Seriously, what piece of stationery would be a worse foundation for a starship design?

Great article from a guest writer who promotes Star Wars fandom. I am tired of the negativity on this forum, x-wing can be a great game for all level of players.

Atlanta has first hand evidence of guys stumbling up at regionals, saying "whoa this looks fun what is it" and then being regional competitive before the next year.
So get out of here with all that mess.

    So...

Dustin just won the SC in Lincoln this weekend with a TIE Swarm.  I won here in Omaha without a PWT, using a PS 6, a PS 2, and Poe.  Brobots came in 2nd.  Sith Lords placed well both times.  We had a 3X (T-65 mind you) + Z take 2nd place here in Omaha.  Scum Boba placed well both times, 3-K is a thing, Feedback swarms can do work, and we have folks winning and placing throughout the World with Star Vipers.

Pretty much the only ship not hitting the table successfully is the poor Scyk.  The only Archetype missing is the "random-generated-from-squad-builder" list and I'm not too sure about that.

Things are better than good, they are by far the most varied and balanced they have ever been.  Do you have to account for what you expect to see when constructing your list?  Of course you do.  Are you seriously saying that a game that allows you to completely ignore your opponents choices at ANY point (including squad construction) is somehow MORE competitive than one that requires you to know a little bit about ships you aren't currently flying?

I really don't know what kind of meta it would take to satisfy the doom-sayers if this isn't it.

Handler reacted to VanorDM in Announcing X-Wing System Open!
Some people clearly have no clue what setting up something this large actually takes. They are also apparently under the delusion that FFG owes them something... And that FFG has complete control over when they announce things. This is clearly not aimed at Sithborg in case anyone was wondering...
Having an event in Adepticon makes sense it's a big miniature game focused event. It makes as much sense if not more sense than having something at most other cons.
Then they had to get things set up for other locations in other countries which is always a fun time... And deal with Disney to get room for the event at the Star Wars celebration which only takes a few emails to set up.
So yeah if someone who wants to go can't... That's really their problem, but all those who can and will go, don't deserve to have this event canceled because you can't make it.

Combine it with a drinking game. The more you win, the more you drink. This not only has the effect of levelling the two sides over time, but also makes it more fun. This works for nearly everything in life.

Handler reacted to TheNewShmoo in Interview about new FFG policy. Yes, they're jacking up online prices.
You've got it backwards. It is the online retailers that are being subsidized. They are benefiting from the demand that is generated by FLGSs and the Internet but they aren't doing the heavy lifting of running tournaments, providing free gaming space, or promoting products to people who aren't already in the hobby. FFG is giving them a discount in recognition of the work they do which promotes FFGs products, not because they are a charity. Online retailers don't get that discount because they don't get to take credit for the growth in the industry generated by Facebook, YouTube, et al.

The stinky nerds that hang out in local game stores will still stink when they switch to playing in whatever free gaming space you imagine will spring up to replace all the game stores that have gone out of business.

I seriously don't understand the angst here.
Everybody chill out if you don't have an LGS near you. Online sales will still be there! Just probably no longer at ridiculous discounts.
The MSRP is there for a reason. If you have a membership to Barnes & Noble or an LGS that does discounts, you will get 10% off or so. That's reasonable. If you're only buying from a massive online service and used to getting 30 or 40% off, well, that's going to end and if you're outraged by that, I think the greater ethical burden of greed falls on you, not the corporate "man."
If I'm off base somewhere, I welcome alternative views.
But I just don't see any reason for people to feel offended. This will benefit my two LGSs directly.

Handler got a reaction from Radarman5 in How many skirmish maps can I make from the same tile set?
I don't have a spreadsheet, but I'm pretty sure there are only two maps so far which have no overlap in tiles: they are the Kuat Space Station from the Royal Guard Champion expansion, and the Endor Wilderness map from the Rebel Saboteurs expansion. The first uses pieces from 19 upwards, and the second uses tiles 18 and below. I hope they do more like this though because other options would be nice to have more than two maps prepared for play at the same time.

Handler got a reaction from Rodafowa in Is it me or do the Podcast have a hard time to keep up?
Behind by a week? Sounds like about the time it would take to read about and try out the new stuff, find a time that 3-5 people all have free and can get online together, record, edit, and post a podcast.  Actually that wouldn't take a week - if it was me and my mates the podcast would be at least 2 months behind.

Handler reacted to Forgottenlore in the rulebook is new and there are changes
Editing so everything is in the first post

There is a new version of the rulebook and it does make changes.

As expected these changes are fairly minor and mostly just clean up weird issues without actually changing how things work at all.

There are 3 different books. A Mission book with 3 new missions, A "Learn to Play" book with a simple overview of the game, enough to start playing, and a "Rules Reference" that contains the complete game rules and is essentially an alphabetical glossary of specific rules topics meant to be used when there is a question about how something works.

    Here are the major changes

The activation phase is now different. the "Execute Maneuver" step involves the substeps - move ship, Check Pilot Stress and clean up. This means that anything that "Executes a Maneuver" (Night Beast, SLAM) now includes the check pilot stress element. Night Beast can clear stress before his ability triggers, SLAMing a red maneuver causes stress, etc...

You can now target lock a ship you already have a lock on, the old lock is discarded. A minor change to a couple abilities.

The rules for attacking now say

You choose weapon then you choose target. This fixes the problem with secondary weapons that the old combat order had. There is some argument about how this effects Biggs, but it will certainly be clarified or errata'ed to work the same as ever in the FAQ that will no be posted any day now.

Dice results official have the names everyone uses (Hit, Critical, Blank etc...)

Ion Rules are the same, which means the Conner Net debate was not for nothing

Rules for Debris Clouds are fully integrated, putting an end to the argument that a debris cloud also causes you to skip your action phase (you don't, you just get the stress)

If you hit multiple obstacles in one move you suffer the effects of all of them.

Upgrade types have official names now.

    EPTs are officially "Elite" upgrades
The new type is called "Tech"

The rules for Titles clarifies that the TIE Advanced X1 can be equipped to Vader, but cannot be equipped to the Inquisitor. It also makes it clear what ships the TIE Mark 2 Engine can go on.

There is also nothing in the new rulebook that clarifies the issue about dropping a bomb before SLAMing.

    There are 3 new missions, F1, F2 and F3

F1 is "Ambush" - The x-wing leads the TIEs into a minefield

F2 is "Raid" 36 point game. 1 resistance ship vs 2 FO ships. the resistance must defend some satellite for 8 rounds

F3 is "Rescue" 36 point game, resistance must escort the "squadmate token" off the board. Very similar to the sentorial shuttle mission form the old core

I think that is all of the substantive changes and additions that aren't on cards. The new ships and pilot abilities and the new damage deck are being discussed elsewhere.
