I wouldn't recommend it, unless you and your friends all agree to start in 1.0. The community as a whole has moved on to 2.0 and you will probably run into trouble finding people to play against.
My personal advice is to play a few games with just the contents of one core set, then decide what kind of fighters interest you. The X-wing will give you a good idea of how the heavier ships fly, while the TIEs will give you a taste of maneuverability. For example: I like the fast dodgy guys, so I tend to reach for TIE Interceptors and Fang Fighters depending on which faction I feel like playing that day, whereas my buddy loves putting a block of generic dudes in a big blob and trying to beat me over the head with them, but he likes tanky things so he runs alot of B-Wings and Y-Wings. I find not having all the things to start out is a feature in this game, it will allow you to save money overall by not picking up the things that end up outside your wheelhouse.

Assume everything from 1.0 except the ships (and dice) themselves is completely useless to you.
The 'epic' ships are not yet converted, that's coming sometime in the nebulous future.
As for faction mixing: At the kitchen table, do what you will. In competitive not so much. There is an official app for squad building, though personally I use Launch Bay Next.

Maarek really wants a coordinating ship nearby. If swarm ace is your flavour, I'd swap mailer for scourge and give him a swarm tac as well so your entire list fires at 5 or better.

Your pure Sabaac looks pretty good, I usually take predator because mod and a half on 4 dice is pretty great. Strategy wise, use that pre maneuvre boost to get to places they can't easily adapt to while your swarm kicks them in the teeth.

TIE/sk Striker - •“Pure Sabacc” - 50 •“Pure Sabacc” - Confident Gambler (44) Shield Upgrade (6) Total: 158/200
Your left with 42 pts, add a ship??? Upgrade ties to named? Up to you but I would just add a 6th ship I love flying 7 ships.
At 40 points left add howl for maximum damage on that swarm

The aces are clutch but the low agility, low PS, and lack of crit mitigation means that they're very susceptible to variance, which, combined with the mandatory Ailerons move means that you have to invest a lot of time and effort into flying them well for...
a 3 dice primary.
I'd rather bring any of the conditional 3 dice LN's (Gideon, Wampa, Mauler, Scourge) for:
1) Less points
2) More agility
3) Higher PS (save for Wampa).I found the rebel player.

Honestly, I would restrict to 68 points. It lets you build an ace without having to remember 16 (hyperbole) upgrades

I mean, it only helps you for the initial engagement and would work regardless of board position (depending on rocks). The board edge just happens to eliminate a variable of which side has to go faster to prepare for the enemy flank. Otherwise, why not leverage your 180 degree arc?

1 hour ago, Vontoothskie said:its almost a ww2 bomber situation, were you might want an escort fighter positioned in your YVs blindspot
fly in an echelon along the board edge. If they go to flank the lead ship turns to cover the rear. If they joust go ahead and reform the line.

I remember back in May, they said that the reason they added subtitles to the unique pilots is so that they can re-release them with different abilities and of course a different subtitle. Upgrade cards don't have this so we are stuck with them other than hyperspace limiting the cards avaliable.
Sorry, I forgot to set sarcasm to (on)

I wish there were a way for Fantasy Flight to course correct after the cards are in our hands... Guess we'll never have a balanced game

I don't think Heroic is a card that is going to win you games, but I think it can prevent them from going downhill due to variance (at least to some extent).
I have had heroic save me from 2- 4 dice shots in 1 game, it was glorious.

Tallie with Heroic, Crack Shot, Advanced Optics and a Proton Rocket is a joy to fly; having the guns threaten your pursuit while lining up 5 dice on a large base is so much fun.
-
Tallie is soooo much fun to play, having the guns facing the back to discourage tailing while lining up a procket on a large base ship is great.

1 hour ago, Vontoothskie said:you're math is kinda wrong. the kits only convert that if you own the right combination of ships AND fly the right lists. even obvious popular lists of 3 to 4 ships require 2 conversions in some cases
Math is each convo kit converts 2 ships a faction with an average of 15 shipsish per. I get that that's not a swarm of most things, but...
Also @Darth Meanie, I feel like this is the core of why people are upset about them. FFG made the convo kits with 100 (200)pts in mind, and people with collections like yours feel left out. That's 100% legit, but to say the convo kit is a bad value is not accurate.

38 minutes ago, Darth Meanie said:Odds are, I will never convert Empire, Rebels, and Scum because those factions will not be cost effective for me to update, and I'm fine playing them as 1.0. At $150 for all 3, those ConKits are a whole 1-2 Waves of Republic I can buy.
lol, convert a total of 90+ships or buy 10. The math here is astounding on what you find a bargain.

4 hours ago, Cloaker said:Oh yes, usually pretty good at recognizing that! That was exactly what I did but I just ran out of space trying to dodge TS Proton bomb spread and range 2-3 torps / barrage rockets. By the time i got 2 free to start to go to work, 2 Skulls were already gone. The punisher having the zero and boost certainly made it a guessing game. Next time my strategy will be to stay at range 1 of all border edges, fan out and try to get them inside of a plus sign setup. But it sure is hard when nearly a fourth of the game state is covered with TS. Ah well. So it goes!
It is a very difficult approach to make and can easily be lost at setup. Good luck in your next engagement with them!

I'm going to bring an analogy from MTG into this that I feel is very apt to the situation. When you play a game like this, you have to quickly figure out who is the control player and who is the aggro player. Every matchup boils down to this dynamic and in your case I think you really wanted to be aggro when you should have been playing control. When you can't joust with the fangs, just pretend you've got interceptors on the table and go from there. Splitting your forces is key here as they can only cover so much approach optimally so one element should be able to get in and do major damage while the other ships run.

It should be unique at least, maybe that unicorn low accuracy/high damage weapon we've always asked for but never gotten.

How to get started?
