we already more or less have confirmation that Edge Studio will be producing a TI RPG (probably a Genesys sourcebook) in

    the near future

Do we? I know there was a lot of speculation about that when Genesys launched, but I haven’t heard anything more about it since (and, in fact, have heard that Genesys is practically dead). I’d love to hear otherwise.

I'd love to see (TI) Armada remade as a miniatures game akin to (SW) Armada.

As would I. Getting different fleets of miniatures for each race would be awesome.

This “board game v. minis game” argument is definitely not THE most pedantic argument I’ve ever heard from gaming nerds, but it’s close.

Is it even relevant to the conversation?

for me a "miniatures game" is any game that has miniatures. But that isn't a exclusive to other descriptors. My favorite game is a miniatures board game, warhammer and X-Wing are miniature war games.

To me, the distinction is Boardgame vs Wargame. And for me what makes the distinction is whether you create your own army list from a pool of options, or have set forces (or very limited forces, and there are certainly games that blur the line).

Imperial Assault was interesting because it could be both. The default way of playing was more like a dungeon-crawl, RPG board game, but it could also be played as a wargame.

  3. So it has been announced that the Star Wars miniatures games are all being moved from FFG to Atomic Mass Games.

I am of mixed feeling about this because I was hoping FFG's recent development of the TI universe in different areas would lead to a miniatures game set in the universe. Now, I have to assume that is considerably less likely.

What do you guys think? More games set in TI more or less likely now?

The outcome would be either the elected player/planet/etc. or the “For” or “Against” option.

Is there anything to back that up? I have a couple of guys that are insisting “predict an outcome” includes things like “player A will not be elected”.

  5. The biggest chunk of lore is probably the racial backgrounds on the race sheets in the game, and those are the same in both TI3 & 4.

There was a second game set in the universe called Rex. It was a reskin of the old Dune game. Presumably it had some more lore, but I never got it to see how much was new.

There is a TI novel coming out soon that I imagine will expand the galaxy a fair bit. Fractured Void.

  6. I made some fleet trays like the broken token ones.

For third I made boxes for all the cards, labeled for each deck, with the lids serving as trays for the fighter, GF, and RG tokens, but haven’t gotten around to it yet for 4th.

also made an insert for the map to make 5 player games balanced. Have to resize it for 4th.  I guess they’re calling that sort of thing hyperlanes now.

    First all, Duranium Armor does not trigger "at the end of the round";

Wrong “round”. I was referring to when regular repair happens, at the end of the game round, during the status phase.

Fleet attacks, gets enough hits to destroy all defenders. Defenders get one hit back. Put hit on Dreadnought. Can’t use Duranium armor now because Dread used sustain damage this turn. Combat ends because no defenders left. Does the Dread really have to wait till the Status Phase at the end of the round to repair, making Duranium Armor useless in that situation (very useful in other situations, but not now)?

  8. Exactly what I was thinking.

The ability to loan out your agent and commander abilities is so different from what you usually think of for those types of mechanics.

Also, I just finished some Star Trek books where Captain Kirk and the Enterprise helped with a Romulan Civil War, so I can envision what is going on.

  9. Didn't he say the goal is 3-4 codexes a year?  Perhaps a TI Codex Annual that compiles the years issues into one physical product.

Assuming they actually manage to keep this going. I've seen before stuff like this that promise a semi-regular schedule and then the 2nd issue is a month or two late, the 3rd issue is 6-9 months late, then there are some promises that "we're working on the next one" and then it's never heard of again.

I will say, that a regular 'zine like this is much more likely to succeed if they release more games set in the universe. TI Genesys RPG (hopefully with books on each race), maybe a variation of Star Wars Armada with capital ships (THAT WOULD BE SO COOL!!!) (and sooooo expensive). Whatever other TI themed games they can come up with.

  10. So, the exploration cards are clearly the replacement for the Distant Suns option. I have some random thoughts.

Unlike DS, apparently all of the Exploration cards are "good". Some may have a cost to use, but none of them outright do bad stuff.

The swinginess of DS was one of the main criticisms of it, that one bad draw could cripple you early on. Do you think having only good results fixes this?

The other side is that Exploration results seem to be better than most DS results were.

If I understand the cards correctly, they also seem to provide permanent benefits, unlike the one and done results of most DS tokens. Is that going to make them even more powerful, or is the idea that people can fight over a really good planet now so it's less game breaking?

It sounded like you didn't have to explore as soon as you landed on a planet. What do you think of that? Or do I have that wrong? (I thought there was a point where they indicated exploring a planet after capturing it from another player).

I don't know. A lot of people really liked the concept of DS, but there were a lot of very valid critiques of the mechanic in 3rd. I'm just wondering if Exploration fixes the issue, or if it is just a reskin of the same problems. (but harder to ignore since more things reference exploration in the expansion).

  11. Anyone else get the impression that a lot of PoK is geared toward increasing players making deals and trading with each other?

It seemed like there were a lot of new abilities that were designed to be used to help someone else, as well as revamping promissory notes and the like.

What do you guys think? Is that impression just me? Do you think the game needed a boost to non-combat interaction, and do you think they have succeeded?
