Borealian got a reaction from Julia in why the dices are all painted with the same color?
I think the design philosophy is that different types of dice have different colours but same type of dice all have the same colour. Firstly, there is less room for confusion if all dice of one type all look the same. Secondly, it makes things easier when designing expansions that might use new types of dice since more colours remain. Thirdly, another good reason is that quality control is much easier since you don't have to make sure that each box contains the correct number of each coloured die. Lastly (that I can think of), it's probably slightly cheaper to have just one colour.

Although I'm one of the No Music! faction during play, I just want to say those are some great choices! If I may be so presumptious, I'd like to recommend Oldfield's Music of the Spheres, Enslaved's Roots of the Mountain (from Riitiir) and Between the Buried and Me's The Great Misdirect.

EDIT: Just listened to Roots of the Mountain again, and it is a bit aggressive to start off with.

You can almost fit all cards and tokens in one of the big boxes actually. I have very unsentimentally discarded boxes (let alone the tiresome inlays) after finding three of the large ones are enough. But then, I have also made cardboard boxes to hold cards that I can fit into the game boxes and these take a lot of extra volume. If you put all the boards, rules and dice in one box, there should be room left for something else, possibly character sheets (in my case location decks in their little deck boxes, as well as homemade stamina/sanity sliders and a little box containing some always-used tokens). The second box contains (almost) the rest of the cards, as well as most of the tokens, ziplocked and ready. I need a third box for expansion locations and some other expansion specific tokens. Without all those cardboard boxes I made, I'm pretty sure I could have slimmed it down to just two boxes though.

I haven't heard about a new game being in production, so being an enthusiast i've gone ahead and made my own expansion from a combination of the second edition, and the ADWD expansion, along with some new twists! I've played it a number of times with my group of friends and its really well balanced between the houses, and incorporates a new map. Its a 9 player expansion with new houses Targaryen, Tully and Arryn, while the Bolton's replace the Starks. It's based on the beginning of season 5 of the TV series and has new house cards, updated wildling deck to accommodate 9 players, an expanded map including the free cities in Essos, a Deck IV with some new interesting twists and a new concept called the Misfit deck which incorporates the characters whose storylines we seem to follow but are considered 'on their own' (Arya, Bran, Lord Varys, Tyrion, Brienne, Bronn, Beric Dondarrion, etc.. )

Played it a few times and had heaps of fun and many intense nights!

    Hi guys.
I just graduated with my bachelors degree, and then got the flu, only to wake up this morning and find out the world is ending.
The funny thing is is that they still want me to pay my student loan.

I think I misunderstood the combat question: I was supposing the OP had already entered combat and done the horror check. Now that I re-read it, I realise it was meant differently.

(I think I got away with it this time, but I really should try the game sometime if I'm going to hang about on this forum. Julia and Tibs might be on to me.)

So, um, yeah. Guess I'm off to play some At the Gates of Horror Madness Horror with my friends. We'll be sure to yell "Cthulhu moose moose" every time we get three monster trophies in a row, and I expect they will end up on my hotel on Arkham Asylum, just like last time.

Turns out I was completely wrong. From the FAQ:

    Q:
When a location card says “a gate and a monster
appear,” which appearance is resolved first?
    A:
The gate appears first, and any investigators at the loca-
tion are drawn through the gate. Then the monster appears.
Monsters that appear as a result of these encounters stay
on the board, count against the monster limit, can go to the
    Outskirts, etc., as normal.

    Q:
When a location card says “a gate and a monster
appear,” is a doom token added to the doom track?
    A:
    Yes

EDIT: And ninja'd too. Not my day.

Your advice made my two previous Game of Thrones evening into a blast. So I'm running a third one.

This time I'm bringing it to a location worthy of kings; The Freehouse in Berkeley. It's warm tudor style is the perfect fit for our game.

If you're in the San Francisco Bay area I hope you'll come by!

From page 18 of the rulebook:

"Ship units may support adjacent combat in a sea area or a land area. Footmen, Knights, or Siege Engine units, however, may never provide support to combat in a sea area."

So, yes, Martell can support with their ships provided the sea areas are adjacent.

Ok, so how does this work? If we publicly yearn for a Mansion of Madness expansion instead, do we get an Arkham Horror one? Actually, it's probably going to be stranger than that isn't it? Here goes:

Boy, I sure could do with an expansion to Hey, that's my Shoggoth fish!

There. I said the words. I'm getting the expansion now.

Oh Julia, it gets worse.  The way the game played out, the blight occured on the 2nd or mabye 3rd turn. Carolyn Fern was devoured turn 4. Enter Patrice. We seal 2 gates, but Patrice gets a lucky Elder Sign from a swapped luggage encounter! However, we are running short of clues and Patrice has plenty, but we need at least one on each investigator to seal even using all of hers because of the blight...

THEN... the Nightmare Pool Rumor popped up. 2 of our investigators were in Other Worlds, and only 2 could get to the rumor to start working on it.  Next turn, one of the other investigators emerges and seals. Hooray! It feels like a turn-around, except for that dang rumor!

Enter the environment mythos that makes you only able to travel around the board via the black arrows!  WHAT!!! We were going to solve the rumor!  Now the final investigator that needs to sacrifice sanity at the nightmare pool in Southside is stuck traveling AROUND the board from the silver twilight lodge! Talk about the WORST mythos to draw while Nightmare Pool was out!
In order to counter act the additional sanity tokens being added by the rumor while the final investigators attempted to round the board, the two who were there had to go insane, take madnesses, and run back to the nightmare pool from the Asylum!  This is how we ended up with so many madnesses.  We simply could not afford the 3 successive mythos draws that would result from the failure of the rumor.

So, to answer your question, we HAD thought of retiring our insane characters, but they actually had some very lovely items and clues (despite being everywhere, clue were becoming more precious and difficult to pick-up). For this reason, we kept them around (and it's a good thing because had we lost those clues, we would not have had a chance to win).
Eventually it was down to the last 2 gate seals, 1 doom, and 6 open gates.  We were having surge after surge because of all the open gates and seals. And we were in position to win twice, but one of the investigators was rendered insane (because she still hadn't recovered from the Nightmare pool incident), and the other was forced from his explored gate into the streets!

Finally the last gate opened, he woke up. It was madness.

EDIT: We had the addtional option of winning via gates closed as one of our investigators started with the Walk the Ley Lines mission... but we just didn't have enough time and still manage the rumor.
I WAS wondering though Julia (if you or anyone else knows), when you complete the Walking the Ley Lines mission, do you take the gates that close as trophies?  It seems powerful and an alternative way to win, but if you don't receive the gates it seems very unlikely you will ever have (in a 4-player game) 4 gate trophies + one investigator to close 4 gates and use those additional trophies for the mission requirements.
Also, I have a joke for you! How many tickles does it take to make Cthulhu laugh?

Seriously though... *sidesteppes guardhound of Tindalos* ... what's the deal with Deep Ones when they venture outside of Innsmouth? They go shopping in Arkham and store owners go "she tried every single dress and now they are all covered in slime"! I don't mean to be rude but don't they know they should try the non-euclidian department? Then again, the poor shop owner there was probably afraid to remind his customer that they don't stock size Cyclopean! I told my mother once, and she nearly made a human sacrifice out of me! *Drummer hits a few, ending with the crash*

*Pats doggie of Tindalos on head* And what's the thing about speaking through your gills? None of what you say is going to make any sense! It's all Plg'lugn hwahghi shoggoth'hu gnu'ingldyah, hfir'ln plg'luinh ph'thahnl. Of course, not being so good at other languages myself, I once tried to explain that I couldn't understand what the gentleman was saying. Of course, he didn't really understand me either so there I was, saying the same thing again, only slightly louder and with a ludicrous accent to really make the message come home: "Me no speak-o Dagon!" *Drummer reprise*

Of course, I feel a bit bad about the whole thing. Pure ignorance on my part! It's not like I was trying to make him lose his temper, but if I had, boy did he take the bait hook, line and sinker! *Quick roll, pause, crash!*

Turns out the gentleman sliming me was a businessman. He mistook me for his future trading partner (we all look the same to them!) and had just been asking me about my net worth! *Strained drum-tish!*

Afterwards, the dry-cleaner told me "Boy you smell of fish!" so I says "Then you should see the other guy!" *Exasperated drummer wants to go home*

I got one more for you folks! It's multilayered so go home and sleep on it: you'll wake up giggling, promise! This guy in the museum comes up to me and asks "So, the Necronomicon, whaddaya think about it?" so I says "Deepends." *drummer chews through his stick* Get it? Get it? Got it? No? OhItried.
