Bronze got a reaction from Soakman in Scenario Where Doom Awaits and it's Aftermath (Spoiler potential, but light talk)
What has been the overall consensus and feel after approaching the previously released scenario?
At first, of course there is a feeling of devastation(if it didn't go well for you). All that time and effort that you put in is suddenly lost. That feeling lasted for several hours, but then it waned. The experiences that they have provided for us in the Arkham Files is what is being delivered to us. This is what we should expect from this type of game.
There will be many varied degrees of hate for the decisions that were made in this scenario and the final outcomes. That I don't doubt. It took me several attempts in the first campaign to complete the last scenario to satisfaction and I assume that it will take me several attempts to do so in this campaign; and i haven't even seen anything about the last scenario yet even. The first play through is always the roughest. Especially since you typically don't know what is around the corner (unless you peak at stuff before you play; but that is your own choice). It is a cooperative game after all however though. If you so choose not to deal with the punishment of the reset, then you can simply replay that last scenario and move forward or develop your own house rules.
The second and third passes playing through this thus far have me building my characters significantly different than the first pass, making better decisions along the way and including cards I wouldn't have considered in that first pass as well. The second pass didn't fair well either for me. Even though I was well prepared, still that scenario threw me more curve-balls than I was able to handle and a key character went down faster than they should have which put me into a bad situation to complete it once more.
But that's ok. The game is providing me with replay potential. Otherwise I would likely be waiting for this next pack to come along the whole time. Again, people will have different opinions. They don't have the time to keep replaying stuff or don't like the idea of custom ruling the replay the scenario etc. because they want the real experience. They can feel cheated from this experience. Don't give up if you enjoy it though. You can pull through. Or if you would like, play the last scenario as a standalone to experience it while your other characters are making their trek back up the hill. That is also an option.
One of these times, I'll make my way through that portal and that feeling of accomplishment will be all that much stronger from the failures I have endured and all that more rewarding.
What has been your experiences and feelings after playing this particular scenario?

Bronze reacted to Leniel in FFG Cancels Kotei w/less than 30 days to go
The cancellation has negatively impacted me in that this was the first FFG OP (outside of store events) I was to attend and was looking forward to it. Unfortunately, there were non-refundable costs associated with cancelling the plane / hotel accommodations for this event. Although Cascade Games has said that this has never happened in their 20 years in the business, I am now forced to hesitate when planning for attending an FFG event, especially given the lack of transparency when the decision was made and the lack of official reasons put forth outside of speculations from other organizations.

Bronze reacted to yujufrazer in shameful display rulling versus shinjo tatsuo rulling
We are stating the same thing, your saying he cannot do his action cause he has to "Choose" him self which is exactly why he cannot do his action when hes already at the battlefield. My bullet point i posted from the rules reference is stating exactly that. He cannot do his effect because he him self cannot be moved. Since
When an entity moves, it cannot move to its same (current) placement. If there is no valid destination for a move, the move attempt cannot be made.
Shinjo Tatsuo's ability cannot be used if he is already participating in a conflict.
The targering requirement is to choose himself and another character, but targets are only eligible if they can be affected by the ability's effects; since Shinjo Tatsuo cannot affect himself, he cannot choose himself as a target, which means that you cannot satisfy targeting requirements, so you cannot attempt to initiate the ability at all.
heres the card ruling. What your saying is that because he cannot target himself he cannot do it, im saying he cannot target him self because he cannot move. Also any effect that would move him with out targeting himself still wouldnt work because of the above bullet point

Bronze reacted to Schmoozies in Kitsuki Yaruma and public forum
It should be discarded as it has "left Play" (become a face down province) and if the province is later flipped face up again needs to be broken twice again.
-
Bronze reacted to Horizonshard in Ikoma Ujiaki
In order to use his ability there must be at least one province face down. This is due to the fact that the word "Then" is used for bringing the two characters into play. The statement after a "then" must have the statement before it be successful. For a statement to be successful it must have changed the game state somehow. So the statement "turn each facedown card in each of your provinces face up" must turn at least one card face up to change the game state and allow the next line to take effect.
Rules reference text (pg16): The word “Then” If the effect text of a card ability includes the word “then,” the text preceding the word then must be successfully resolved in full (i.e. the game state must change to reflect the intent of the pre-then aspect of the effect in its entirety) before the remainder of the effect described after the word “then” can be resolved

Bronze reacted to AradonTemplar in Pit Trap
The intent obviously is for the card to stay in play, of course. But as written, it does not. I think we had confirmation that it'd need errata, but don't recall specifically.

Bronze reacted to akodobanzai in Two Major Dissappointments from PAX Unplugged
Long, long time player, first time poster.
When it came to L5R at PAX Unplugged, it was a HUGE disappointment on two major fronts. Let's dive right in.
1. FFG, Cascade, and Bad Rulings
There were a lot of bad rulings made by the judges at this event. To be fully honest, none of these were done to me directly, but many of these were done to folks from my local playgroup and players that we knew. Here are some of those rulings:
a. Akodo Toturi was ruled that you could use the reaction on defense and that the defender would gain the benefits, not the attacker. The ring resolved was Ring of Fire, btw.
b. The mulligan rule was not used as ruled by Nate French. (Nate clarified via email, which was later shared via discord, that after a player mulligans his dynasty cards, they can look at the new cards before drawing conflict cards; this was not allowed at PAX)
c. Ring of the Void's wording was ruled that whatever is on the reference card is the official wording, and not what is in the Rules Reference.
d. Bayushi Manipulator and Contingency Plans got different rulings from different judges. One ruled that it affected the physical dial. Another judge ruled that it changed the bid but the exchange of honor was still based on the dial, which was not changed.
e. Base force was defined as whatever was printed on the card. Someone who tried to play 2 Way of the Lion was told they had to go by printed force for the second one.
Also concerning was the fact that some of the floor judges admitted to various players that they had never played L5R before judging this event. They were brought on simply because they were good Magic judges.
According to the judges at the event, they work for a company called Cascade and not FFG. Furthermore, it appears that Cascade has been contracted by FFG to run and judge all of the US L5R events for the next year, including GenCon 2018. If this is true, then this is a problem.
PAX was a Grand Kotei, which means it was one of FFG's major tournaments of the year. To find out that it was judged by people who had never even played the game before is not acceptable. If Cascade is going to continue to represent FFG and be responsible for making rulings at these events, then there needs to be some training. At the very least, they should pick up a deck and play a game so they begin to understand how the game actually plays out.
The overall accountability falls on FFG. If they are going to rely on others to run their major events for them, then FFG needs to make sure that the company they've chosen has all the tools they need. There also needs to be a living, public source made available where rulings are kept and up to date. Judges need this as a resource to make informed decisions. And players also need to know how cards are being ruled, which affects their deck building and play decisions.
Rulings affect game outcomes. It's not too much to ask that players are made aware of rulings and changes. It's also not too much to ask that judges at major events are knowledgeable and competent. I don't mean to be hard on the individual people who were judging at PAX, but if you've never even picked up an L5R deck, you are not competent to judge at a Grand Kotei. This falls on Cascade and more so on FFG to make sure this doesn't happen again.
2. The new chant is unacceptable by FFG's own standards
Full disclaimer, I want "Utz-Banzai!" back. I do not agree that it is offensive. For every article online that claims that this is what kamikaze pilots yelled during their attacks, there are just as many articles that say this just isn't true. And to claim that the word Banzai is offensive is an insult to Japanese people everywhere. The triple Banzai has a very specific use in Japanese culture. To censor it by attempting to assign negative connotations to it is indeed insulting. I welcome everyone, especially FFG, to do some research on the triple Banzai.
Having said that, FFG earlier this year decided to end "Utz-Banzai!" and gave the following reason:
"Unfortunately, the real-world historical context of similar phrases has connected a number of negative associations to this chant, which undermines the tradition by detracting from the sense of community and positivity it seeks to establish."
What does this have to do with the new chant? Well, apparently it ACTUALLY has some connections to real-world phrases with negative historical associations. More directly, it is a Nazi chant. Or at least, very similar to one.
Interesting story time. I met a few gamers from England at PAX and I decided to do an experiment. In the L5R Facebook group, the similarity between the new chant and Nazi chants from WWII has been pointed out by European players, mainly British and German
players. I asked them to come witness the beginning of the Grand Kotei on Saturday. I didn't give them any heads up, as I wanted to see their reactions, if any. As soon as the second verse was uttered, they both looked at me wide-eyed. Needless to say, we had an interesting conversation afterwards.
FFG needs to look into this matter. Please, don't just take my word for it. Something this SIMILAR to real-world historical context with a number of negative associations needs to be addressed.
If the ultimate decision is to do away with all chants, then so be it. But I think it needs to be said that out of the two chants, one is clearly not offensive and one clearly is similar enough to be.
Also, I would like to add before any such suggestions are made, that I have tried to email FFG before, at least about the concern regarding their new chant. I suspect it has been ignored or at the very least overlooked. I have noticed that FFG responds more readily to public feedback, so I am attempting this route. My hope is that both of these matters are looked into before the next major tournament.

Bronze reacted to kiramode in Characters I over and underrated...
He's good, but he's not break the game good. When I first saw him I thought he might be one of the 3 or 4 best dynasty cards in the game. He's clearly not that. Hence the asterisk

Bronze reacted to TheItsyBitsySpider in For Honour and Glory Dynasty Pack Preview
That lighthouse is such a scary card. Getting people low enough in honor where they have to bid one, while that is in play, is going to be flat out oppressive.

Bronze reacted to Khudzlin in Crab Stronghold Action
Values are recalculated each time a new modifier is applied. You just have to remember which modifiers are applied to each card.

Bronze reacted to Bayushi Tsubaki in Dishonor is not inherently NPE - The sour grapes need to stop
For more than a decade, people have complained that anything that isn't pure "bushido brawl" (ie: smashing face via military, or now mil/pol I suppose) is bad for the game and unfun inherently. Dishonor has taken the brunt of the hate, in my experience, but Honor has had it's fair share too.
I was reaaally hoping this nonsense would die with the CCG. Unfortunately it doesn't seem so.
Stop. Just... just stop. This dead horse needs a break from the beatings.
There is more than one victory condition in this game. If you don't plan for that, you're going to have a bad time. It's not the victory condition's fault, it's your fault.
Build your deck appropriately, or expect to get destroyed by play-styles you *decided* to ignore.

Bronze reacted to Tonbo Karasu in Is your local community enforcing the official clan roles?
No, but I plan to enforce them on myself. It makes for a more interesting deck construction challenge, IMO.

Bronze reacted to Dahawi in New Clan Roles + Story Decision
I'm a scorpion player, and from a personal view I do not agree with the decision made though I completely support and admire the reasons why the decision was made. I don't think back handed compliment will break the game, and I really wanted the extra 3 influence afforded by a keeper role, but frankly the bravery required to make such a bold and it seems unpopular choice to do something you feel will benefit all players of the game makes me proud to be scorpion

Bronze reacted to Hinomura in New Clan Roles + Story Decision
Good of the game before good of the Clan. Always.
I'm fine with people disagreeing with the choice. I earned the right to make it, but I still absolutely solicited the opinion of many people I respected before commiting to it.
If anyone wants a different role, I wish you the best of luck, and I'll see you at Worlds this time next year.
-
Bronze reacted to Hinomura in New Clan Roles + Story Decision
I dedicated the pick to Brad Emon. His reasoning behind not wanting Keeper was a genuine desire to keep the game fun and thriving, and Backhand had the potential to really destroy people's will to play.
Brad was totally willing to embrace being a villain to make this happen, and I have nothing but respect for that.
If there are Scorpion players who aren't willing to be villains, then this may not be the clan for you.
If people wanted a different choice, they had the opportunity to beat out Brad and myself. We finished first and second placed Scorpions at Worlds. I reckon we earned the right to make this choice.

Bronze reacted to GoldCrow18 in Grand Kotei PAX Unplugged
Quick question regarding the new sets legality for PAX Unplugged.
I have been informed that the new sets are not legal until 11 days post-release.
Given that the first pack releases on November 9, eleven days would mean that it wouldn't be legal until November 20th, several days AFTER PAX's Grand Kotei.
I have been unable to find a definitive answer on this but feel it is critically imperative to have the answer to this so that preparations can be made.
Anyone have any idea as to the legality of the newest 6 in 6 weeks sets come November 18?
Thanks! See you in Philly!
And in keeping with "The Way of the Crab", DEFEND THE WALL!!!
PS:
For those presently at World's, BEST OF LUCK to you ALL but most importantly, GO CRAB!
I'm interested to see what Lion will do with that Crane Bushi spy!

Bronze reacted to Tokhuah in Clan Representation for Day 3
The numbers are closer than yesterday but the top four are the same. I imagine further thinning of the bottom three clans represented after today.
-
Bronze reacted to Shu2jack in L5R at Worlds today!
Thank you. I suppose the Dragon make sense. With event cancel being a supposed very real thing, a clan that can rely on attachments can have an edge.
-
Bronze reacted to DGLaderoute in At Worlds, How are they calculating Most Honorable Clan?
The tournament software has, for each match, a checkbox to indicate which of the two players involved had the higher Honor at the end of the match. This is independent of who won/lost, and the type of victory. I'm thinking this is probably how the organizers can determine which clan had the most Honor overall, irrespective of its aggregate performance in the event.

Bronze reacted to Casanunda in Issues with the Day 2 Cut math - (4-2's make the Day 2 cut, but it is impossible for them to make the Top 16)
Playing more games against good competition is a negative player experience? You must really dislike this game.
-
Bronze reacted to TheItsyBitsySpider in Issues with the Day 2 Cut math - (4-2's make the Day 2 cut, but it is impossible for them to make the Top 16)
They allow them in because there are other prizes besides just the title to fight over. Top of clan and earning wins for prizes from the prize wall are worth still fighting for.
-
Bronze reacted to Asako Michi in Issues with the Day 2 Cut math - (4-2's make the Day 2 cut, but it is impossible for them to make the Top 16)
Making it to Day 2 awarded players prizes. Plus, top 32 get additional prizes, so even if they don't make it to top 16 there's still recognition to be won. I'm not sure I get why it's cruel to have the extra players participate in Day 2. Even if they can't make the top 16, they made it farther than many of the other competitors. If making top 16 was the only point, most competitors would/should just drop out after their 2nd loss.
