TezzasGames reacted to X Wing Nut in Fixing activation counts, idea #eleventy-Q: alternate by command total rather than ship count
Is a Pass Rule the same as Imperial Assault just to simple?

TezzasGames reacted to AllWingsStandyingBy in the "squadrons or ships" fallacy
Both the Yavaris itself and the B-Wings are pretty darn slow, especially since Yavaris can't have Boosted Comms so the B-Wings can't stray further than medium range from it.
The solution here is to not go at that fleet and just take a 5-5. That'll stop the Yavaris B-Wing Ball player from playing the list pretty quickly if he always gets stuck with a 5-5 and can't crack Top 8 standings. The problem with Armada, though--and it's a problem even at the level of Origins and Gencon based on my observations this past summer--is that some players will fly right into the teeth of their opponent's most ridiculous 5-5 lists. And now, instead of that player getting a 5-5 stalemate because of the nature of their list they've been gifted a free 10-0 win because their opponent was stupid enough to fly right into it.
The trouble, though, when you come against a list like that (and a couple waves ago it was Triple Vic Rhymer Ball or Double Vic Rhymer Ball + Glad) is that by refusing to engage them (where they have a huge advantage) and instead forcing them to settle for a 5-5 is that you also take a 5-5, which can ruin your tournament run as well and is an incredibly boring and unsatisfying way to spend 2.5 hours. But it's always better than the 9-2 / 10-1 you'd give your opponent if you flew right into their trap and let them fight the engagement on their terms with their slow overpowering list.
This is one of the reasons why Aramada, as beautiful and fun of a game as it is, really doesn't hold up well as a rigorous competitive tournament game.

TezzasGames got a reaction from Democratus in Victoria Regionals
I was sixth with:
- Victory II Star Destroyer; Tarkin, Warlord, Intel Officer.
- Victory II Star Destroyer.
- Gladiator I Star Destroyer.
- Dengar.
- 2 TIE Advanced.
- 7 TIE Interceptors.
400 Points.
Most Wanted, Minefields, Hyperspace Assault.
Round 1: I was smashed (9-1) by playing far too timid against 1 ISD, 1 VSD and 7 squadrons. Advanced Gunnery.
Round 2: I did the smashing (9-1) against Home One, MC30c, Corvette and six mixed squadrons. Opening Salvo.
Round 3: I just got there (7-3) against 1 ISD, Insidious, Demolisher, Raider and two TIE-Fighter squadrons. Hyperspace Assault.
I got my Top 8 dice!

I wouldn't complain if I won a Challenge Coin for making the Top Cut! Someone tell me, please... what does a Top Cut feel like?

X-Wing: Simple scoring (now) that perfectly suits a very competitive game. Believe it or not, I don't find X-Wing to be an engaging casual game. A lot of casual 100 point Dogfights can be 'effectively over' in 15 minutes, or less. The only reason that tournament games last longer is because players are trying to gain or preserve their MoV.
Armada: Convoluted, artificial scoring that does not suit a competitive game. Armada is best suited to be a casual game. You can usually play for at least an hour and enjoy the experience, possibly with a beer and pretzels.
Competitive Armada has three main issues:
1 - Game length. There's only so much time in the day to play numerous Swiss rounds.
2 - Artificial (non)engagement, where sometimes players just want to stall in a corner - and can, because of the six game turn limit.
3 - The scoring system. It's terrible. There is something fundamentally wrong when a player with three wins, finishes in second place to someone who lost a round.
I've seen the problems with Armada from the perspective as a player and a TO. It's sad because the game is awesome, but it just doesn't stack up as a top tier competitive game.

isn't that how this game is scored? on points? a player with 2 wins and 1 loss "Technically we won on points"?
I don't know how many people here play X Wing as well. In the last rules change FFG did away with modified wins. in most tournaments if a player received a modified win, a win of less then 12 points, they received a loss for all effective purposes. FFG saw the light and done away with this rule. A win is now a win even if it is only for 1 point. I see long term players who win with a 6 or 7 will see this the same way a X wing players saw mod wins as a loss.
I keep seeing posts against talking about sitting in the corner and taking the 2nd player auto win. This is no guaranteed way to win a tournament as MOV + wins is what you will need. X wing has a similar problem its called Fortressing. It was once a big problem but new ships and upgrades come out players learn to deal with the problem and learn the players/lists who were more likely to do it. Now Fortressing is a minor nuisance. This will be the same for Armada also.
From games I have played and games I have watched the games which produce the low scores of 6 and 7 are often the more fun and memorable games. the whole game every move matters every dice roll matters. when the game goes back and forth where the win come on the last dice roll, move, crit against a player of around the same skill level. to receive a 6 after such an epic battle and knowing that 6 is not going to mean anything in the grand scheme of things take so much away from the game you just played.
I am happy to lose at tournaments to a player who has 3 wins and a higher MOV them me even if that player did get easer matches then I did that does come down to the randomness of the draw. But to lose to a player with 1 loss, a player I may have beaten in the last round does not sit well with me

I've been thinking a lot about the Armada tournament scoring and IMO it is flawed
Player 1 won 2 games against Rieekan Corvette swam scoring 6 and 6 then 1 against (any other list) won scoring 8 total 20
Player 2 played against a new player scoring 10. got the right match up another 10 then lost really bad scoring 1 total 21
who is the real winner? who worked for it? and how would you be if your were player 1
The way to calculate the MOV is ok but with out a win loss as the first tie breaker the players who start with a week opponent will have a unfair advantage. Some will argue that most if not all tournaments will be 3 rounds only and players who lose there first round will have no reason to stick around. This is already the case for most players who loss the firs round anyway but they still stay and play as there other prizes to play for (other then a useless coin ) and the game is enjoyable.
Getting a higher MOV in this game does not represent how well you have played compered to straight win loss.
When I build list and select objectives I am not looking to build a list to score a high MOV against some of the lists out there so when/if I loss a game I still have a chance of winning. I build lists to WIN every game. I don't want to think about MOV I want to think about winning. that is all we should have to think about. MOV should be used as a tie breaker between players on the same win loss level only. Even then I think there could be some changes that could be made to fix that as well but there is no use in thinking about that until we can get win loss as the first tie breaker
No game where a player who loses 1 game can beat a player who has won all of there games can be called competitive.

FFG you need to include these coins into the tournament kits then I will stop complaining about how much the current coins suck

TezzasGames reacted to LordBlades in Stress. How much is too much?
The same can be said about firing arcs (hello turrets), obstacles (hello Dash and soon Seismic Torps), setting dials (hello PtL Boost&Barrel Roll Aces) etc. This game is full of exceptions, ships that break or bend the general rules. Singling Stress out is silly.
IMO people should wait for the meta to settle down a bit before they start running around screaming about Dengaroo. The list is very strong versus many lists that are widely popular right now, but it also has weak matchups (ships with low agility high HP like VCX or Decimator and ships with high number of hits per attack, like Brobots or Scouts).
