Icareane reacted to Khyros in Lite up Falcon
So, awhile back, a few of you might remember I attempted to light my Falcon up.  I cut off the engine exhaust panel, created a mold, and made a diffuser out of hot glue with three LEDs (center teal, outer two blue).  But I couldn't really ever come up with a way to get the panel attached back on, so I started looking at other ways to do it.

    Pictures of the old system

It looked great just sitting there, but it was really unplayable since the top panel wouldn't stay on, no matter what I did.  I even tried building up some green stuff ontop of the glue, but since it moved around, the panel would move and become obviously misaligned.

So it was back to the drawing board.  And with the Rebel Transports coming out soon, I needed to finish this project up quickly.  I decided I need to build up some green stuff from the base of the Falcon in order to secure the top panel.  But this didn't leave enough space for the same hot glue diffuser.  As an alternative, I ended up with using a single teal LED and cutting up a milk carton to use as a diffuser material.  I glued this on the top panel to help align it which between the green stuff pillars and magnets holding it on securely, it now fits perfectly and it's really hard to tell the difference between it and a stock YT.

Picture with the light off to show how similar it looks to a stock YT

Internal guts.  I built up the two pillars out of green stuff, and put the magnets in them.  To make sure everything fit properly, I put a bit of celophane on top of it and then put the top panel in place and held it there for like 30min to make sure everything dried at the proper height.  I used 2 CR2032 batteries, one of each is on either side of the pillars, and as you see, the LED is in the center.

Top panel.  Green stuff and magnets.  The back has a milk carton cut out and gently glued in place to act as a diffuser for the LED.

    Final product with flash off.

    Final product with flash on.

The actual look is somewhere between the flash on and off.  For a switch, as you can see in one of the above pictures, I just have two wires that I loop together/apart to turn it on/off.  Not the most elegant, but whatever gets the job done, right?

I hope some of you enjoyed looking at this, and possibly get inspired to do the same thing, it really wasn't that difficult once I came up with a working plan on what to do.

There is a magnet in the base to allow removal for transport and during a game, and both sides of the asteroid can be used in a competitive setting.

We had 44 players at the tournament, I don't have all the lists but it came down to my swarm :
    Holwrunner with squad leader
    Dark Curse
    Backstabber
    4 Academies

against FrereSender's Biggs walks the dogs:
Biggs, 2 Daggers with AdvS and a rookie

I lost with him having a dagger on 4 shields.
Mine was the only swarm in the top 8 (and the only Empire squadron for that matter).

If you can see brush strokes (but not the underlying color), then your paint is not thinned enough, you need to water it more.
Best way to seal the ships would be some kind of varnish, I use Vallejo Model Air matt varnish  applied with a brush on my minis.

Probably a mix-up : wookiepedia lists Major Rhymer as Scimitar 1 and Captain Jonus as Scimitar 2.

I bit the bullet and gave it a go, primed the model all over and started from scratch. Yellow and white are challenging colours to get a good solid finish as I found out. But after many thin coats of both I ended up with this. It's my Krassis, I know it deviates a bit from the card artwork but I had to break up all the white on the front of the model.

    Cheers

FFG has the Wave 4 ships in the display case at the Games Center, so I took my handy dandy camera over.

As soon as you expect howlrunner to only affect a couple of ties, you should move to the 8 ties swarm I think.
It has no issues with spreading out (outside of firepower dilution) and has more bodies to soak up missiles.
Starting with Bohrdumb initial formation, you can reduce the splash damage on the alpha strike, then close ranks at close quarters.

Usually I found that I usually want to approach ennemy ships at an angle anyway.

Redid the engine glow: sadly it looks a bit better in photo than in RL but I'll take it.

Yes exactly, I got the idea from Rodent blog. Just added my own touch by inking the edges of the cardboard insert in black.
    I love Rodent's work.

    @The black man: spot on!
@Yogibaer13: I wish I'd known FFG was about to publish a B-Wing in this paintjob, I would probably have chosen another... just a couple of days too early!

Inspiring work, the extra detailing really paid off! Red tail sounds good, I suggest Red Comet (or Red Mist...).

OK I think she's done. After some drybrushing over the red areas I thinned down some ArmyPainter Dark Tone with acryllic extender and washed the whole ship then wiped off as many big panels as I could to leave the shading. That's why it's still shiny in some areas like the access pits, I really hope that stuff actually dries eventually and hpefully not shiny. Then lots of rust streaks and strong tone streaks then cleaning up the occasional panel that had gotten too dark before adding paint chips to the red and some grey worn down to metal chipped areas. She's a touch darker than my other two YTs but I'm pretty happy with the result. I may have to add some more stains to the regular Falcon. So anyone got a good name for her? I kinda like Red Tail but I'm open to better suggestions.
