I'm worried that the cost relative to the E-Wing, combined with the defensive nature of the Defender compared to the E-Wing makes me feel like the rebels got the winner of the superiority fighters. I think Phantoms are going to be the wild card here, the innate reposition and I assume price reduction that come with the drop in attack dice should make for a great ship.

Its not that the Rebels can't have nice things, its that their nice things are never considered a problem. Palp Aces was a problem, the phantom was a problem. Han wasn't a problem, you just needed to be able to boost and not in his front arc. Biggs wasn't a problem until the end of 1.0. Miranda wasn't a problem, Sabine wasn't a problem. Attanni mindlink was a problem. That's Rebel bias.

Luke also saved Biggs and avoided dark curse long enough for wedge to save him.

The lightsaber combat can be easily explained, even from a real world example. Granted there's a larger time gap but we are just starting to actually figure out what skilled fighting with an arming sword looked like due to the efforts of historians and enthusiasts translating ancient training manuals. Now look at what happened in star wars. The sword fighters all died and their ways were suppressed by the government. Luke got 3 days of basics before he went to fight Vader, who's lost most of the agility that made the sabre an art form pre-fall.

But clearly not Scarifs or they'd have had better troops defending it.
