I haven't read this post, but I should be there also. For Full disclosure my list is: 10 x Academy pilots 2 of the lowest F/O ties or maybe an ace with the 30 points I have left. This will be my first time playing epic, and one of the first time I played with people outside of friends and family.

Has anyone else seen how they changed the deploy ship rule. If you now have a ship that has been destroyed that has the pup you deploy the pup with one face down damage card

(Bossk) + 2Y Break down my list Advantages / Disadvantages
ctsparky replied to ctsparky's topic in X-Wing Squad Lists
There are a couple problems that I see in regards to autoblaster . First is the range 1 restriction. I don't want anyone to get into range one of Bossk. or range one of the Y wings. I lose advantage there since I have low agility ships, and would much rather volley shots at longer ranges. Second is the fact that the defender cancels critical hits first. With the Bossk pilot ability you want them to cancel regular hits first. Bossk triggers once all attack and defense actions are done since you have to determine whether there was a hit in the first place. If the defender cancelled the crits then Bossk can't do anything. Third is the cost. It just costs more and I'm trying to keep Bossk down in points. Merc copilot works if you aren't using a mangler cannon, but when the Cannon does the work of turning one hit into a crit, then that helps you. Also the cannon ignores the range benefit since it is a secondary weapon. The Calculation card is a stop gap for when in range one or shooting using a primary weapon. -
(Bossk) + 2Y Break down my list Advantages / Disadvantages
ctsparky replied to ctsparky's topic in X-Wing Squad Lists
Thank you. Also thank you. I had Saboteur since I kept bossk close to the ys for protection of them via a sudden burst by bossk to potentially take them out. The ONLY reason I have Calculation is for the range one shot when NOT using Mangler, or outside the primary firing arc. I did use Outlaw Tech when I did my full stop, and I like getting the focus for doing a red move. There isn't much green on the dial so I'm not a big fan of K4 but many people like it, and it is free. Also I do like the Mangler to deny range bonuses for defense dice. That being said how would any of you fly against some of the usual lists in a tournament? -
Hello, I'm a fairly new player to X wing, and would play more often but have other duties that take my time, etc. You know how life is. Wave Seven has attracted my interest and I made up this squad. What I would like from the rest of you is to break it down. Tell me what lists I may struggle with, and if so how if you were me to play against them. Tell me the lists I should crush and how I would go about it. In essence School me on HOW you would fly the list or fly against it. I'll give you my thoughts after the list. Here is the list: Bossk (35) Calculation (1) "Mangler" Cannon (4) Saboteur (2) Outlaw Tech (2) Engine Upgrade (4) Syndicate Thug (18) Twin Laser Turret (6) R4 Agromech (2) Syndicate Thug (18) Twin Laser Turret (6) R4 Agromech (2) Total: 100 Three smallest rocks for obstacles View in Yet Another Squad Builder The main purpose of this list is to beat the twin laser turrets at their own game. 28 hit points of beef. The 2 y wings are to do twin laser turret goodness and to provide as a blocker if needed. Use the focus to get a target lock, then use the target lock if needed or just wait til next turn to have both focus and target lock. now for Bossk. I eschewed Gunner since I think most times I'm just looking to get one damage trough. At range 2-3 I use the Mangler to get the guaranteed crit, and at range one I use calculation on a primary attack of 4 dice. I did not see the need for merc. Co pilot (since the mangler gives me a crit). Saboteur is there once the opponent gets damage onto his hull and s close to me or in range one in the rear of the ship to do something. Outlaw tech is there for when I do the hard stop. Engine upgrade to get the big ship around when needed. or to dodge an arch of get into another range category Setup. I put one y wing at the back of the board towards the middle and the other at range 1 away towards my "curved end" at a slight tilt towards where I'll put Bossk. Bossk I'll put 1.5 large basses from the edge along the curved side Typically I'll put a small rock by one of my edges at around 2.75 from both corners. This gives a lane and if my opponent puts a rock it at least has to be range one from it. My other two rocks are there to break up lanes and force the opponent to funnel into a central area. Round one Back y wing does a 1 straight. Angled y does a one bank away from bossk causing the edge to bump him Bossk straight 1 into a bump. Round two Back y into a 1 bank away from bossk. Angled y Hard 2 away. Bossk one straight. From there I try to take out what has been engaged, and play from there. Typically round 3 Bossk does a hard stop. so please give me feedback. How would I do vs: BBBBZ 4 B with AC Brobots Chirp / Fel TIE Swarm Triple Squint with AT? Corran Dash other significant Archetypes What do you think of the squad? How would you make it better? And of course I'll take any praise.

So I know that measuring with your fingers is illegal. So after watching yet another video where it happens: please call a to and get that guy outta here.. just don't do it. I'm all for flying casual.. until it is a regional or higher.

I kinda like this build: Bossk for the nasty attacks. Use the Y wings and have them float behind bossk. When Bossk gets too far ahead have him do a zero. When someone gets behind him have him 3 hard turn and boost. 28 total hit points... Bossk (35) Calculation (1) "Mangler" Cannon (4) Mercenary Copilot (2) Outlaw Tech (2) Engine Upgrade (4) Syndicate Thug (18) Twin Laser Turret (6) R4 Agromech (2) Syndicate Thug (18) Twin Laser Turret (6) R4 Agromech (2) Total: 100 View in Yet Another Squad Builder

I was under a NDA for a game once and for something else another time. I held my word and didn't mention anything about it. First, because I agreed to not say anything. Secondly, because I can do that. In either situation I tried to avoid what other people were speculating about, and never added anything to the speculation. If I knew other people were under a NDA (I Have). I wouldn't ask anything. If I were illegally brought into confidence of a person under a NDA and he showed me NDA material, I would consider myself under the NDA (I'm that kind of a friend). If someone was shown information from a NON NDA source, they are under no obligation to keep their mouths quiet.

I really like Kath too. MY build though is a bit different. I used lone wolf, recon specialist, engine upgrade and Inertial dampeners. Well actually it was used against me, but this is my reasoning: Kath starts out wanting to stay at a bit of a range when the rest of the squad moves forward, then either k turns or moves past the engagement with a turn and a boost. I use the engine upgrade to get out to range 3 when needed or boost out of arc, or maintain a arc if I've chosen a poor maneuver. I use recon specialist for the focus on defense and allows me to get a focus for all of those attack dice. Lone wolf is used to get an extra evade, and the extra attack dice is nasty. Once you've made a 6 dice attack you don;t want to go back! Inertial dampeners when you just want to stay exactly where you are. It worked very well. I also agree that the HLC is better left off and spent elsewhere. You can't use your HLC in a rear arc.. The same can be said with Opportunist. If you don't have a way to strip the token and you are attacking at PS 7 many things will still have their tokens. K4 is nice. Right now I'm trying to put some filler for kath as well. I want to try the starviper so I've made this. (no results yet to speak of) Black Sun Enforcer with autothrusters and a syndicate thug with btl a4 unhinged and a blaster turret. good luck.

So I'll drop this off here. Simple casual game at my house, untimed with my next door neighbor that I'm teaching him to play. I figured I'd play a squad I've wanted to try out. MY neighbor knows most of the rules but every time he comes over I show him some new cards, models, etc. My List: Eadan Vrill + Gunner + Engine upgrade (41) 2x Dagger Squadron + Fire control System+ E2 + Tactician (2 x 29) Bringing the 3 largest debris fields Versus: Kath Scarlet + Lone Wolf + Recon Specialist + Engine Upgrade + Inertial Dampeners (48) IG-88B Heavy Laser Cannon + Push the limit + Advanced Sensors + Autothrusters+ Inertial Dampeners (52) Small Rock, and 2 debris fields Eadan Squad: Get the opponents in the fields and then close to range 1 with vrill to get the most out of the dice, and use the daggers to give stress. Kath Squad: Use IG-88 to get some great long range damage while kath flys past the opponents and then parks and attacks. What happened: Debris field placement managed around range 3 around the board evenly, with the one small rock in one corner. Eaden set up on the side with the rock on the edge, with the Daggers set to go between the debris in the middle of the board. Kath and IG set up across from Eadan. Round 1: Eadan makes a hard left 1 to start to go parallel to his start area while the Daggers go 2 forward and barrel roll to get into good positions within the debris. Kath and Iggy both go a 2 forward. Round 2: Eadan makes a 3 hard right around the back of the daggers while the daggers do 1 banks to get a good arc. Kath goes forward again, and iggy banks towards the B wings. Further rounds: What winds up happening is that I pin down Iggy in the corner of the board shooting at him with both B wings and Eadan. Iggy does bring 1 b wing to one hull and I take down Iggy. Meanwhile kath winds up hard turning into the fray and with one shot manages to take take 4 shileds from that b wing. Then in subsequent rounds Eadan is shown the rear arc of Kath at range one and loses all of his shields in one fell swoop. It finally came down to Kath with one hull left and a B wing with the crit that lowers attack dice by one, and with one hull left. I tried to keep bumping or to get an arc when she didn't but it just didn't happen. I liked the kath squad and lets see what happens next. Very defensive builds, and although Iggy B didn't do much he can be a terror. Eadan is nice, but with only a native 2 attack it was hard to get lots of dice on the target. and hte B wings go down to a concentrated firepower like Kath with lone wolf. So what do you guys think of the builds? Suggestions? Remember this was a casual untimed game.

It looks like they are pearl dice. Which in my mind are nicer looking. And I have had plenty of dice.

I ran this Kath today: recon specialist lone wolf engine upgrade Inertial dampeners She was a beast once she was shooting out of her rear arc.

I disagree with every single point you've made here. I will explain point by point. 1) X-wing is not a faced paced game in the sense games like Uno. It "feels" like a high speed dog fight. It is faster than most table top war games thanks to the flight system and the dials. At its heart though, this is a game a chess. 2) The only ship that is horribly broken is the poor Advanced. That fix is coming. Every other ship has its place in the game. We all know this, some of us just wish our favorite ship could have a bigger role. 3) It's something to talk about. 4) Fly Casual is alive and well. YOU are a part of this just as much as the guy sitting across from you. Have fun, winning or losing. If the dice are treating your poorly be sure this does not translate to your mood. If the player across from you is enjoying his win a little too much, start enjoying it with him. You'll be amazed at what a "nice bit of piloting" compliment will do to change to mood of the game. We are all stewards of the game. Fly Casual. Stone 37, You make some valid points but please allow me to counterpoint: I disagree with your point of X wing being chess, or rather that it should be considered as much. The box of x wing states that it is a tactical space combat game, and even on the back of the box it states that X wing is a fast paced game of tactical space combat. I do understand the point of you thinking of it as chess, but with chess there became a problem.. over-analysis. To the point that they added in clocks specially made for this purpose . I really do not want to have to implement the use of a clock or timer just to plan moves. The second point (TIE Advanced) I have no argument with you. in fact I think we are speaking very similarly. The third point I also agree. You will see that I don't mind SOME speculation.. but people here can get overboard. The fourth point: I agree that I need to show the mantra of fly casual, and I will. I already do when I'm playing at my house, but I do find that flying casually is seemingly losing steam. At least at my local store.

oh I have my nerd card already. It got the official stamp from E. Gary.
-
yeah that bugs me too. While we're at it, when WILL the new wave arrive? OMG?.... must have new plastic crack!!!!!!
-
unfortunately at the game store that offers x wing there is a strong counter culture and is a bit more of a closed off group than the warm, embracing new players group is. I don't put this as a slight of the subsection that this forum or group those players into "all players" but if I only followed your advice I'd be given a worse outlook rather than a positive one. as an aside it is hard for me to get out.. due to family, etc...

Have they actually said that somewhere? They might be doing it, but their assumptions are bad or different than your own. No, they are obviously going to be very tight-lipped on what their process is. The only hints that they gave were I believe at a GenCon interview last year when Alex said that they stopped using the old formula they had in waves 1-3, for wave 4 and after. They have yet to release a wave with all of the generics being reasonably costed, so by logical deduction they haven't been using an accurate mathematical analysis. I only released MathWing 1.0 to the public in early 2014, so wave 7 is probably the first wave that they could have theoretically used the approach. I doubt they could afford me. Game designer salaries are not known for being a lucrative career path, unless you also happen to be the CEO/company owner. Game designer job qualifications do not historically include the skillsets needed to properly perform such an analysis let alone derive what the analysis should be in the first place. A candidate with those skills would almost certainly command a salary of at least 3x the typical game designer salary and would be priced out of the job, barring a radical philosophical shift from upper level management. I did look into playtesting at the request of several current playtesters. However FFG's NDA is overly broad and could potentially give them permanent and exclusive ownership of any MathWing IP that I have developed or posted, so I had to decline. Also they could be skewing the system so that you don't play generics. that a named pilot has a inherent discount in it.

I'm having trouble multi quoting so I'll paraphrase: Bob (MathJuggler) I understand your analysis (it is great btw, and keep it up on NOVA) but part of the analysis compares the dial, and that is much harder to mathematically evaluate. I agree that getting the models into a sweet spot is good, but not over that. and that is the trick. As far as the opponent stalling, call a judge. If I as a judge saw that one person had put all their dials down and the other person hadn't yet I'd be inclined to hurry the player up. Or even sit at the table. Sithborg: I was unaware of the store championship in 2013. However I still feel that at the competitive level that flying casual should at least be present. The more (Quantity) of relaxed tournaments we have the less that flying casual should be in the competitive environment. Vyrago, et al: A player or group of players may temporarily donate their mats so that the TO has access to playmats, even if they aren't FFG mats. the only thing is that the player donating his mat is not allowed to play on his own mat since he may have figured out reference points.

OT: but, but but, Tricia Helfer in BSG costuming... how can you say no to that? She is even in your head..... To respond: Re: Militant Casual: I think that at a lower level getting players a break is nice. Where do you draw the line? Before this year there weren't any Store Championships so the first official tournament would have been a regionals (AFAIK) so giving them a break then would have been nice. I draw the line at nationals... but having store championships does help do some of the teaching at a lower level.

Good morning, I'm a relatively new player to the X wing game, and since I do love the game and the general balance that FFG has managed to keep I've gotten into the deep end (Mistakes were made) and gotten onto the forums and started listening to podcasts. Heck I've even read the Thrawn trilogy; (which I hope that eventually we see something from those books) But there have been a couple of things that do slightly aggravate me in regards to the players, community, and game in general, so I wanted to make a rant style post to just get it out in the air. Please consider my thoughts as coming from an outsider, and in this vein maybe it will put a different perspective on what I'm hearing, and what is being said. Before I do list my issues I do want to state that as a whole I really like the game and the community, and that there are no "deal breaker" type problems I see. The inevitable stalling for time complaint: I've already addressed this before as my first post to the board https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/129510-intentionally-stalling-a-game-for-time/?p=1393262 but I wanted to clarify this post. You will never get a definite answer to whether a person is stalling, and you need to call over a judge. If you are like me and a slow player via paralysis through analysis (which is why I was chosen to do that job) then I suggest that you start practicing preparing your moves ahead of time, timing yourself, and repetitively playing your squad so that you are faster on your dials. On my games that I play I try to be finished with all of my dials within 3 minutes. But I am also actively changing my dials while my opponent is moving so that I can have the dial ready (I just check it before placing it on the board). This is after all supposed to be a fast paced, reactionary dogfight style game. X ship is broken: While many ships are not the best, and that FFG has tried to implement changes (via titles and modifications, which I think have gone well) I tend to think that many of the ships are fairly well balanced. They create these ships and are often always trying to give new mechanics (to keep the game fresh, ie M:TG). Also ships definitely favor a playstyle, and as the meta changes certain ships will become more or less useful. Not every ship needs to be totally equal. And I see many posts on how the _______ is horrible, or broken. The wild speculation on what Wave X is bringing. This complaint is much more mild, but I do believe that waves are happening too fast, and although I like the timing of new waves just before regionals, that we will run out of ships. I do like some speculation, but if you look at the first page of this board it is nothing but that..... Calm down guys we will get to it eventually. That flying casual seems to be going away. It was refreshing to hear the tales of people helping other players during a regional event. It was nice to see empathy from one player to another. I do understand competition, and I do feel that the letter of the law does need to stand for Worlds, Nationals, but to hear of a qualifier and the relaxed atmosphere tends to have been lessened. This is a shame. This one trait perhaps is what most drew me into the game, and in practice I see less and less of this. And that is about it for me. What grinds your gears? how is my perspective skewed or just plain wrong? I want to hear your thoughts.
-
awesome. I think that these type of games are just what is needed when people get bored or aggravated by the traditional games. to further improve the experience for next time: What would you do differently? What worked well? Was the play area sufficient? Where there too many/ too little asteroids?

OP: I'm a similar position and yet a totally different one. I just got into the game. I'm teaching my adult friends to play the game. I need them to come over since our family just went from H+W to H+W+C.... and said child takes up time. So I started out with a few short objectives. Teach my friends how to play the game with competition in the background (I hope that someday I take a friend or two and take them to a tournament using figures I'm not using) Give them a feel for the Star Wars universe Showcase a ship with an upgrade card or two to show them how ships can become vastly different (I use competitive synergy) Give them a feel for how rebels vs imperials fly Teach one or two elements at the most at each session. lead them to making their own squads How I did it. I first used a 50 point squad using Luke + r2d2 and a prototype pilot + Hull upgrade + refit (A wing) vs Carnor Jax + 2 academy ties. We used tournament setup rules and went into play. I stream star wars music while playing. Second time we used some other 50 point ships with one each on a secondary weapon Third game we used turrets on large ships Fourth game assisted squadron building Fifth game has not occurred due to time. I've also taught two other adults playing a four person (2 teams of two) game where each person was given 2 ships of about 50 points to play. So far so good.
