I'm not sure if i'm following correctly. The ghost should never move on its own as it has a yellow border and will "never" move. also, if you got stuck in the asylum you should have enough sanity to just eat the horror check. you only have to make one horror check per combat with a monster, it isn't like fighting it where you have to win/run/lose, you do it once and then engage in combat.

When first I played king in yellow I went with touring "yolo" am i right? won with 12 on the hastur track, next card was another act begins card and we were already on part two of the play. it was a close one!

I just have a thing for Quachil, One of my all time favorites, he is predictable, but you are almost certain of a devouring and I love a good devouring.
-
please tell me how you defeated hastur with the terror level at 10. that sounds **** near impossible to me.

do not buy any small box expansions for more than 25$ (not including shipping) or big box for more than 50$(not including shipping). If it isn't listed anywhere for less than those amounts, check out this page and sort by reprints and board games. Arkham sets are usually being reprinted about every 6 months or less.

I have taught this game way to many times to new people as I absolutely love it. If you make it seem complicated they are going to believe that it is complicated. make it simple. Are there lots of small rules? Hell yes there are but those are often hedge cases that most people don't need to know except in a few situations.
Make it very clear that pretty much all numbers represent the NUMBER OF DICE rolled. Break the game down into the 5 separate phases. Explain the character sheet. Briefly go over items. Explain how to win the game (close gates). Go over monster combat.
Let people know that even just having an encounter helps out the team because they can get items/clues/money from them (and it adds to the story, which I really enjoy [oh just washing my face in the unnamable.... aaaaaaaannnnnd it's blood])

A monster will not move unless the movement pattern of that monster comes up. Let me give you an example.
Scenario 1:You have a fire vampire in the sky (star dimensional symbol). Darrell simmons is the only investigator on the board and he is currently sitting on the Curiosity Shop. The Star movement pattern comes up during the mythos. The fire vampire doesn't descend upon Darrell because it can't see any investigators in the streets.
Scenario 2: You have a fire vampire in the sky (star dimensional symbol). Darrell simmons is the only investigator on the board and he is currently in the Uptown Streets. The star movement pattern comes up during the mythos. The fire vampire descends upon Darrell because he can see him in the streets.
Scenario 3: You have a fire vampire in the sky (star dimensional symbol). Darrell simmons is the only investigator on the board and he is currently in Uptown Streets. The star movement pattern DOES NOT come up during the mythos. The fire vampire does not descend upon Darrell because his movement pattern didn't come up (sorry fire vampy, no luck this time).
Hope that clears things up!

Well for my copy of arkham it says a combat check. It actually says combat in both the app that I have and the actual physical card.
-
The majority of my games have been 3-4 investigators played solely by me. If you want a bigger challenge, go 5 people as that then decreases the number of gates that can be open and increases the number of monsters.

Very nice Julia. Sadly my arkham has slowed down between work and school
. A game I have picked up recently is smash up, as it takes about 30 minutes to play and super easy to teach, its a nice filler when I have someone to play with but they don't want to do the arkham quest. Best of luck in 2015!Julia and The Professor reacted to this -
mmm, thanks for the clarification julia. They still got enough successes though by the skin of their teeth!

MMkay, yes, we were fairly stacked weapons wise. Had plenty of money, the elephant gun, a couple of shrivelings on our PS passed on dexter drake, all the enchanted blades out, some carbine rifles, shotguns, half of us were blessed from the mythos card that lets you get blessed on a -1 luck check. Also if you count us as only have 7 players (which is how i believe it should be counted) we would only need 7*11*2 154 successes (but just for fun, I didn't clue y players in on that so they believed that they did need 198 successes). Now here comes the horrifying part. During the epic final battle cards, he got the regenerating card which got him an extra doomie, and the card where you roll a dice, subtract 1 and add that number of doomies... I rolled a six said "**** no" rerolled it, got a six again and well, fate decreed and so it was. we finished him off even with those doomies, we had decent fighters and lots of magic weapons as all the extra doomies came in his second form). Went down to the last person on his last hand. looked at the last card of the epic battle deck... the end of everything. it was kind of epic.

Just did a 9 player game against Zhar. All expensions in. Luckily almost everyone had played arkham before so generally knew what they were doing. Was a hectic game but we ended up winning in final combat. It was rough though, 7/9 dead by the end of it.

I'm going to be honest here, I haven't gotten the sleeves and my cards are still in amazing condition due to the durability of the cards themselves, and this is over a good 75 games! That being said, I do not bridge shuffle my cards and I live in a super dry environment.

was having a great game of arkham, three players with two Investigators each, innsmouth board, and my arch-nemesis Yog-Sothoth as the AO. Had three deaths in the first 6 turns from being LiTaS. We did manage to pull an excellent combo though. Three rounds into the game we had a gate spawn on the EOoD, a gate at the witch house spawn from encounter, and two monster surges from the EOoD. Luke had to come out of a gate and we didn't want anyone to be stranded to the loving embrace of Yogi. He comes out of the gate (-3 gate, no way he can close it) and drinks his starting item. The milk of shub niggurath (his milkshake brought all the boys to the yard). first time i have ever used that item but it came in handy. stack of like 16 monsters set up for our twinked out micheal mcglen. He had a gladius of carcosa and the item that gives +2 to horror checks. He goes in and takes them all (for louie of course) and we get down to the business of sealing gates. things for the most part went smoothly as we gathered our clue tokens and closed gates, there weren't many surprises to be had, we ended with a butt load of weapons, 6 seals on the board, and Micheal the hero of the town. But as I dropped a player back off at their place I realized something... I had forgotten the rule that if a gate bounces off an elder sign it adds one to the DoR track. We had atleast 6 gates bounce, if not more... I'm so ashamed.
Starting lineup: Jenny, Micheal, Jim, Hank, Norman, Luke
final lineup: Carolyn, Micheal, jim, hank, Agnes, Luke (finn replaced jenny, but was devoured shortly afterwards to be replaced with carolyn)
No Herald.

yea, you should try facing Azathoth in the final battle, he can be a really hard customer in that regard!

I know that poeple rag on it all the time, but i think CotDP is actually a really good small box, especially as first one because the it becomes a lot less diluted, and CotDP gets me going on it's egypt theme. If that is not your style, no biggie. The first one I got was the lurker at the threshold. I liked it because it changed the gates up and brought in my favorite herald to date.

Ugh, ghatanathoa decided to destroy my team. we had 4 investigators die in 6 turns, granted one was tommy so it wasn't all bad, but just ugh. Don't get me wrong, I love when investigators die, it makes me happy. We stilled managed to win because we got some good weapon draws and an elder sign, so not all was lost.
Overall fun game. Love the ones where lots of people die.

If you want some other conformation on the second question, look at the black goat of the woods herald. one of it's abilities is that doom tokens are added during monster surges. the only reason it says that is because it doesn't happen normally.

If people don't read the encounter cards in their most mysterious/dramatic voices, I make some of their items start to get stolen by gypsies, or cho-chos (that is how they get their common items when you kill them!) Adding in the relationship cards allows for a little better roleplaying as well, you now have a relationship with someone! Sadly, I have read every encounter card for every location (including other worlds) several times over. I like to know what CAN happen at locations. Still hasn't made it any less fun to draw and read them though.
My name is Joey btw, since everyone seems like sharing "today". Out of curiosity, what is the time zone this forum is on, because it isn't even close to mine. If I had to take a guess it is most certainly Europe.
