I disagree that Descent got more epic. I believe "epic" means character growth, and generally Second Ed had less of it. But both editions have much to offer. Let's compare the various modes of Descent, from shortest to longest, and their levels of character growth.
    1. 2nd Ed One-Off: 30-90 min, no growth.
    2. 2nd Ed Print on Demand Expansions: 1-2 hours, minor growth.
    3. 1st Ed One-Off: 4-6 hours, moderate growth.
    4. 2nd Ed Campaign (standard or app): 15-25 hours: high growth.
    5. 1st Ed Campaign: 60-100 hours: extreme growth.
So as you can see, simply add more time and the game becomes more epic. That's why fans of the original game say the one-offs were good because they always felt epic. Second Edition originally required the campaign to achieve growth, but later added PoD expansions for an experience similar to, but lighter than, the 1st Ed.
There are many ways to play Descent and with all the content out there, everyone can find something. The trick is to remember that if you can't commit to a campaign, there exist options that offer some character growth in a shorter session - it just doesn't exist in the core box of 2nd ed.

It's a significantly different and awesome game. To me Descent 1ed has much more of a dungeon crawl, exploring huge sprawling dungeons. 2ed is more of a tactical mini's game where some quests feel more like capture the flag than anything else. I've actually been buying up 1ed recently as I don't get a chance to game with my friend who owned it all anymore.

One thing that was cool with the game night kits is they brought back the dungeon sprawl and exploration aspects of the game. I'd love to see a bit more of that same feel in some of the future RtL DLC.

    Isheim.
    1. Tomb of Ice is the second highest rated original expansion after Road to Legend. Recognizing the popularity of their most popular expansion they incorporated it's theme into the base game. Tomb of Ice on the other hand, hasn't seen a lot of attention...
    2. Cold is the least common trait in the game, it really could use some love and an expansion that featured it heavily could boost sales for a couple of H&M packs and get some really cool monsters more play time.

Well, the app is a real game changer. They don't have to risk the sort of resources they would with a print run. They could do an expansion moving between the different regions of Terrinoth by boat which would have a lot of synergy with owning the various expansions.
And they could use boat  mechanics along the lines of Starfinder or make it more like the travel step putting it entirely within the app which could elevate the need to make a significant gamble in the gimmick being well received.
So long as it were to come out far enough into Road to Legend that the fan base is sold on this version of decent *shrug* what's the harm.

Ok, I will explain my point. Lets use the biggest resource of clean data I'm aware of-the BGG detailed ratings page. English is not my native language so sorry if I made some misspells. But raw numbers are universal.
If you have any better survey method, fell free to recalculate that if you want. I will be happy to read it.
Sea of blood-is rated 7.4 by BGG community. The number of BGG users that declared owning the game is 2901 people and it was rated 641 times since its implementation into database of BGG.  So thats about 30,5% of owners that took their time and rated the title. Rather small number, isn't it?
Of that 30,5% there when placed into NPS satisfaction rating(1-6 Detractors,7-8-Neutral,9-10 Promoters), we have a 148 Detractors, 344 Neutral and 149 Promoters. So even if we just throw out the neutrals(that is standard of most NPS surveys) you get a tie between the promoters and detractors as set of 23.2 and 23.1 for the group of people who did mind to rate it, NPS is 0,1%, from  30,5 percent of all declared owners in that BGG source. Biggest group, 53,3% reviewers was neutral to positive and gave it 7 or 8 rating.
If you count neutrals+positives you get 76,5% of reviewers neutral to happy with their game.
The highest rated expansion for 1ed. Descent is Road to legend with rating of 8.0, own by 4372 of BGG users, and rated by 2107 of them. Thats 48.1% of owners who gave it a rating.
Of that 2107 we see Detractors:276 Neutrals:1005 Promoters:829. That gives us a score D:13.9  N:47.63 Pro:39.29 in the group 48.1 percent of reviewers who own the game by BGG base. NPS for Road to Legend is 26.21 for the group of . Again 47.6% of reviewers was neutral to positive.
If you count neutrals+positives you get 86,5% of reviewers happy with their game.
In both cases, more than 50% of owners did not even rate the title. Mostly because they just want to play it, or have other fun things to do instead of spending their time on sites such as BGG and do ratings/reviews.  And that was my point when I wrote that I don't always trust in such data.

P.S. As for pirates theme in fantasy setting. Don't mistake "Pirates of Caribbean" type of Jack Sparrow thing with for example, LOTR Corsairs of Umbar or Greyjoy's House from GOT.  They seem to fit fantasy theme quite well. Almost every big fantasy universe have corsairs/pirates in that kind. Even Conan the Cimmerian dealt with corsairs in some stories.
P.S.2 Antivaxxer plot -man that made my day Good one.

If you both would mind- my desired expansion is mountain/ice themed or desert one:) I stated that out in second post of this thread. I like the Sea of blood-tropical jungle(some of existing map tiles would also work) scenery, but not definitely the "nautical combat" and other mechanics that are indeed clumsy.
I've played SoB, along the others expansions long time ago and enjoyed it- back then. But  II ed. has been more crafted and rid of most I ed. flaws. Shortly after release of SoB whole line was killed by FFG, and no other 1ed. reprint saw a daylight, for any expansion or the core game(as I can tell, maybe there was some printing made, but I don't remember any). I don't think that sole SoB alone was the cause, but the FFG financial trouble, around that time they killed also DUST, Tannhauser and few other product lines. It took them around 3 years to get back into that kind of stuff.  If one was unable to get the core game, then there was no reason to get SoB and RtL expansion- RtL is also the box expansion one can get out new and foiled by today(or was able not so long ago).  And still its best scoring expansion for 1ed Descent by BGG.  Most people tend to go after legacy stuff in release order anyway.
I've sold my whole first edition of Descent stuff without regret when second edition came out. Especially for poor minis that was just plain ugly. So I don't really focus on that legacy stuff.
In my opinion, they could extract anything that worked out nice(monsters/lore) in Sea of blood/Island of dread for Runebound expansion.  And remade the ships/travels part into something that can be done solely in app- for example hex map, with island system, whirlpools, underwater caves/locations, or shore to be reveled(ever played first parts of Final Fantasy series?- kinda like world map from that stuff) maybe random generated .  Just don't kill mindlessly the themes that have some potential. We all can agree that straight implementation would not work in this case as 1&2 editions are whole different games.

I remember when Road to legend and Sea of blood came out(**** just realized that was around 10years ago). Problem with both expansions why they are not so popular as previous ones was not related to rules. Box brought very nice stuff but as I can remember it did not contain any new monster and heroes minis and that was the point where most people tend off from this box when it comes to buy something new. It was targeted for advanced players who like to play long, and self made campaigns, and not the Sunday Warriors who play one or two encounters a year. When it first got into the shop I used to work at the time, all 6 boxes delivered sold out the same day it arrived, same as Road to legend some time before that. And that was in Poland, where client base for this game(1 ed only available in English, with clumsy bootleg self translated manuals etc.) was rather small.

I have near everything for this game, and I'm beyond disgusted that it's been so long without news of an update.  There is no excuse for a year of no news, good or bad.  I've only the hero and monster sets to buy, and I'm not touching them now until I hear that there's more content coming.  It does not take a year to make a new campaign for the app.  It does not take a year to "adjust your trajectory".  I see no evidence that Asmodee cares AT ALL about this franchise.
I have ZERO interest in the rest of the Runebound/Terrinoth franchise.  I'm here for the dungeon crawl.  They can make their battlefield miniature combat games all they want, but I won't be buying them.
I do not own any of the Imperial Assault stuff, because no one in my group wants to play it.  If an app appears for it I would likely buy in for solo play, but that is the ONLY scenario in which that would happen.
These are 3 very different settings, and they do not cross over nearly as much as Asmodee seems to think.
At the very least they should do a final box to cap things off properly, like they did with Arkham Horror.
As it stands they're leaving an awful lot of cash on the table.

Whole this posting on BGG seems to be FUD or Black PR work from some kind of paid troll user.  I've noticed increasing sales of all Terrinoth related stuff here in Poland, there are constant demands for PoD expansion's translations(the way we can access H&M pack in Polish, or LTD Packs is to buy English version and translation PoD pack)-there is movement in this matter. That would be not wise to drop the current product line at this point. Descent is from my point of view second best selling and most popular product beside X-wing and Imperial Assault line from FFG offer.

As said on BGG, I don't buy this. I work for ANA as freelance tech editor, I've been involved in something like 120 projects between alpha, beta, FAQ draft and stuff, and I've even got guys working at FFG flying over to my place to have pizza and gamenights (so, we're more friends than just people working together) and every time I ask "hey, is this gameline dead?", I always get the answer "sorry, we can't say". So, while after 4 years in the business there are still things I don't have any idea of, the BGG OP after a few months has news as important as this? I don't buy it. Plus, creating a new account on BGG just to make this post? Again, don't buy it.
Descent and Imperial Assault have been both in production TOGETHER for a few years, and Road to Legend just tripled the sales of the line (according to Chris Petersen's InFlight report, 2016), so, shutting down the line / rebooting it has absolutely no sense for me. Additionally, with the loss of the GW rights on Warhammer-ish stuff, they have no valid fantasy IP but Terrinoth, and honestly Terrinoth without Descent would sell a lot less (the only boardgame lines still active set in this universe are Descent and RuneBound; and the Sadler bros clearly stated on BGG they tried to reskin WHQ in Terrinoth, but the project was abandoned), sinking de facto any chance to see other games set in Terrinoth, or IP books, and stuff like that.
This of course doesn't mean that they will keep expanding the line, but not expanding the line doesn't mean a new edition, or the game going out of print: Arkham Horror: the boardgame clearly showed how a game could be still a bestseller even in absence of constant new content.
Finally, it's worth noticing how this post on BGG was made immediately before a long holiday w-end, so that there's no way anyone from FFG could eventually answer to that illation.
So, long story short, not buying a cent of what's written in that post

Reedmooley got a reaction from Gridash in What sort of expansion do you hope/think they will come up with next?
Well, this game never had enough love from FFG, and when SW stuff came out-it mostly killed all other "non-first line" products expansion plans for example Mansions of Madness, Runebound, even Descent, there are no signs for big expansion boxes coming, only small hero&monster packs and  "space filler" split in half small boxes campaigns , mostly redone from first edition. Star Wars is just what sells. Don't get me wrong-I'm a huge fan of SW, but Descent just got it for me way better than IA, mostly because its not related to any movie and book- I can get almost anyone into playing it, while not everybody likes Starwars stuff.
For other hand, Relic in my opinion is much more playable than regular Talisman, has better mechanics, way better "vanilla package" out of box and rules than Talisman, but it lacks promotion and players base-everyone one way or another heard of Talisman, few has about Relic. Small expansion boxes would be awesome to add some content for example themed threat decks(Tau/Necrons/Dark Eldar etc). For myself, I consider Relic almost a complete game out of box, with Nemesis and Halls Of Terra it gets even better.

A Necron Nemesis, along side a Necron themed expansion would be the answer to your "robot" Nemesis.

I know some people hate extra boards, but the idea of an extra board representing a 'Necron Tomb World' along with a green threat deck is something that really appeals to me.

For those who were wondering, the quality of the 5 lieutenants I have unboxed so far (6 more to go) is excellent.  Other than the farrows being ridiculously small compared to the others, there are virtually no mold lines that need attention, no voids that I have noticed, and nice, crisp details.  I don't have any of these as first run minis, but they are leaps and bounds better than my core set minis with which I was rather disappointed.  They seem much more on par with the most recent H&M packs.

P.S. if anyone is willing to sell me some threat/fortune tokens, I'm not sure I have enough...

Yesterday, I had planned for a quiet 4th of July.

Quite frankly, most of my days are quiet these days.

My friends were not about to let that happen.  G-d bless them.

They showed up at my house most unexpectedly at 10 am.  I wasn't even dressed.  They brought food, drink, and were prepared for a day of fun, whether I was ready for it or not.

For the first time in more than two years, I got to play D2e.  For more than 12 hours we played with the app and battled the demons of Terrinoth.

Tomorrow, I turn 75.  This morning, I am thoroughly exhausted, mentally drained, and feeling ill.

It was the best **** birthday gift I have ever received in my life.  I love my friends.
