  1. Just based on all the coments on this thread there is a HUGE interest in YT style Scum ships. I would buy a new YT-2000 or any other transport ship and then get some Scum yt-1300/2400's. That woul dbe awesome. Charge like $35 instead of $30 but you get to turn both Yt into scum ships. Take my money now. I like to run 3 YT lists now. Would be cool if I could run three different ships.

Yeah, that sounds AWESOME.  I want my Otana, dang it.

  2.

    Saucy Jan

    • Jan Ors + Veteran Instincts + Moldy Crow Title + Blaster Turret + Kyle Katarn (crew) + Engine Upgrade. (Can sub Kyle for RecSpec)

Two more names for Fat Soontir: Bloated Baron or Soontir Full.

SOONTIR FULL.  I love it. High five!

  3. I frequently use a Converse shoe box to transport goods and minis for my tabletop RP, that said, when I play Xwing I usually just bring everything with me because I never know beforehand what I feel like flying, and I like to lend components, as well as play with folks who don't have their own stuff.

Yeah, I bring a lot of stuff with me, haha.

I have an organizer for tokens, a small metal briefcase with templates, upgrade cards, etc inside... two deck boxes for pilot cards, and 2 Plano carriers for Rebels/ Imperials. Oh, and there's still room for the 4 large ships I've got, which I've kept in their plastic packages.

But yeah, I like being able to lend out whole squads if someone who has never played before shows up and just wants to see what it's like... so I bring EVERYTHING.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson IS Soontir Fel.

Wow that's pretty uncanny. I don't think Soontir is quite that built, but the face is pretty on.

Man, It's hard to argue with those photos. And I DO love the Rock...

  5. A lot of people have cast Thrawn even though he is not yet in the game. What do you guys think he would fly if he were in the game? Or, would he just be a crew card?

Thrawn crew card: If you can trick your opponent into drawing a picture and letting you see it, your opponent must leave all their maneuver dials face up for the rest of the game.

  6. Any of the TIE models after the Fighter/Advanced. Aside from the Royal Guard (that isn't a very nice shade of red), they're all blueish. Why? The light grey of the first two wasn't great (decent enough, but not very nice), but the blue simply doesn't look right - made even worse when used alongside those earlier ships, as the normally-uniform Imperials now have some strange variety in their ranks. Only positive note is that they were the reason I started repainting my ships (metal/silver with deep black panels), something I've very much enjoyed doing.

From a technical point of view, my M-3As have been the worst: colours aren't great at the best of times, but there are major pools of black wash on various places, instead of the neater paintjobs all other ships have. Ah well, they were going to be repainted anyway...

    From the wiki:

"Industrial Light & Magic's (ILM) Colin Cantwell created the concept model that established the TIE fighter's ball-cockpit and hexagonal panels design for A New Hope. Initially given a blue color scheme, the TIE fighter models for the first Star Wars movie were grey to better film against a bluescreen; TIE fighters in the next two movies shifted back to being a muted blue."

  7. Title

    X-Wing & Y-Wing only

    0 points

    "Droid Ejector"

Whenever you are dealt a Damage card, you may discard an Astromech upgrade to discard that card.

Turns any droid upgrade into a "super shield" that can stop any crit, just like Chewbacca crew. Give it to Y-Wings too, which can't use it with the BTL/A4 title, and put 2 of them in a Yavin Aces pack with new Y-Wing pilots, new Torpedoes, and all the droids and X-Wing pilots that came in the Transport.

Not crazy about the title card specifically, but I do love the idea of getting those X-wing cards without having to buy a transport. That's a really good idea.

  8.

Yep, I am quite sure FFG will come up with a way to make us salivate to use our x-wings again that is totally new and unique.  But until then I like to ponder the possibilities.

I hope your right, its just wrong to have the namesake collect dust.

But I fear there is no money in pushing the old x wing, the new movie is its only hope of getting attention from ffg.

I'd be really glad to have the x-wing made competitive again, I love that thing.

  9. Rebel Ys are kinda wimpy.

And Decimators are kinda bland.  They work.  But they're so uninspiring.  This must be what it looks like to stare at a cubicle all day.  Imagine some giddy Imperial officer with a new promotion:  Welcome, you get a new gray cubicle.

Nah, my cubicle is much more entertaining than the Decimator looks.

I'm also not crazy about the red Interceptor... Just does nothing for me.

  10. Yeah, the issue is that the interceptor and A-wing, being the way they are from the video game perspective, are the ideal knife fighters.  You want to go head-on into the furball, and mix it up, rather than playing at the edges.  That would be the B-wing's game, or the Y-wing's, or the X-wing's.  I get the feeling it's completely the opposite on the tabletop, and I'm just starting to learn it now.  The second two games I almost felt like I knew what I was doing with the interceptors, even though I still lost badly.  I'm hopeful the improvement will continue.

Yeah, when you take away the actual flight stick and 3D environment, suddenly that incredible agility means a bit less in a furball.

It's been really tough trying to adjust to the Interceptor being anything other than the single scariest thing in space. I'm used to X-Wing Alliance, where a single good Interceptor pilot (if i do say so myself) can hold his own against a half-dozen (or more) X-wings.

  11. Are there any named pilots who are ginger?

I'd like there to be... As a redhead myself, I tend to immediately like characters with red hair.

Pash Cracken is described as having red hair... one more reason to get him a pilot card!

  12. I can see where familiarity causes an advantage. "Oh, that planet is exactly range 2 from the edge of this nebula" and crap.

But, I don't really care. I recently bought an ffg mat anyways, and our alternative was cardboard...

I'm currently playing on fabric stretched over cardboard... Might buy an FFG mat soon.

  13.

Though you see in the original movies that they have this pattern, with dialogue enlivening the dead zones in the fight.

Well, Return of the Jedi and Empire Strikes Back do it pretty well. Obi-Wan and Vader on the Death Star, though, look like a pair of arthritic old men... which is appropriate for at least one of them, of course, but isn't exactly inspiring.

Yeah, this is true.  But I think part of the issue with that is the fight is heavily dependent on kendo techniques, and is rooted in Akira Kurosawa's films (of which Lucas was a huge fan).  So, the scene mimics a lot of samurai movies with little movement and a lot of facing off.  I think, though, it came off as looking the way you describe, which is why the fights are markedly more physical in ESB and RotJ.

Agreed. However, Kurosawa (and Sergio Leone, for that matter) made those calm spots before & in the middle of combat just amazing. The tension of warriors just staring, trying to read the opponent... I think it's as good as the fight itself.

Now imagine a scene like that, with all that weight, instead of The Amazing Bouncing Yoda.

As applied to X-wing, knife fighters are ships that can deliver close range fire turn after turn, without needing to bug out and reset to come back for another joust.

B-wings are generally the kings of this since they have all 5 one speed maneuvers, as well as a 2k and barrel roll. As conventional jousters have to fly by, the B-wing can keep the pressure on.

Yeah, and I think this is hugely problematic.  B-wings shouldn't have a turn tighter than a red 2 turn, and most of their white should be 3 turns, considering their huge mass and poor maneuverability in all of the available information we have about them outside of this game.

I know they have huge mass, but I always viewed the "poor maneuverability" as "slow", rather than "flying a brick".

They're more maneuverable than the Y-Wing, canonically. So I'm okay with it being able to steer like crazy in close quarters, but not cover much ground.

Right, but if we're separating turning from movement (which is acceptable in space) they all should be able to turn to face which ever direction they like, more or less instantaneously.  The issue for me is that, in the world of dogfighting, what makes it require any skill at all is the fact that you physically can't turn and bring your guns to bear without executing a turning circle, because you have to keep flying forward or you'll fall out of the sky.  None of that applies to space, but it does apply to the way combat is done in the Star Wars universe.  So, the B-wing is the only one in the game sort of disobeying the established rules of movement.

I chalk it up to swinging the hull around the cockpit while making maneuvers, to tighten the angle of the turn.

  15. The only lightsaber battle from the prequels I value is the fight between Dooku, Obi Wan and Anakin from Episode II. Obi Wan knows Dooku overpowers them so he is stalling him, Dooku is playing with Obi Wan and Anakin.  Even when Anakin finally starts to fight, it feels for a moment that his natural abilities will be enough but arent. It shows that Anakin is too sure of himself but still has to learn stuff (that and the lightning blocking stuff).

It even has the nice bit of the lightsabers in the dark lighting their faces.

Its the only lightsaber fight that shows characters, not choreography.

But the fight is spoiled by not having good characters to begin with and with the Yoda Dooku fight that doesnt serve for anything at all. It doesnt say anything about Dooku or Yoda. It would have been much more awesome if a slow walking Yoda arrived and Dooku was simply afraid of him and run away. Showing that Dooku knows where real power is, and it is not in lightsaber fighting.

A true master of the blade strikes ONCE, he doesnt pinball around like a 4 year old who has had too much sugar. My Yoda is Musashi, not some kid playing Zelda with a wiimote.

  16. Luke in RotJ just going full rage mode on Darth Vader is one of the defining moments of Star Wars for me.  Nothing in the prequels even comes close to touching that.  Plus, I've trained in swordsmanship (Japanese and European) pretty much my whole life.  So, the prequel fights didn't do much for me.  Too much flash, not enough kill.  Now Akira Kurosawa, there was a man who knew how to choreograph a sword duel.

I took years and years of Iaido after seeing Seven Samurai for the first time. :-D
