Like, X-Wing could slow to a snail's pace right now and I'd be fine with that as well.  X-Wing has a TON of variety and I love it, but at the same time don't need 12 expansions a year anymore from THAT game.

One of the (many) reasons why I stopped playing X-WING. Too much to choose from to the point where I was getting a headache, not to mention the cost. The last time I was playing at my local league, I was in a match where none of the ships looked like anything from the movies; one of the MtG players came over and asked if this was a new game. We said it was X-wing and he said that he had no way of telling. I realize that they need to keep new ships coming both for profit and the long term health of the game, but for me it felt like it was losing its soul when no one was using X, Y, A, or B wings, or any recognizable Imperial fighters.

  2. I don't think so, I play Rebels exclusively and participated in both a store and regional tournament since the arrival of Wave 2. Each tournament I played two Imp lists and one Rebel (shakes fist at Lyraeus...). My only losses were to the Rebel lists. The fleets I brought to each tournament couldn't have been more different--the store championship was a Mon Mothma MSU list and the regionals list was a Riekken Independence/Yavaris list (inspired by Truthiness' blog). I'm still not sure which list is more fun to play; I love both of them equally. I also love the screams of dying imperial officers, only to be swiftly silenced by the vacuum of space.

Learning to stay more even through wins will help with the losses too.

Definitely true. Tournaments are already mentally exhausting and not staying even can add emotional exhaustion as well.

We have season tickets to the Portland Thorns (the most popular professional women's soccer team on the planet). Each game, 20,000 of us pack the stadium and cheer. We are ecstatic when we score and angry when the other team scores. We are happy in the end when we win, frustrated when we tie, and angry when we lose. Going through the extreme emotions is part of the fun but I'm left feeling drained by the end of it...and soccer games are only 90 minutes long. I would seriously become sick if I allowed myself to get carried away like that during an 8 hour Armada tournament. Not only that, but in the stadium, everyone around me is feeling the same emotions because we're all cheering for the same team. This doesn't hold true at Armada tournaments; if I did that in a tournament I'd worry about how the other players saw me--I might come across as gloating if I was winning, or being a sore loser if I wasn't winning. (To be clear, I didn't think at all that you were gloating when you beat me). Anyways I'm still kicking myself over letting Wedge get needlessly killed at the end of my first game. At the time I figured that those 19 points didn't matter since I would get 10-0 no matter what but only 10 points of MoV kept me out of 3rd place...oh well, live and learn.

  4. Never been a big keyan fan. Just seemed too expensive for his ability. Especially if you have jan to hand out braces

I'm not 100% sold on him but in one of my matches at Regionals today he ended up dying, but still got to deal 3 damage to a Star Destroyer afterwards thanks to Rieeken. His re-roll also came in handy once or twice. If I was running this with any other commander I'd definitely just put in another generic B. I'll keep playing around with it and see.

  5.

So after dominating my Regionals at Vancouver, I lost in round 3 bad and I just can't stop thinking about it.

How or what do you do to get over a loss?

Find encourage in friends, be glad you did not make this list.

Schadenfreude is definitely the best medicine.

  6. Remember that it's just a game, even if it was a high-level event. There are far more important things in life. I was riding high today after my 10-0 first game and then getting pretty bummed when you were kicking my butt in game 2, and then I got the text from my wife that our daughter was in urgent care...and suddenly the tournament didn't seem quite so important. (She's fine by the way). You played really well in that game against me and deserved the 10-0, no doubt about it. Just remember to "fly casual" and play with the spirit of the game in mind. Know that your opponent is there to have fun more than anything else. My last game was against a fairly newer player and I let him correct some simple mistakes that didn't overall impact the outcome. I didn't go easy on him at all (I won 8-2) but not taking things so seriously led to us both having a really good time. I took 4th, my daughter is doing well, and it was a good day!

  7. Between the two, which would you prefer and most importantly why? I've been flying the following list pretty successfully (shamelessly adapted from something I found on Truthiness' blog) but it's been against the same couple of people and not sure how it'll do against a more competitive crowd:

    Faction: Rebel Alliance

    Points: 400/400

    Commander: General Rieekan

    Assault Objective: Advanced Gunnery

    Defense Objective: Fire Lanes

    Navigation Objective: Dangerous Territory

    [ flagship ] MC80 Command Cruiser (106 points)

    - General Rieekan ( 30 points)

    - Independence ( 8 points)

    - Boosted Comms ( 4 points)

    - Advanced Projectors ( 6 points)

    Nebulon-B Escort Frigate (57 points)

    - Yavaris ( 5 points)

    - Turbolaser Reroute Circuits ( 7 points)

    CR90 Corvette A (44 points)

    - Tantive IV ( 3 points)

    - Turbolaser Reroute Circuits ( 7 points)

    1 YT-1300 ( 13 points)

    4 B-Wing Squadrons ( 56 points)

    1 Jan Ors ( 19 points)

    1 Wedge Antilles ( 19 points)

    1 "Dutch" Vander ( 16 points)

    Alternatively, there's this:

    Faction: Rebel Alliance

    Points: 400/400

    Commander: General Rieekan

    Assault Objective: Advanced Gunnery

    Defense Objective: Fire Lanes

    Navigation Objective: Dangerous Territory

    [ flagship ] MC80 Command Cruiser (106 points)

    - General Rieekan ( 30 points)

    - Independence ( 8 points)

    - Adar Tallon ( 10 points)

    - Boosted Comms ( 4 points)

    - Advanced Projectors ( 6 points)

    Nebulon-B Escort Frigate (57 points)

    - Yavaris ( 5 points)

    CR90 Corvette B (39 points)

    - Tantive IV ( 3 points)

    1 YT-1300 ( 13 points)

    1 Keyan Farlander ( 20 points)

    3 B-Wing Squadrons ( 42 points)

    1 Wedge Antilles ( 19 points)

    1 "Dutch" Vander ( 16 points)

    1 Jan Ors ( 19 points)

    Fleet created with Armada Warlords

The first one gives Yavaris and the corvette more of a punch. The second one sacrifices this in favor of Keyan's double black with potential re-rolls plus Adar's ability (which ideally would be used on Keyan), not to mention braces and Riekken for Keyan. I have yet to test the second one to see if it's worth taking away firepower from my ships. What do you guys think?

  8. Half a year ago FFG settled the XI-7 vs AP debate in favor of XI-7s, at which point it seemed like everyone dropped AP and switched to ECM. Now that some time has passed and the XI-7 auto-include fad is passing, are any of you considering using APs again?

  9. Since it's #tbt, I'd like to dig up something from almost a year ago:

I ran into a facinating new combo last night. I couldn't think of any good reason to disallow it, and I'd like you guy to check my work.

Raymus Antilles: "When you reveal a command, you may gain 1 matching command token without spending the command dial."

Tantive IV: "Before you gain a command token, 1 friendly ship at distance 1-5 may gain that token instead."

What my opponent would do was to reveal his command dial, then trigger Raymus to gain the token without spending the dial. He would then shunt that token over to another ship nearby. Having done that, he would then spend the command dial to gain the token, and either keep it, or shunt it off to another ship.

This is a nice setub, but before I start using it, I want to make sure it's legit. Can anyone poke a hole in it?

Have there been any rule changes that don't allow Raymus+T4 to pass two tokens a turn?

  10. Wow, I take a break for a few weeks and this is what I miss. What I want to know is...why rage quit over this? Armada is a fantastic game. Having a less than phenomenal announcement does not diminish the quality of the game. It does not make it less enjoyable. And there's already so much variety that I know I won't get through every combination of ship and upgrade by the time the new release comes out. I just got done listening to the IFF podcast and I must say that I'm really stoked for these flotillas and their upgrades. They may be small but they will be popular, rest assured.

  11. Well done Lyraeus, and congrats on winning the whole thing. I think our game in round two (that was my Mon Mothma list mentioned above) showed how important it is that this type of list go first, especially if both players have the same number of activations. While there's certainly no excuse for the stupid mistakes I made, there were at least two instances where the biggest difference between who's ship got blown up was that you activated first. (Of course, this is where Rieeken would have come in handy but in my other 2 games I lost zero ships to enemy ships, due in large part to Mon Mothma)

  12. Can I sign up as an alternate? My schedule is somewhat limited (has to start after 2100 PST) and I don't want to bring down my team if I'm not able to show up for a round. Of course, this is still a better choice than not having a full team! So if the number of sign-ups isn't a multiple of 3, then feel free to recruit me. I fight for the Rebellion, by the way.
