I flew an 8 TIE swarm with Chaser and Wampa for Vassal season 1. It did well, but I didn't win my group (Inner Rim). It has been a wave and a half since then, but I still think you will do pretty well, but not win, with an 8 TIE swarm. I recall one game against Carnor, Soontir, Palp, and I flew well, killing Palp early without losing a TIE, then, even with blocking and getting 1-2 range 1 shots against Soontir AND Carnor I couldn't get the kill. Fickle. Green. Dice. The variance is what stops it from being a top tier list.

Now zuckuss on the other hand removes that lucky variance....

    This is all incorrect.

Triple X-7 Defenders beat TIE swarm more often than not.  Sure its quite possible for the TIE fighters to kill one defender early (although that's no certainty).  Whether they do or not, it is pretty close to impossible for TIE fighters to kill the remaining two.  I have proven this numerous times against some really good players flying TIE swarm against my triple X-7 Defender list, and I have yet to lose that particular matchup...

Also, TIE swarm is actually pretty good against Dengaroo, but you have to fly it very carefully.  There's an article explaining how, so I'm not going to cover it in detail, but basically, you split the swarm forcing Manaroo into a corner.  You lose a TIE or two in the process, but once Manaroo is trapped, you kill her and then your remaining TIEs have a good fighting chance against Dengar.  Not saying its an easy win, but its certainly not an uphill battle...

In my experience X7 defenders are a hard counter to swarms.

Crackswarms can kill even a palp soontir through blocking, but defenders are both harder to block (no self stress) and have twice the health. Once the crackshots are gone you need at least 3 ties to start putting damage.
    1 tie to block
1 tie to strip the evade
1 tie to maybe stick a damage...

If you're not blocking, then it's even harder to shoot them due to the PS advantage and the focus + evade token stack.

Two of the greatest tie swarm players in the history of the game told me at worlds that they think the tie swarm either dead or on life support. With all the super accurate handfuls of red dice being chucked around, and all the green dice being negated, the poor old tie fighter is caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.. Kinetic Operator told Tyler he would rather have a concussion missile than a tie fighter right now!

X7 defenders are a very interesting matchup vs TLTs, at least vs my list which replaces one y-wing with a bumpmaster:
    scout, adaptability, feedback, intel
    3 thugs, TLT
I loose some of the raw power of 4 TLTs, but I gain some control which helps prevent shots and token stacking through blocking.
Plus with feedback the scout becomes a real threat on its own against aces.

    Flying Wing Lancer.
Inspired by the Nazi flying wing in Raiders of the lost Ark.

When I put my Winged Lancer next to a Normal Lancer now........the standard Lancer looks odd, as i'm used to it having wings !
The model has a longer custom stand to keep it up out of the way of other models.
its has some slight weathering and shading overall, and a new scratch built turret weapon.
Along with the wing area and rear upper stabilizers and thrust vector engine nacelles.....

Icareane reacted to MtnWook in Stripping minis (Alcohol demo)
    Hello, everyone!

A couple of folks have asked me about stripping X-Wing minis with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol, so I decided to take a few photos. I use Alcohol primarily because it is super cheap ($1/qt at Walgreens), biodegradable, non-toxic if spilled around animals and I can walk 2 blocks and pick it up from the market. I have also never had a problem with Alcohol eating my body putty or superglue while Simple Green has eaten both on some conversions, much to my frustration.

I will only go to the 1 hour mark with this mini as I don't really need to go all the way to base plastic to do the demo. 100% paint removal is achievable but would take an overnight soak and melt all of the glue as well. As you will see, even with just an hour dip, the peg popped out. This method is a great one for removing some paint you didn't like, and if you mess around with it you can get the timing down and only remove layers or certain areas. I did scrub the mini with a toothbrush to loosen the paint in the recesses between photos.

I hope this helps make your modeling more enjoyable, John

The original (a couple of layer of wash and accents with 1 coat of Dullcote)

    After 2 minutes

    After 5 minutes

After 10 minutes (I took the turret off to keep from breaking it while brushing the mini)

    After 30 minutes

Finally, at one hour (the peg dropped out at around 50 minutes)

At this point I am cool with it and it goes to priming and color blocking.

P.S. I went ahead and soaked it all night 'cause it took on a funky texture around 2 hrs. It removed all the base primer and ate all the glue. It actually will make the nacelles easier to finish, blind providence indeed.

All I can do is refer to our experiences in the team, where we have strong Defenders players and a very good TLT player. It's a close match, which probably our results are 60-40 in favour of defenders but, speaking as the defender player, it makes me sweat billets and I could accept it's 50-50.
If either player makes a single significant error it's probably game over.

Hello,   I just realised that one cannot edit post titles on this forum so I'm opening a new thread for my repaints instead of continuing the dagger squadron post.   Here is my first X-Wing repaint, I'm starting with the head honcho, Luke Skywalker in his Red 5 fighter.   I decided to go with a more weathered look this time, as we're talking about a ship maintained by a ragtag group of rebel terrorists continuously on the run from guardians of the law and order.

You can see more pictures and a couple of WIP shots on the blog:

    Hello, everyone!

With so much great work being posted I felt I may as well join in the fun. I painted back in the '80's but never kept up with it. Now I have been inspired to give it a try again by all of the great work here on the Forums. Here are some of the things I have been working on and some stuff on the table. Please feel free to critique and I hope you enjoy taking a look.

Please forgive the poor camera work, I need to set up a dedicated photo booth and figure out this photo editing stuff soon.

Thanks for taking a peek, Paint Casual!

Another ARC-170, this time inspired by WW2 US medium bombers, more specifically B-25 Mitchells. I named it the Executive Sweet after the real-life, and still operational, B-25 by the same name.

This argument keeps coming up with rage and it is just so weird to me every time. Whether it's soontir fel, captain yorr, electronic baffle, or nien numb rage gives 2 stress tokens which then each trigger abilities.
None of those abilities specify "whenever you recieve 1 stress token" or "once per turn when you recieve a stress token" so they trigger for every stress token you recieve.
The 'once per opportunity' rule doesn't apply here, you recieve stress token 1 and stress token 2 and stress token 1 gets a trigger and stress token 2 gets a trigger. Unless there becomes a game entity known as 'twostresstokens' such that it's different from recieving 1 stress token then receiving 1 stress token again then there is no problem triggering these abilities twice.
Moral of the story, nien can clear both rage tokens if he's in arc range 1 of an enemy.

So a little while ago I finished modifying my new Protectorate Starfighter, and I thought I would make an animation of the wings.  I intend to go back and touch up the paint a bit more, as well as adding an engine glow, but this was good enough for the angle I was shooting from.

Another nice little ship, the B-wing Prototype. Unlike most B-wing Prototype repaints this one is fairly heavily converted with the proper weapons pod, a reworked cockpit pod and lots of small details and greebles removed/altered.

I wonder how that title works with the new 2 straight when already stressed and revealing a red (assuming that stop maneuver is red). No need for Hera with the new FAQ.

(Get stressed in a prior turn), reveal the red stop, turn 180, perform a 2 white straight instead of the red stop... (potentially remove stress with kanan).
