probably my 9 person game of arkham against zhar in final combat. We used the epic battle cards and we ended up needing like 249ish successes we got to 247. It was very sad. I may or may not have kept moving "end of everything" further back. But we lost anyway. Another was was a game where there were 11 out of twelve doom tokens and we only had 2 seals on the board and we ended winning by some miracle . the same gate spawned several times and we got some lucky mythos.

two of the harder expansions? innsmouth +black goat of the woods. They are all fun though!

so for cthugha's final combat, if you were to use say the .18 derringer of the deputy's pistol, both of which can't be lost or stolen, does cthugha still burn them to a crisp or no?

Yog-Sothoth is my most hated enemy of all time. He has kicked my butt more than any other AO. Granted I always only play with lurker gates but still. if you pair him with thelurker herald as well, closing gates becomes so hard assuming you don't abuse the pacts. One deadly AO herald combo is the Yibb-Tstll with Tzulscha. good luck finding those cultists bent on killing your hard earned elder signs... unless you are wendy adams, she is good at hide and seek. I also find Cthuga a massive pain. I like being mobile and his ability is just the pits. The hardest one to beat in final combat though is, suprisingly, Azathoth. I don't know why, but I just can't seem to beat him whenever I play against him and he awakens... I just can't tell what i'm doing wrong

If you are going for theme, it sounds like you would just be using that set of mythos from that given expansion, and then just use whatever boards you are using. Having just one small expansion mythos to go with your board expansion mythos doesn't make dilution TOO noticeable. if you find a board to be sleepy, remove the mythos cards that spawn gates in arkham.

I.... actually really like that idea Julia. My friends hate the 11 ally limit because on the off chance that you can get an ally, they often aren't there. That rule is nice as then you can't abuse Ma's, but allies are still available.

I think you would like call the azure flame. magical shotgun that can be used in multiple combats (KiY). Also, storm of spirits is one of the best spells for single combat for anyone with lore 5 or more. -

My friends and I do a certain house rule for missions and task where if ever one is drawn, whether it be starting items or later, the mission/task is placed at the starting location as if that location is advertising a job and a new item is drawn to replace it. Also, my group has had a loss from joining the winning team, and for the greater good. You will rarely get a clear opportunity for such a win, but when it does come around it is quite glorious. -
I just played cthuga yesterday (as a series where i'm playing all the ancient ones that I haven't beaten) and lost to him, though i blame the fact that the BGoTW was the herald... dude is hard.

If you want to house rule it (like I have) you only get cursed on a 1 or 2 when picking up an exhibit item. Not much better, but still makes it so that you don't feel like you are about to shoot yourself in the foot by taking a cool item. -

Starting items: Lola: World Ain't big enough for us, .18 der, brazier of souls, wither, makeup kit, Clairvoyant Daisy: skullcrackers, livre d'ivon,yithian rifle, wrack, lanturn, speed Montery: the best of friends, bullwhip, .38 rev, golden truppet, golden sword, ancient language Mark harrigan: students of the arcane, flamethower, molotov, gladius of carcosa, marksmen Mythos 0: Gate + proto shog on unvisited "city gripped by blackouts". Lola 2 clues at science, lost 1 san couldn't contact alien. Mark to woods, sheldon gang his *****. Monty unamable for clue. daisy to asylem (to pick up newspaper assignment), lost 1 san to the inmates.. Mythos 1: gate at the woods +rat thing "south side strangler" (voices don't beckon) Star spawn and Cho-Cho on southside. Mark stands up (dice hate me, spend clue to not get devoured). Montery to south side (one loss to cho-cho so he beat the food out of it, autofail starspawn horror and stabs it through the face) daisy to B cave +1 clue(doesn't inhale death gas). Lola to Pshog (fail horror, made it taste the rainbow… of souls). Mythos 2: gate at unamable +witch "missing people return!" (barriers don't break) Monty to HisSoc +2 clue (finds a cultist trying to steal old people's money {he ded, like, so ded}. Daisy to witch +1 clue (internet furry runs off with "wrack"). Lola to Ind^2 +1 clue now at 5 (grabs yellow sign leaf +1 clue). mark to 2nd zone (grabs a rope back to arkham). Mythos 3: gate + sexy goat on witch house "fourth of july parade!" (no unsettling trend) daisy stands. Lola goes to unamable (kills the witch taste the rainbow… of souls). Mark stays and takes Bpact and gets 2 power {draw Rek, not so easy to break} fails to close -3 gate. Monty moves to uptown (kills rat by feeding it food, it killed his father after all). Daisy to 2nd (showed the way back by ghouls, how nice) Mythos 4: Monster surge at Witch, Ghoul@uname, cult@unvis, Skel@witch&woods "noden's favor" (mark surrendered his soul). Lola kills ghoul. Mark fights skel (autolose Horror, Shanks it) seals with 3. Monty goes to curio (buys enchanted dagger +1clue). Daisy stays (fails both horror, rifles the goat and miraculously punches the skel) seals with 3. Mythos 5: gate + shog on Ind^2 "blood magic" (he isn't everywhere). Mark goes to river dock to contemplate life and has visions (gains visions). Monty goes to Uname (kills cultist goes to cilantro) Can't find a **** book. Daisy goes to newpaper (jeffries like her +1 retainer). Daisy goes into Unvis (can trade clues, give 1 of six to daisy). Mythos 6: Gate + PoD at March refinery, "jail break" cultist and COoS at Church green (monty can't refuse taking terrible old man). Monty to 2nd (gets lucky and finds a knife). Daisy passes her NA, goes to asylem and buys her san back. Lola to 2nd (so lucky, weight of eon's more like weight of your mom amiright?) Mark to train station (finds a locker with a motor cycle). Mythos 7: Gate burst + elder thing at which house, "contagion kills life in blasted heath" (No humble servants about). Daisy to BC (silas marsh apears! Autofail will, rifles him down). Lola to arkham (seals gate). Mark to Church greens and sacks 3 stam for power (autofails horror, punches color in the face). Monty back and seals. Mythos 8: Gate burst +cultist at graveyard, "citizens urged to lock doors!" (his partially split attention)-(Merely a runner)-(Devotion with a little reason). Lola to STL +1 clue (chums up with ruby standish +1 ruby standish). Mark to library+1 clue (he isn't good at finding books). Monty to easttown (wins horror, loses first round {o success on 11 dice **** me} wins next round). Mythos 9: gate+ Pshog at Esoteric, "Cash on the Hoof!" (No legacy of madness {oh ****}). Mark Juices one power moves to Hospital (heals to full). Monty to STL, lola gives 5 dollars to him, (monty gets pushed to the street) Daisy reads +1 clue, moves to graveyard and kills cultist (serpent people appear and run away). Lola goes to hibbs +1clue (guy selling stuff 3 success {student newpaper, shotgun, magnum} buys a newpaper. Mythos 10: monster surge at Ind^2 "Early Frost" Color at Eso, Haunter at Marsh, Serpent at Ind^2, Nightguant atGrave, Deep hybrid at Witch, (we won't wither away). Monty to hospital and gives mark 3 money (buys health). Daisy to 2nd (gains a spell +1 feeding the mind). Lola to uname +1 clue -1 stam (through the power of sneak she gains a +1 fetch stick) Mark to library (gains 2 dollars the theif). Mythos 11: monster gate burst at Ind^2 "dunwich villagers drive out undesirables!" deep one to Esoteric, goath thing to marsh, werewolf to ind, serpent to grave, dark young to witch house (Mark's blood boils +7 power -2max stam) Daisy to home (seals gate, 4 seals on). Lola to ind^2 can't find monsters (Creatures switch her san stam, jokes on them they are the same!). Mark to train station +1 clue (gets to move to location, goes to joe sarg's kills pshog no losses). Monty to french (kills elder, loses trumpet). Mythos 12: gate bounce at graveyard DOR +1 "Compass needles point south!" mark and lola switch (mark gave the devil his due) . Lola to factory (slays cultist and priest of dagon no troubles, evades cops). Mark to 2nd (healing light doesn't do jack). Monty to river docks (gains 6 dollars cuzz good with numbers). Daisy to unvis +1 clue, reads +1 clue, (migo appears, fail horror, win combat +1 sword of glory) Mythos 13: monster surge at marsh "Innsmouth sleeps" (power begets power). Mark to Marsh (seals gate). Monty to curio (buys eltdown shards). Daisy to ind^2, horrified by hybrid, kills hybrid, reads Livre to get find gate (no encounter). Lola to church, (kills gug). Mythos 14: Gate +ghost at which house {the other gate was a moving gate} "rivertown residents take back streets!" (no debts come due). Monty to newspaper, (not lucky enough). Daisy used find gate (seals gate). Mark and Lola hang out with bryan burham. Victory by seals. sorry for the shorthand. -

I have actually found that adding boards decreases playtime as you draw fewer mythos cards where nothing happens (more unstable locations.) -
