artteach got a reaction from Sarone in Change in Recommended XP Per Session
I make goals in the adventure and they just get 5 points per goal reached and then they can gain 5 points if they meet a character goal. So one character is trying to find his parents taken by slavers and gains 5 pts when he advances his motivation. Another wants the girl who works on the flight deck to notice him. One guy named Boom gains 5 extra xp every time he makes a triumphant capital damage level explosion as part of a mission. Then XP makes sense. One session you could achieve 2 things and gain 10 points another you could achieve 5 things and gain 25 points. Goal and motivation based xp just makes more sense to me than you showed up this session here is 10 points.

artteach got a reaction from Artoo in Darkstryder Campaign conversion?
I have been hosting a play by post of the DarkStryder game we are currently on Omens, but I have thrown in some extra ideas from fans and some of my own plans. We are over at www.dailydoserpg.com and I have started converting the ship, characters, etc. I'm not a huge "make it an exact conversion" type of GM but I think we have the spirit of the campaign. The actual game forums are at www.dailydoserpg.boards.net.

If you are wearing mom jeans does it reduce the range you can toss the grenade? I saw a very agile President not make the 60ft from mound to home plate a few years ago, but I believe it was the mom jeans.

artteach got a reaction from bradknowles in How complex is the Beginner Box - would it be good to introduce RPGs to kids with?
My children are 18 and 15, but started playing RPGs from around 4 years of age. We would play a simple game with their action figures and some dice, then we moved to basic DnD and on to the normal games.
Age of Rebellion or Edge of Empire basic sets are perfect introductions for 7+ year old children. The number one tip when starting is to let them tell you what they want to do and you figure how they will do it mechanically. This teaches them the fun and joy of Role Playing. Over time they will pick up what you are doing and learn the roll playing.
Remember also that this age level is referred by some educational theorists as the concrete stage. They need the concrete minis, maps, star wars legos, action figures, stuffed ewoks. Whatever works to help them see what is going on.

artteach reacted to Liloki in House Rules
Dude, first off, this thread is about House Rules people are using or considering in their own games. You don't have to agree with everything everyone says here. It isn't an official errata thread that will change your game.
Second, I said that was a change to True Aim that I was considering. Nice of you to fly off on a tirade about how I must be a bad GM to supposedly vindictively just insta-slam my player with this with zero discussion. Making a lot of assumptions just to insult someone b/c you don't agree with their opinion on a rule in a game table that you are not even a part of isn't rational.
If you think the Talent is fine, that is fair and your opinion. From experience and in contrast to other rules in the game, it has become my experience that the Talent is on the OP side. To insist someone is a crap GM b/c their optimiser player is abusing something that is arguably broken is totally off base.
The fact is that True Aim is the one combat Talent that does upgrading that doesn't cost strain. Not only that, it gives you the upgrades for doing a maneuver that already benefits you. You don't make any sort of meaningful sacrifice choice in game to suddenly get free upgrades. Other combat Talents force you to make a Strain choice for the upgrades and in many cases this is in addition to consuming your maneuver for which you get no other benefit. The contrast is rather significant.
The easy benefit of True Aim is so good that my optimiser player even has it written on his character sheet.
Point gun at enemy. True Aim Aim Again Cackle like a madman as enemy is obliterated. Repeat until you stand atop a pile of mangled bodies. Add footage to Demo Reel. Your only point of suggestion is that I am supposedly supposed to go even further than my usual shifting combats to intentionally do stuff geared to prevent him from getting to use his Talents? That is more of a jerk move than what you are assuming I would do by just insta-nerfing the Talent on him without discussion. Your proposal is that GMs should do arbitrary things to block player actions.
Honestly, I'd rather just stick with my plan to have a chat with my player and present the changes I am considering and the reasoning behind it. Just b/c you got burned by a bad GM doesn't mean you should jump on forums assuming GMs you don't even know are bad based on conclusions you've drawn from barely any information at all.
Exactly. It's now at the point where a determined player can grab 4 ranks of True Aim for their character fairly realistically (the two ranks on the Sharpshooter spec aren't even deep at the 10 & 15xp rows).
A truly determined player could even end up with 6 ranks of True Aim with the specs released so far, but that's some serious dedication to chasing a RAW abusable Talent.

I was in the Army and would like you to make a fear check for throwing a grenade. It always scared me to pull that pin and in the back of my mind know this baby could take me out. Fired everything else without a problem, even fired perfect on the m-16 a few times. Grenades though man I hated those.
20 feet is silly for the throw range. It should be based on skill, brawn, and coordination.

Only if I can get a power to devour the life of an entire star system. I want to be Star Wars' Galactus.
Cause pulling Star Destroyers from the sky ala Unleashed is so 2008.

Can we add a Force Level 8 option give them 2,000 xp and call it Unleashed level?
It would satisfy the players looking to pull Star Destroyers out of the sky.
This talk of giving players anything just hurts the evil core of my cold game master heart.

artteach got a reaction from The Northman in Starship combat system doesnt work
I think the problem here is one I have with the game also and it is not the games fault. I like games like EotE, AoR, the Cortex system, and other narrative games for character interaction and most parts of the game session. When the rubber hits the road and it is time for some combat I want something that is not purely narrative in nature. I don't want a totally tactical game, but don't want a totally narrative either. I like to have some concrete tactics to play with. I think it brings more narration and creativity to the game to have more strategy. I am many player like me go crazy about things like maneuverability, the weak nature of capital ships, the vague range bands and facing. That is not a broken game it is just not my style.
I think people need to let others express there ideas and the style they enjoy without a need to prove right or wrong. The starter of this thread was basically saying the narrative nature of AoR space combat is too vague for how he likes to run a game and is looking for options to make it better. Probably calling it broken is cause for those who love the narrative games to jump in to defend, but it doesn't allow for an exchange of ideas if every time someone suggest a change or house rule people jump in and attack. Just reading through many threads on this page you have same dance happening again and again.
Person One suggests something to adjust the game large or small.
The Narrative Defenders jump in and explain why the game works perfectly.
Person One suggest it doesn't work perfect for them.
The narrative Defenders tell them they just suck as a GM.
Person One then either goes away or tells them they suck as a GM.
This is a great game, but it has a very narrow scope and can be modified to fit different gamer styles. The one thing the guys at WoTC are doing with 5e is trying to make a game that can be modified to fit styles. It is not a bad thing to look at ways to modify FFG StarWars to fit different styles.
On Topic: The WEG D6 adventure described the computer targeting systems used by gunners so it is at least a Legend that they use targeting computers.

artteach reacted to whafrog in Speed and Starship Maneuvers
During a my last EotE session I pulled out a d6 to randomly determine who a minion group was going to shoot at. One player looks at it and says, "What kind of strange object is that? And what do those little dots mean?"

nope. it takes a while, but it is so nice when you do
One trick I found was to use a PDF of the talent trees that is available and copy and paste the text into the CharGen. Check the site "Begging for XP"

artteach got a reaction from evileeyore in Should throwing things be athletics?
Had a character use deception once to dead drop a proton torpedo from his X-Wing and get another character to run into it. It was a torpedo attack using deception but it fit the narration so we rolled with it.
I think if the narration works go with it. It is what separates a narrative game from a strict tactical game or a board game.
So I think I will keep with grenades being Ranged (light) or Athletics depending on how you narrate what you are doing and how you doing it.
Oh, Trying to throw something in a precise location is the difference between someone brawny and someone who is a trained athlete. Shooting a three pointer is all about athletics, being able to use your power effectively is the center of athletics.

artteach reacted to Aservan in Should throwing things be athletics?
I'm in the camp that thinks lumping thrown into the Ranged (light) category was an oversimplification. By this logic a 1 Brawn, 4 Agility character is a demon with grenades and that doesn't sit right. Good pitchers and quarterbacks are strong. They also have long limbs, but that's probably too nitty-gritty for an RPG.
Personally, I don't think that accuracy with firearms has much to do with agility at all. It's all about spatial awareness and that's more of a Cunning thing. It's too late to fix it now and there is a lot of gamer inertia behind the idea that accuracy and agility are linked. From a game balance standpoint Agility needs to have the ranged skills, Cunning already has too many good ones.
More classes have access to Athletics and that's a bonus in my book. I don't like the idea that players have to sit and spin when the current challenge isn't in their character's wheelhouse. It's boring and I don't game to be bored. Giving the Archeologist something to do in a fight is a good thing.

artteach got a reaction from Aservan in Should throwing things be athletics?
I think we should have 1 skill called hittin stuff, 1 skill called sneakin stuff, and one called thinkin stuff. We can then eliminate all complexity from the game.
It is not adding complexity. It is they made all of these skills and only half are useful. Giving Athletics or Coordination a little use in combat may be a good thing. Ranged (light) is the god stat for EotE. It would be good to cut it down a little. I know it is impossible, but all skills should be created equal. They should all be endowed by their creator with a chance to be chosen, be useful, and make a player happy you have the skill.
Stepping off soap box now.

artteach got a reaction from Aservan in Should throwing things be athletics?
Some good ideas here. I like the person who stated to put bows, spear, javelins, grenades, all of the more physical weapons in Athletics. It does allow you to have a primitive NPC or PC who is good with a sling but not with a pistol. I know we have the "keep it simple club on board" with EotE it is made to be a keep it simple system, but this is just a little change. You could even use Athletics with agility for throws that need to be precise and brawn for big tosses that just needs to hit a space.
On boot camp, I have been to boot camp and have also a minor in physical education as part of my overall education degree. I would be able to speak from experience on both accounts. Throwing and shooting are whole body activities that uses the feet position, leg push, hip movement, shoulders, and finally the arm. Everything I learned in sports directly connected to tossing that grenade an making it drop right on the old rusted jeeps on the grenade training course. I can see the argument that it is part of the ranged light training but if a player said they wanted to use athletics instead I think I would allow it. I think Tom Brady could probably throw a grenade. Greg Maddox would wipe a booger on it, but then throw it like a madman.
