If you dont use it now, just for R2, extra dice, asteroids..

You will later when you are thoroughly addicted to the game and start playing all kinds of things like Tie Swarm which requires at least 4-5 Tie Fighters (some early incarnations used 7).
Biggs is still a solid ship in any rebel list.
You can even run a Wedge/Wes Janson if you acquire the pilot cards and bases, which are dirt cheap.

All points that mean nothing to you right now, but if you're still playing in 3 or 4 months you will be glad you kept it.

You might not want them now but you will want the ships and cards later. One of each. One of each. One of each.

I am so confused, first of all WW2 speeds arent fast by our real life standards, secondly in a dogfight going slower is usually better as it makes it easier to get behind your opponent.
Speed is only helpful if you have altitude for Booming and Zooming .. but this is a straight up turn and burn dogfight, you need to get as much decelleration as possible to increase your turning power.
Thirdly declaring an immelman as "unimpressive" because Star Wars fantasy magic makes small ships impervious to Aerodynamics is shortsighted .. you can use that logic to say that ALL dogfighting has nothing to do with the pilot because the ships allow you to do anything. He still timed his loop perfectly to intercept a diving Tie/FO out of nowhere .. THATS not easy.

This is why I find the argument that X-Wing is pay-to-win to be ridiculous. It's like arguing Rebellion is a pay-to-win game because I have to buy the game in order to play and therefore win.

I will do my best to lend cards/models needed to complete the list officially. But failing that, casual games dont matter. If you're there just to have fun or to practice/test for a tournament then your opponent being happy and able to play with everything he needs is more important for an honest game.

In a tournament, proxies are not allowed and should not be allowed .. ever.

If you have a problem with people in your community using proxies in casual games, I would dare say it sounds like you want to try playing in actual tournaments where the legitimacy of your purchases will be more defined.

The flip side is that if you want to build a community that supports tournament play, you will not want to alienate people who can't afford to purchase everything .. and allow them to play proxies in casual games so they get more drawn in. Draw the line at tournaments, forcing them to purchase or at least borrow what they need.

Except for that yes.. but all that means is that they designed around their limitations. They didn't make a pilot that good because they couldn't sufficiently represent it on screen.
We are talking about a completely fictional universe, the only thing we have to represent it is what we are given in the movies. Based on that and that alone .. its pretty undeniable that Poe is represented as a superior pilot. The only problem is how far you can argue your "fluff" to make up the difference. I believe that Poe is as good as if not better than Han and Wedge in piloting ability.

Proxy-ing cards in casual games I have no issue with. I don't see any harm in it whatsoever.
Proxy-ing cards in official tournaments on the other hand? Just no. I view it as a courtesy to all other participants that, when you enter the tournament, you should abide by ALL rules, including the 'no proxies' one. I would however lend any cards I have and don't use to any tournament participant that asks me to.
I never saw anyone Proxy-ing ships. How does that even work? You need the dial to play and with 2 exceptions (Most Wanted and Hound's Tooth) you can't get the dial without the ship.

Edit: I deleted my post because I misread the question. My old post essentiall boiled down to: practice often with many lists to familiarize yourself with the ships you will fly against and to learn tricks you wouldn't otherwise learn by sticking to a single list.
If you want to improve your game WITHOUT actually playing, your best option is to practice flying by yourself. Pick a list, and practice setting up starting formations. Practice multiple set ups, and practice multiple first moves for each set up. Practice without asteroids first, but eventually start practicing with them. Eventually you will learn what kinds of asteroid placements help you, and which hurt you, just by flying your ships around the board. Practice breaking formation and forming up again. Practice flying through rocks while maintaining firing arcs on chosen locations on the board.
Eventually, you will have a much stronger grasp of the playing area and how your squad interacts with it. This is no substitute for playing actual games, but this kind of practice is something that will help you to be more confident and more able to react or provoke a reaction from your opponent.

I don't really care in casual play. For some people $15 may as well be a couple thousand.

I have a much larger problem with people proxy'ing the SHIP MODELS than the cards.  Don't ruin the immersion of the game.   The little plastic ships are why I play the game.  They are pretty.   Don't put some play-doh on a stick and pretend it's a Falcon.

Not everyone has the same resources I do to buy multiple of nearly every expansion when it comes out in order to have every card needed to play every list I might ever want to play in the future. They shouldn't have to buy two new ships because they wanted to try out Mind Link this weekend.

So I can use Comm Relay to combo Juke with Sensor Jammer better.  Better throw on a regen droid while i'm at it.

Should the Defender and Phantom also have access to this new upgrade slot somehow?
What are your thoughts on this tech slot?

I have a large collection of this game. I just picked up a 3rd and 4th Mist Hunter, and I ordered a 3rd and 4th Attack Shuttle off Ebay. I've spent a lot of money on this game.
I do not feel the need to make people suffer with me, proxy all you want.
Is it just me, or is the Wookie avatar that Fuzzywookie uses stupid looking? Like he just has his mouth agape. And the Protocol Droid/C-3PO head on the red background has these eyes that make him look as if he's on some sort of drug.

I was thinking pretty much the same thing about the Defender upgrades.  Vessery with TIE/D looks strong, but aside from that I'm not sure the new titles get them to the level of top-tier competitive.  Certainly fun, though.

If I were to try out some Defender lists, the first ones that come to mind are:

    Colonel Vessery + TIE/D + Ion Cannon + Ruthlessness (41)
    Darth Vader + TIE/x1 + Adv. Targeting Computer + Predator (33)
Omega Leader + Comm Relay + Juke (26)
New and improved Vessery plus two efficient aces that shoot first and already have reasons to leave their Target Locks in place.  Ruthlessness would depend on the meta but could be fun to try out.

    Delta Squadron Pilot + TIE/x7 (28)
    Delta Squadron Pilot + TIE/x7 (28)
    Delta Squadron Pilot + TIE/x7 (28)
Backstabber (16)   This would be to try out that crazy new flying style and see if it works when you have a whole squadron of x7 Defenders together.  I'm not yet convinced, but I wouldn't mind trying it.

Never had a problem with people proxying cards in casual games. I'd rather play against people doing their best with what they like than against what they can afford.
Plus, it's good practice for bigger tourneys where people actually will have those cards and practice using them.
