Oh, no worries, I really appreciate the feedback.  It's public because it both seemed silly and unfair to sit on in private - no one is a drifer.

Right, it's the "being complicit in bag arguments" bit.  Or more accurately, it's like making a car for someone then watching them immediately drive it into the nearest building.  Is it my fault?  Not... really?  They'd have probably walked into it on their own, just maybe with a bit less velocity...

you should see Ford vs Ferrari, it tackles that issue to some extent. Also, it's a great movie.

They actually did give @catachanninja's defintition of an ace a couple months back, when he left the recording room so that he couldn't hear them giving it to The Masses (tm) .
That being said, I don't recall which episode.

I also just wrote a Big Rant© if you care enough to read. It's kinda like an article/blogpost, but I don't give enough of a **** to make a blog.

what actually happened was, Chris said it in reference to something else, and then i noted that it was also the definition of an ace

Did we ever get the definition of an ace? Was it something like “a ship that would rather no shots than trade shots”?

This seems relevant: ships that prefer no shots to trading shots lead to wins at time and low scores, even more so when both lists employ that strategy. When two lists want to trade shots (one is wrong and) games end quicker and more list based than decision based.  One against the other strategy seems like the sweet spot for fun and interesting games, so we need both strategies viable for a fun game.

I gave it a few episodes back

I'm surprised that the community is still as positive about the game as I perceive it. Personally I'm bummed out more than I ever was. The ships you mention and more (hello favorite movie character Whisper) bring us straight back to 1.0

Passive mods and (often because of them) multi mod ships are fun to play, but ultimately bad for the game as I personally would and did like it.

I'm way less engaged than i was in 1.0, but man it sure does Feel like the force is better than a huge chunk of the passive mods we had in 1.0

I've been trying to find the rules insert that comes with the epic stuff to see if the new xwing tool is an optional/essential component (so that we know whether it's legal to use during regular game setup).

Anyone know where it is, or the answer off the top of their head?

I know we talked elsewhere, but did you ever confirm if the nothing beyond range 1 stipulation made it over from 1e?

  6. @Boom Owl thanks for this thread, i threw the list in my box so i wasn't sucking the life out of newer players with chopper jedi. The list is strong, but not oppressively so. It's really fun and your initial write up made a few things click.

@DTDanix I was watching some of your games and I noted that you usually put your obstacles all range 2 from your opponents board edge, this kinda runs contrary to what I've felt is conventional wisdom with this sort of list, would you be willing to share some insight on your turn zero plan, or specifically what your thought process behind the backline obstacles was?

Just on MetaWing without as much attention paid to filtering/pruning, both the Blue X-Wing and B-Wing were around 40-50 lists (Wedge ~360, Braylen ~190, for comparison), and only a few slots apart from each other around rank 80.

    http://meta.listfortress.com/pilots?ranking_start=2019-07-10&ranking_end=2019-11-11&large_tournament_multiplier=true&widespread_use_multiplier=true&use_ranking_data=all&tournament_type=&format_id=&

That's not great, but it's like 75-80% of the way from the bottom.  Not very good.  Not panic mode.  In American letter grades, maybe a C+.  Win percentiles for them aren't obviously terrible.

If there's a C+ ship that folks just aren't super interested in flying, can't we just be fine with letting folks decide not to fly it?

That's just how folks choose stuff.  Most folks don't really look at marginal cost of energy (too much) when picking between Electric and Gas for a kitchen stovetop--they just like how either Gas or Electric behaves.  Folks don't pick transportation modes purely on price--they'll often choose car or bus based on what they find convenient, access to parking, and so forth.  Also, some folks just want to drive the red one.

X-Wing is the same way.  Many folks find "words" more fun than "no words."  It's not purely win rates that'll lead to folks flying high initiative.  I think things should be better balanced, but we'll never get to a place where Wedge and Blue Escorts are equally common, and that's OK.

I think it's super fine that some things exist in that kind of low end not good but not awful range. People have this weird obsession/entitlement where they feel like they should be able to pull any random ship and spam it and do well, or that they shouldn't be punished for having some weird list building restriction. "I should be able to run every pilot on a chassis" "I should be able to run ace with two generics that are identically equipped and win"  I don't think a game can be balanced.

There will always be somethings that come out more or less efficient, if the end game is still fun, it doesn't really matter.

Not "ATC is way better than meta-wing" but "please don't use meta-wing to make arguments like that".  Unfortunately, these ships are played so little we don't have real data to draw any kind of useful conclusions.

My first instinct looking at that chart is that theres one person playing both in the same list and we're looking at thier tournament data through 23 games and also someone went 0-3 with the b wing.

Alternatively, scum has some great aces but no logical support at around 50 points like a lamba, u-wing, or slightly more expensive Tavson.  It's hard to make a Fenn+Guri+support or Fenn+oldT+support that makes sense.  In wave 1 it was Palob and honestly it might still be but it kills most of your bid to run him.

Why doesn't the escape craft count?

I too hate it when my opponent's ships are shooting me with modified dice.

shooting me constantly with modded dice, sometimes you're just trading shots with your opponent while you get to a meaningful position. It's frustrating when your opponent gets to shoot you constantly with no consequence and you don't even get to shoot back. It feels much less bad when your opponent has to choose between shooting you and mods, which is why i'm not terribly upset by the fake turrets.

  11. A little late, but i heard an interesting quote from one of the ubisoft devs assigned to rainbow six siege "we care more about player frustration than having a perfectly balanced game, we are trying more to manage frustration rather than win deltas."   The quote came from the hot breach podcast, but the whole interview is on youtube as well. The quote is from about 69:30.  I think it's pretty relevant to our x wing conversations, because people don't always realize that that the two concepts aren't married.

I've been flying a bit of Kylo, Tavson and Midnight. Currently Kylo has Sense + AO, Tavson has Phasma and Midnight only has CS. Was running Midnight with CS & Afterburners (no AO on Kylo) and that did help but I'm finding that Midnight still wasn't doing too much.

He ends up being an annoyance who can occasionally put through plink damage, Kylo and Tavson were the ones really putting in work.

I'm not sure how much you're getting from sense kylo and light midnight. Midnight absolutely needs some action helping
