  1. Okay, to quote myself earlier.

So before we get into an argument that is pointless and circular, as someone who has run events (though not for FFG in the past), I will say this:

    • Without actually witnessing the event itself, it is impossible to make a determination in this kind of circumstance. Context matters a lot, as well as the exact order of events, so all of the arguments on here are theoretical about what maybe kinda coulda woulda shoulda happened but who knows, or, in other words, pointless.
    ...

In short, opinions are like commanders: everyone has one.

Can we stop derailing this? All we have are imperfect alleged accounts (to be clear, this is not an accusation and I like everyone in this thread - it is a statement about the imperfection of the memories of our meat bodies and another strong argument for FFG issuing battle-droids to run tournaments); nobody has an audio recording, nobody took photos, nobody has a video.

Stop. Nobody can convince anyone what happened with 100% (hell, probably not even 50%) confidence here. There's no point.

Agree, there's no point in further discussing details of this. I do like the discussion we've got going about our own experiences though. I too find myself in league night saying "I'm ok with you doing that, but be aware that you can't do it in a tournament". And I'm OK with someone telling me that as well.

  2. From an old Sun Tzu's extract of The Art of War : "The weakest commander in Star Wars Armada is the one that you are not good enough to use efficiently." :P

Precisely. Mon Mothma is awesome for slippery MSU lists but almost useless if you're centering your list around an Independence carrier.

ALTHOUGH...there may be an argument here for Rieeken. He's weak insofar as he won't get you far in a tournament. If you're playing casually or in a league where MOV doesn't matter, he's awesome, but from what I've seen the strategy he encourages won't get you a lot of Tourney points. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, of course.

  3. Honestly?  HTTs.

You're not getting a Reliable ACC to shut the brace down...  So Punish the hell out of them for it...  They either brace and take all the damage on one shield, resembling XI7s superficially...  or they Brace and do something else, in which case, your Ludicrous amount of Damage is still Ludicrous Damage-1...

And it will still give you the Default Crit if you hit the Hull...

Sound great...but I'm not sure if I want to spend 50 bucks just for one card...though on paper your answer does make the most sense

  4. Edit: that's supposed to say APT, not ACM. Sorry for the confusion.

Has anyone crunched the numbers and figured out the average damage output of one over the other? Or, more simply, would you rather give them a face up or to chew through their shields quicker (and give them a face up anyways if you roll enough double blacks)?

  5. We also did the Spontaneous Sunday Stream of 2 Armada Games, that I only popped on the Forums here a few hours before we started...

..  At one point we had 20 Concurrent Viewers (despite the Camera being smacked by a passer-by and losing the feed for 15 minutes during the first game)

Nice, are videos of this still available?

  6. I agree about few to no squads--you can get away with it if you have only small ships but a decent screen should be a necessity if you have a large target. It's not a huge loss if the enemy swarms your corvette--probably the equivalent of losing a token screen, squad-wise, and you've tied them down for a few turns so the rest of your fleet is safe. If you have one or two big targets though it's a different story. Last night I ran 5 small ships with only an a-wing for emergency engagements, and Han and a 2400 to act as bomber support (also available for emergencies). Han was more than worth the points--the last turn he saved a frigate surrounded by 6 squads by jumping in at the start of the turn.

The thing I like most about others fielding 4-5 ships is that I have more targets to destroy... Mwah hahahaha...

  7. +1 for Stasy's post.

I'd like to add that yes, I agree there are many combinations, but few optimal combinations.

What I'd really like from wave 3 (apart from more plastic crack or "Prack" ©) is some creativity with the mechanics to breathe life into existing hulls.

There are tons of clever things that can be done via upgrade cards to provide variety and flexibility without having a glut of "just slightly different" hulls!

Imagine an upgrade card that allowed you to change your anti-squadron to red dice, or one that allowed you to discard an evade token for a brace (raider..) or one that allowed you to permanently add 1 speed at the cost of hull points (Victory?)

There is also room for multi-faction capable ships like the dreadnaught, which could be exciting.

I've been very excited to hear news of wave 3 and check in every day, lets just say I've been doing A LOT OF PAINTING to stave off my Prack cravings

So, I'm interested in how your communities are faring. Did Sullust provide a boost? Are the Store Championships bringing people out? Did the Imperial-class Star Destroyer make people want to jump in, or do you feel that there are reasons that the wellspring of enthusiasm dried up?

I live on the opposite end of town from MH, out in the suburbs. We have a dedicated group of 4 players (including me) who come out to the bimonthly league night at our FLGS. I was the only one from the league who went to the Sullust event there (MH showed up and took first). The interesting thing is that each of the 4 of us got into the game on our own and just decided to show up to the league nights. I was the only one who had been going to the store's X-wing nights; otherwise there wasn't any crossover. I think it was just luck that all of us started showing up. We've had a few other people show up once or twice and a friend of mine has started playing but he lives an hour away so I don't know how often he can come. Long story short, I'm liking my community although I think we got lucky.

I was really on a roll that weekend. I've not been as dominant since then, unfortunately.

I heard you came out to the Portland Game Store and got a game in with Lyraeus last week.

How is the Rainy Day league going these days? Is it still the four of you? I see Rainy Day ordered a Store Championship kit for X-Wing, but will not be doing such an event for Armada. :(

Sadly no Aramada store championship at Rainy Day. I wish there was. I'll be at the Guardian Games one later this month. The league is fun and I've actually been the one showing up the least this past season; I've had a lot going on but tomorrow is the first of the winter season and I'll be able to make it to most of the game nights. Brian (who won the fall season), Jordan, and Frances are all fun to play with and though it can get heated at times we all get along great.

And yup, Lyraeus and I had a skirmish last week. He wiped the floor with me but that's how I learn. All in all I like the community though it's always nice to have more people.

Edit: sorry Jordan, I forgot you were also at Sullust :)

  8. In the Why am I getting so angry about the lack of wave 3 news thread Extropia posted that his Armada-playing community has withered. Back in October he reported that in his 'bit of the UK' he had about 20 players.

In mine, it seems healthier than ever. Tournaments are drawing more people (except when they're on a Friday evening, when we don't even have the stamina to go a third round) and the people are enthusiastic. We also unveiled a web portal to help people join the community of Armada/X-Wing/Imperial Assault players, called Concentrated Firepower, which will hopefully bear some fruits when the FLGSs get some signs posted.

I like that Wave 2 upgrades helped the CR90 finally find a place in my lists, and hopefully Wave 3 will have upgrades that keep older ships competitive too.

That's a cool idea about the Dreadnaught! There could be one model with both reb and Imp cards.

  10. OK, here is my new, revamped MSU list. Limited squads but with no large ships I'm not too worried about it. Han is included because he's awesome and I think he fits in here. Critiques welcome.
