Alas I feed the troll - Yep - it's terrible they have the most popular license in the world and a huge community that wants to play. What are they supposed to do? Not promote the event and prizes for the people that can make it so your feelings don't get hurt over a game of plastic spaceships that you will win no money for winning at playing? Sounds like more than your nose hurts :\

Well this was fun!  Just a few minor clarifications:

-At no point was I angry.  I was more bewildered at the refusal; it would've taken a fraction of the effort to simply apply the damage card.
-Bullying: It certainly felt from my perspective that any bullying and belligerence originated from the other party.  I can't stress enough that *I* was not the one who initiated the notion of ejection from the event.  The player brought it up as a challenge, and continued to escalate.
-The T.O. informed me that the player's REMOVAL FROM THE STORE (not just tournament) was up to my discretion.  While we were discussing the matter, his opponent walked up and informed me that the player in question had corrected the game state.  Endeavoring to be as fair as I'm capable of, based on that information, I told the organizer NOT TO EJECT HIM.  The misinformation in the original post also does not jibe with the "I'm a paying customer" demands he subsequently initiated with the organizer.
-Anyone who thinks I behaved inappropriately due to a sudden "taste of power", I'd rather have played in the event.  We had a gaggle of store champions and regionals top finishers, and THAT'S where I derive the rush of besting or being bested by the best, not by quibbling over nonsense.  My already great appreciation and respect for organizers and judges has spiked considerably.

XBear: at any point along this journey, I would have been happy to drop it:
-If you had simply milled the necessary damage card, but you escalated.
-Once I had instructed the organizer not to eject you, but you came over to me where I was watching another match in progress just to pointedly call me childish.  I even gave you that one without response, so you could cool down.
-The matter was concluded as far as I was concerned, but you decided to smear me in SoCal X-Wing.
-When that didn't go your way, you took it here.

Everyone else; I truly am a flawed individual.  But I make my apologies when in the wrong, albeit sometimes too slowly.  This though?  I'll take a hard pass.

    Good afternoon sir,
I know who you are, and you know who I am.  However, most of the people on this forum don't know you.  I've enjoyed playing against you in the past, you're pretty good at the game and bring some great competitiveness. While I am sad to see you potentially leave the game, I cannot sit here and let you passive aggressively call out and slander one of the strongest members of the So-Cal community.  Anyone who listens to our Podcast knows that I'M certainly no regional champion, so really that just leaves a couple people hanging out to dry.  In your overall frustration and rage over what happened you're attempting to hurt another person's reputation and that is grade-A loser behavior that doesn't belong in this game.  I was standing right behind you when the incident in question took place.  This is exactly what went down:

At this point the TO went to talk to the store owner for a second opinion.  If I remember correctly you did NOT end up getting thrown out.  Get off your high horse man, your own stubbornness got you into that situation, not the TO.  Anyone who listens to the podcast knows that if my co-host was out of line I would be the first to call him out for it.  He handled it in a professional manor, and you're the one who seems to think he was on some kind of "crazy power trip".  He called me out earlier in the tournament for accidently rolling 4 green dice, even though it was almost certain I would evade the one hit with 3 and a focus (with Autothrusters).  I didn't go "No I won't roll three, it doesn't matter anyway", I just rerolled the 3 dice.  He did that all day like a GOOD JUDGE SHOULD.  You weren't being singled out, and it's your own fault you're in this situation.  I hope you find no sympathy here, because calling out one of the best members of the community has certainly cost you mine.

    Now to this point:

You're suggesting violence is a good option? Maybe you should sell your collection too, because we don't want people throwing punches like children when things don't go their way.  And don't say "Oh it's just a joke I didn't actually mean he should hit him"  You typed it, so you clearly in some way meant it.  I don't want ANY fights breaking out at X-Wing tourneys, the TOs and Judges are under enough pressure as it is without also fearing that some overgrown man-child with throw a hissy fit and try to hit them when they don't get their way.
To your second point.  You're absolutely correct, I'm not a celebrity, none of us are (actually it's pretty evident from our podcast that no one really even knows I exist).  We just have things to say about a game we love and sometimes people agree, other times they don't.  This event has NOTHING to do with podcasting, it has NOTHING to do with notions of "power" or influence.  It was simply one person refusing to follow a rule.  If you like to play without listening to a judge then that's on you.  In MY opinion I think it's kind of sad that you think it's okay to suggest violence and blatant disregard for the rules when dealing with TOs and your opponents.  Happy flying though.
This is my defense,  and I hope i shed some clarity on the situation.

    In summary...

You refused to follow the rules.  You got angry with the TO for trying to enforce the rules.  You blatantly disrespected the TO, and since you got angry, it is easy to assume you raised your voice at the least.  You argued with the TO and pretty much told him you are not going to follow the rules.

The TO was well within their rights to tell you to leave.

The fact that you ended up acting like a spoiled, entitled brat and are now selling your collection?

Good riddance.  Your type is not needed in the community.

YOU are the example of not flying casual.

IMO, tournament rules are quite clear which parts of the rules can the players agree to disregard, and that's only Missed Opportunities and only in casual tournaments. There is no 'can disregard any part of the rules as long as both players are cool with it' clause anywhere.
A TO is there IMO in order to make sure the rules of the tournament are being followed. If the tournament is run by FFG rules, that includes making sure all players follow the official rules as much as possible. Not drawing all cards will cause the game to play differently as soon as the next face up card is drawn, with the potential to affect MOV and/or game outcome and therefore the standing if several other players.
Also, it doesn't sound like the OP was asked to leave for not drawing extra damage cards, but for blatantly refusing to comply with a TOs direct request to follow the official rules of the game. Disrespecting the organizer/judge/referee should have big consequences in any kind of competitive event IMO.

Nobody here has touched down on the ridiculously redundant nature of the damage deck. Just so, so many cards! I feel as though a single card should suffice for both players.

I think playing on a table should be optional and add more clutter to the game than they given reason for existing warrant. I love to play in the elevator or on the seats of my car, i'm sure many of you have stories about how the table improve your experience or how the playmats looks cool with your ships, but have you ever tried to play in a baby sandbox or in airport alley, that give so much deep emotions than your house. For example I also love to play in the locker rooms or using a wooden bench

Playing the game by the rules should be optional, we should all just hold our tiny plastic space ships in the air and zoom them around making engine noises and shouting PEW PEW at each other.

Umm... wait, I do that anyway.

I think Dice are redundant, and add more clutter to the game than their given reason for existing warrants. I think they should be optional. Seriously, who among us can't calculate the average result (round down) and just go with that?
Most of the time they end up in bad positions, beneath ships (looking at you Mr. VCX-100), ajar against asteroids, off the table, and just generally make a mess of the pristine state of the tabletop.
I am sure there are some really good reason to have those dice, but I am also sure that those reasons aren´t good enough.
But that´s me. What does the community think? Will the game fall apart without them, or be better off without them?

Well, given they are making an anthology movie specifically about Han Solo's origin I would say it's going to likely.

Also since they've already said everything Legends is not canon, seems like the question has been answered by the Mouse already.

Exactly what the folks making Star Trek: Axanar said. And we've seen how that ended up working out for the entire Trek fan-film community.
So, not sure a Kickstarter built around funding a change to the status quo of a large, lucrative licensed property is such a great idea right now.

nathankc reacted to Kestin in New to RPG - can PC turn to the dark side?
Blackbird basically hit the nail on the head. The Beginner's Game is not designed for Dark Side play; there are rules for drawing on and even falling to the Dark Side, but they are more complex than the beginner game and it's altered Conflict/Morality rules generally allow. It's doable, but I'd make the argument that, if it's done at all, it's best done by an experienced GM and experienced players who want to take the Kit and its extended PDF adventure for a run to test the FaD system and with that goal in mind - it takes a lot of improvising both in the story and the mechanics.

And, like Blackbird suggested, you'll all really want some RPG experience under your belt before you try, even with the backing of the rules. The Dark Side is really kind of cool, but including it can challenge the GM (as one might expect) and even the players, who will need to draw on their experience both with the system and the idea of playing a character in an RPG to make it work without destroying the game. So... well, play the Kit as intended. It's not the most fun you can have with an RPG, but it's a good time and a solid introduction to the concepts.

Just really make sure the players know ahead of time that you're going to have to compromise some of the freedom that a "full" RPG offers to make a valuable learning experience. Before things pick up, let them know this is something you're doing to get everyone acclimated, and it's written a bit rigid in order to do so; the whole thing works better when players are aware of accept the rails they're put on.

    This is true.

In the preview article of this last set of mats, I was all 'meh' about it, but...having seen it in play, I mean...WOW.  The Endor mat - which I *thought* I'd prefer - ends up being too busy for X-Wing.  I think it'd be a pretty good mat for half of an Armada game, but...not X-Wing.

    Bespin, though...dayum...

    It just *glows* in comparison.

nathankc reacted to Blackbird888 in New to RPG - can PC turn to the dark side?
    This is a complex question.

Technically, yes, it is possible to play a dark side character. The beginner game is less built for this, as it is designed to introduce new players into the system, and is relatively linear, not allowing for much branching off; the full RPG (i.e. purchasing at least the Force and Destiny Core Rulebook) allows for a bit more freedom in regards to designing dark side games, and designing PCs that are inclined towards or already are dark side users.

Especially considering you and your group are completely new to RPGs, I would run the adventure more or less as written, just so everybody can acclimate to the concept. Once everybody has familiarized themselves with the rules, you can try other things. Talk with everybody before the game starts, let them know this, and try to gently curb they players that might be prone to this back on track, for this game only.

Technical details aside, this is something of a thing that most GMs are nervous about, having the party turned against each other. It can often turn players against each other, leading to hurt feelings, and lead to abandoned campaigns and games. Generally, it usually works best if all characters and players remain on the same team. It can be done, but not without caution. That is my thought, though, and others may have differing thoughts.
