Most of the three x wing builds i see i am not a fan of. I run Wedge a ton as he is my favorite Star Wars character, but loading ships with upgrades doesn't make sense to me. I am looking at 2 named x wings once stay on target hits though, give them other ships with wingman to take advantage of their high ps and let them stay on target nearly every turn seems potent.

That would kinda suck. Then it would just be one more thing Rebels get that Imperials don't.I remember those Gamecube Rogue Squadron games where Y-Wings could carry proton bombs. Maybe in a future update the Y-wing will get to carry bombs and a crew slot. I think that would be a cool upgrade.
It really does make sense that the Y-wing will get both crew and bombs upgrade slots in the next Rebel Aces Release (see below reference).

As for giving the Rebels things that us Imperials do not have, that is a part of the game that adds welcomed balance.
As someone who has played a ton of Rogue Squadron I was pretty upset that Y wings don't have bombs, but when I looked at what rebels have that imperials don't I mellowed on it. I definitely would like to see more y wing love.

Every one else has already said it but beautiful on the defenders. The phantom is solid but the defender is above and beyond!

If marksmanship ever becomes a 'thing' again I'd be weary of sensor jammers. Guaranteed crit is no bueno. This super falcon has me super bummed. I've been wrecked by super chewy with predator. As strictly a rebel player I haven't been able to figure out a counter. Perhaps it is a z swarm. But without howl its an uphill battle. If your only throwing 2 dice you need them both to stick. The only other option is Etahn. But he's so expensive in comparison to howl. And even then crust don't matter much to chewy.
I find dutch and or b wings go a long way. Dutch gives you a nice force multiplier and the b wings can take a significant pounding

this, despite the length of game the number of dice you roll is not statistically significant. Makes determinations of effectives difficult. The only real problem with X-Wing is how swingy the dice can be. Sometimes you're going to lose no matter how well you play.
I've been told that the old Wings of War game used cards instead of dice. I wonder how much different X-Wing would have been if it had followed suit.

My biggest knock on the defender is all the red turns, not alot of arc dodging you can do in a straight line. I can't find an application I'd rather want a defender in

After every game, whether you got stomped or your opponent barely squeaked by, talk about the game. You'll never learn from your mistakes if you don't recognize them as such, and sometimes there are little hidden things that don't seem like mistakes until long after they've been done. Hell, talk to your opponent even if you won. The more information at your disposal, the better you can analyze the current situation and any to come.
Also? Find the one thing that you like, then build a single list around that. Play that one list for a while before you move on. If you switch too much you'll have a harder time learning to play better (at least in my experience).
This. On the rebel side I like Wedge and I like Y wings. It took me several losses to realize that a wings maybe weren't so good. Sticking to something will help. One of the difficulties of this game I feel is that you typically don't roll enough dice to gain sample sizes large enough to insight on performance. Double falcons give me hell too and its one of the things I mentally prepare for when I'm list building.

I've been wanting to do something like this but I cannot find a way to deal with super maneuverable ships. It seems really fun against falcons and other swarms but I feel like echo would walk all over it.

Most of my rebel lists run wedge plus engine upgrades specifically for phantom hunting, I think it gives you a little wider of a range to shoot than barrel roll. I personally have a lot of trouble with the idea of three ship builds though. I haven't nailed down my exact all comers rebel list but it's a combination right now of wedge Dutch z95 and b wing. I might have to steal Jensen with vi though!
I just want to point out that boosting actually makes your firing arc more narrow because you are moving closer to your target, and since firing arcs are cones, they are obviously wider the further away you are. Barrel-roll is better for catching a slippery opponent in your wider (but further away) arc because you can keep back.
Now I'm speaking in a vacuum here, so there will of course be cases where boost is better, but if your opponent is smart and is flying a more manoeuvreable ship (as echo is compared to Wedge), he might be able to foresee your final position even with your boost and still dodge your arc...in theory of course.
yah the barrel roll does seem a little better in theory, I think its just the play style of phantom players in my area but with boost I seem to be able to consistently get phantoms in my arc or get out of their arc with boost.

To be fair, I know nothing of the expanded universe...I've never read the comics or anything, so I make up my own background to suit what I think the name would be:). The Baron Soontir Fel doesn't feel, to me, like a tough dude, but more refined:). And who says echo needs to be a girl?

IIRC, Fel grew up on a farm and was awarded his Barony. So he could be a tough guy or more refined I guess.
Aarron Paul perhaps? (thinking need for speed)

Sorry, meant 2 interceptors in your list. So replace Kath with an interceptor and a TIE fighter. Why not get 2 interceptors?
in place of Kath?
I think id feel a little naked without a tanky model.
-
What do you not like about 3 ship builds for rebels now that tie swarm and z swarm list numbers are not as high as either the Falcon or the Phantom lists?
Having more ships vs the Falcon would be great, but then again, the Falcon list does well against many things.
I should preface that I've only played maybe 20 games. That being said large ships give me headaches so I'm extremely hesitant to do anything that hurts my chances against them.
It's a bit of a personal preference as well, I like a fourth ship for not only the extra firepower but the positioning advantages as well.

Do you get lots of use from the targeting computer on Fel? I used to have one as well, but after a tourney and using it once when I was pretty much garunteed a win, it didn't feel worth its points.
I've used it several times, particularly against the falcon I played. I also have had several spots where soontirs regular move got him a great shot or where he's jousted against a lower PS interceptor and used target lock to make sure the other ship can't fire back.

Kath's ability will rarely get used, and even if it does taking a Stress is still better than taking a Crit. You may try dumping the Merc Pilot and changing Kath to Boba Fett. The ability to freely change your banking direction (with PS 8) could be huge in either setting up an attack or avoiding one should your opponent make an unexpected move.
The same with Soontir. Everyone loves him (high PS) but his ability is limited to those times he takes a Stress. For 2 points less you can take Turr and get the ability to boost/roll after shooting. Add VI and your PS is now up their. This gives you the ability to set yourself on another ships edge, shoot first, then roll out of his firing arc or roll to place an asteroid between you and him.
And now you have 2-3 points left over (letting Fett keep VI or not) that you can use for initiative or add Swarm Tactics to give your Academy a chance to shoot before getting toasted early.
I was thinking when I built this list that turr might be better than soontir, but soontir has been absolutely fantastic so far. Thanks in part to targeting computer I can almost always take two actions to boos his efficiency. This proved particularly nice when I had to play a falcon.
I do however love the boba+swarm tactics idea and I think I'm going to make that change my next game.
-
I'm also considering dropping her all the way down to doomshuttle (omnicron and Vader) and using the spare points for an extra named tie, but I'm not sure how id feel about the lost pilot skill and shooting so much later.
-
So most of my games so far have been with rebels, I've played four games of imperial so far with this list and its 4-0.
soontir fel 27
push the limit 3
targeting computer 2
academy tie 12
night beast 15
Kath scarlet 38
vet instincts 1
mercenary co pilot 2
the big question so far is about kath. She's in there for a high PS tank and 3 attack and she's been great for that. So far her abilities have been totally null and I'm wondering if the points aren't better spent elsewhere. Any feedback would be appreciate.
-
I would probably just got nera vet instincts and flechette torpedoes. Elegant and potent
-
When list building I try to ask myself three questions. 1 How am I going to deal with swarms, 2 How am I going to deal with big ships, 3 how am I going to deal with highly maneuverable ships. It's a little less fun cuz I like thematic at times too, but I don't like to be hosed either.
-
I'm going to preface this with I generally don't like to pour points into a single model, but I've been mostly pleased with Kath+Vet Instincts +Merc co pilot.
-
See I always interpreted C3PO as straight up shouting "We're doomed" which I loved.

Neat find but I'm not holding my breath too much.

Balancing the decimator

thematically that's hilarious to me. You're an imperial officer and you're all excited to get promoted to your own vt 49 and its your first day and Vader walks on your ship.
