold worldwide, but they do, in fact, owe each and every one of us. Well, the leadership at FFG has a fiduciary duty to those with shares of the corporation (I think it's privately held). How they discharge that duty is up to them, and--if they could build a business case for it--that might plausibly include something like "Okay, no more releases for X-wing Miniatures. We're going to focus on design and production for Armada and Imperial Assault for the next year or so, and we'll be back with a rebooted X-wing Second Edition in Q4 2016." I don't actually think they will do that, but they could. We'd all be furious, and probably less likely to invest in FFG products in the future, but c'est la vie: corporations are sociopaths, without emotions or loyalties or really any conscience other than what appears beneath the bottom line. So just because it's not good for their customers doesn't mean they wouldn't consider it. I do think that sociopathic corporations focused on short-term financial gain are a bad idea, and I really like and appreciate FFG's apparent stance that happy customers stay loyal. But even so, it's more of a balancing act than you've indicated: the customer base has (at least) one set of goals, the health of the game has another, the shareholders have yet another, the licensor gets a say, and all of those things are constrained by things like production and shipping issues. So, although I suspect we disagree less than I initially thought, I firmly believe that no individual forum poster is owed (or, more importantly, is likely to get) exactly what he or she wants to see. I don't disagree, but smart corporations tend to keep customers happy, as there is often choice in the marketplace. I'm sure if FFG were powerful enough to shove lame waves down our throats and force us to accept them, that would be a possibility. However, for a miniatures game which requires a rather expensive investment to play at any level beyond the core set, that's a poor model. On some level, the ship design matters. I'm sure there are some people on this forum who would continue to purchase new waves even if they consisted of plastic 1/270 scale models of cardboard refrigerator boxes on sticks, but I'm not one of those, and I suspect the majority of people wouldn't. So, clearly they have a vested interest in producing ships we want in order to keep us as their customer base. When they stop producing ships I want, I will be gone from the game in a heartbeat. There are too many viable alternatives out there competing for my limited supply of dollars. One of those, Shapeways, is going to be making far more money from me in the coming months than FFG as a result of this wave and their GCW forward policy. One person doing that doesn't make it a bad financial decision, obviously, so for FFG's sake, I hope they produce waves others really love.

God forbid they just unabashedly make prequels stuff. I think after the K-Wing they owe me an N-1.

Creative Writing Assignment + New X-wing Wave = LORE

This is turning out really well. Keep it up! -
We don't. "We don't need cards to know that a four hull one shield ship is a medium fighter. That's the same number of hit points as the X-Wing, and people have already said it's going to be the Scum's X-wing equivalent. I think you would agree with that yourself if not for the fact that it supports my argument for the Vaksai or Dunelizard as a better alternative." Arbitrary designations applied to fictional ships with inconsistent classification systems. Statwise, the B-wing also has higher hit points than the TIE defender. The TIE fighter has a stronger hull than the E-wing. The VT-19 has more hull than the GR-75. Do these match the lore? Hell no. They are where they are as a result of playtesting and game mechanics. Trying to say "this many hit points means this classification" is as silly as saying "this ship has this many barrels and therefore must have this attack dice value." People are saying it is Scum's X-wing equivalent. People with just as little information as you and I, a picture, a name and some blurry numbers. As I said, we have no cards. We do not have an assessment of how this ship performs in game. What defines a "light", "medium" and "heavy" fighter in Star Wars? Nothing. Their classifications are as weak and inconsistent as those for capital ships, both the Republic Cruiser (the little red thing from the start of TPM), the Gozanti Cruiser and the MC80 Mon Calamari Star Cruiser are somehow all Cruisers. The Venator sometimes gets called a "Jedi Cruiser." Even in X-Wing you can see this. Both the M-3A and TIE interceptor are interceptors, but is there any corcordance in their statlines? Not really. Star Wars ships cannot be modelled based on real world aviation because there is no underlying force forcing it to, and thus the various content creators will do things how they want to. They decided to make the Kihraxz to fill the role they wanted filled, and they playtested it to hone its statline, point cost and dial. There could be any number of reasons why they didn't se the Vaksai or the Eurofighter Typhoon with an extractor fan underneath. Maybe LFL didn't like it? Maybe they have plans to release one of those two in the future? Maybe it was Christian T Petersen's ship of choice when he played SWG and of all the equal Scum SWG ships (they're all brownish, early EU looking starfighters with oft unpronoucable names) they could pick from he went with one he personally was fond of rather than the one you were. So yes, your argument is a subjective one. It is in no way an objective truth that the statline we haven't seen is absolutely incorrect for a "light fighter" and thus a "medium" one must be selected instead. So, from the new release page...

I Don't Understand: The hate over the K-Wing
Nightshrike replied to Corellian Corvette's topic in X-Wing
Yeah, those are not ball turrets, those are cameras and sensor systems. A ball turret is a turret that is ball-shaped that houses an individual manning a gun. That's what the K-Wing has. -

I like most of your post, Kinetic, but what's sillier than the K-Wing that was actually on-screen in a movie? -
Right. That's high galactic, which is apparently the ancient poetic language of the galaxy. It was probably there to showcase the Death Star employees' high level of achieved literacy.
-
Was thinking about it, actually. The only issue is the ARC-170 doesn't really have a turret, it would be more of a front and rear-arc design.

TFA Trailer II Brings 2 Billion Dollars to Disney
Nightshrike replied to Imperial Advisor Arem Heshvaun's topic in X-Wing
That headline made my day. You should write for the Onion, they'd probably pick that story up. -
I would have far preferred an all-prequels wave, but I'm probably one of the few in that camp.

Creative Writing Assignment + New X-wing Wave = LORE
Nightshrike replied to Corellian Corvette's topic in X-Wing
Edit: Addressed to President That's an interesting assessment. I'm an F-22 fangirl. I think it's the most beautiful aircraft ever built. It is awesome in so many ways. The issue is that it doesn't have an enemy. Barring a shooting war with Russia or China, there just isn't an enemy air force with a sufficient number of advanced fighters to warrant it. However, I would disagree with the performance aspect. Yes, fuel economy is an issue, but the F-22 has the capacity to effectively destroy any aerial opposition in the world at will, and that's pretty cool. One thing that I've always been confused by is that we don't have a stealth Wild Weasel. I would think that a stealth Wild Weasel (or primary anti-radar attack plane) would be basically the number one mission for a stealth aircraft. You send in the stealth wild weasels, completely dismantle the enemy radar network and sam network without being seen, and then you roll in with everything else. -
Creative Writing Assignment + New X-wing Wave = LORE

I feel like a contemporary re-release of the HBO special, focused on either the F-22, F-35 or Stryker gun platform (though the base vehicle is fine) would be of some value. ...I also sort-of wonder about the area of that mess that Burton didn't extrapolate on: How in the world did the idiot cronies manage to take the reigns over everyone else? Cronies and their leash-holders operate in pack mentalities. Most honest people tend to not notice this or operate alone, allowing the issue to grow and fester. I work in a defense-related industry and this is true even at my relatively low level. Though as an aside. the F-22 is fantastic. The F-35 would have been fantastic had they limited the role(s) it was supposed to fill. It has become a clusterduck because of rank excess and mission bloat. The Stryker is in some ways the same- the base concept for what it was supposed to do is fine, but bloat has hurt us. Good stuff so far GG. Continue on! You ninja'd me there, but suffice it to say, I completely agree. Go Raptor! -

I think the F-22 is fantastic. The F-35 suffers the problem that the Fighter Mafia cautioned against - a one-size fits all solution to a problem. As to the idiot cronies thing. Some people feel Burton overplayed the corruption going on with the Bradley, others defend the Bradley, and some have questioned Burton's account. On the whole though, the issue with the Pentagon in the 1970s and 1980s was something John Boyd termed "gold plating." Every project had to have the military equivalent of pork barrel spending tacked on to it. Also, though military missions are often quite specific, politicians loved the idea of multi-role projects. Why fund two projects for two missions when you can fund one project for all the missions? Of course, the issue with that is what Pentagon Wars lampooned so strongly. It's what we're seeing with the F-35 right now too. -
A ladybug M3A is genius!

Does it go into the difference in US and Japanese carrier doctrine, and the ways in which the physical designs of the carriers gave the US ships an advantage in refuel/rearm times for their fighters?
-
It's not just you by any stretch of the imagination. Apology accepted. As to minor/non-issues, I think that's in the eye of the beholder. If the ships included in the game are not an issue to you, more power to you. I suspect though that there is a point/level at which they would be an issue for you too. We just have a different threshold. Missed your edit there. Ugly is never my problem. Functional is my problem. I just hate things that look like they were cobbled together by children, which, in my opinion, the K-Wing does. I have a hard time believing people are sinking thousands of dollars into producing little models of it, and an even harder time believing they'll be able to successfully charge 15-20 dollars for it retail. I get that the fun of the game is somewhat divorced from the identity of the ships, but in a sense it's not too. Part of the coolness of the game is the ships themselves, the Star Wars identity. Part of the fun for me is just seeing other people's repaints. Some of them are unbelievable. I think little details like that add a huge amount to the game for me as far as enjoyment goes. The converse of that, is that little details like the K-Wing being a hideous beast detract a huge amount from my enjoyment. That may not be the same for you, but I hope you'll respect my right to interact with the game differently.
