Surviving the Tyrancy of Turrets and Tricksy Dice
z0m4d replied to ficklegreendice's topic in X-Wing
You're glossing over that a tight turn on a large ship includes a large ship base. Small base ships can follow. Focus fire with mutliples and kill. Or take its escorts and evade it the rest of the game. Back to basics stuff, man. You know this, you just don't like it, and you're confusing dislike with broken. -
It's a fad.

They must travel farther due to their large base, making it easy for small base opponents to tail unless you can outwit them. A turret that can be shot at is a wasted turret. -

You do realize that smart turret play means staying out of other ships' firing arcs, right? (Hint: so they can't fire on you.) I don't know where people got the idea that just because you have 360 degree firing that you suddenly get to disregard flying altogether. It's nonsense. -
Any news/pics from X-Wing Miniatures booth at San Diego Comic-Con?

I didn't see that. Why are they a bad example? -

I imagine if the FFG X-wing mat sells well then i have no doubt that a death star surface will be next. Hopefully they will make a nice turret box set too http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=287&CategoryID=13170&PageIndex=3 Scroll down to Space Station Lasers, a GF9 Battlefield in a Box. -
I agree with this statement. Fat Turrets are NOT overpowered. One single 3 (or 4 at range one/with Dash) dice 360 attack for 50+ points is not overpowered in any way, shape or form. What they are, however, is forgiving. The 360 turret gives you so much freedom when choosing moves on your dial - you don't have to worry so much about getting an enemy ship in arc as you do about dodging theirs. And even if you can't manage to dodge your opponents arc (with a strong, fast dial and likely Engine Upgrade or Barrel Roll on Dash on top), you have a lot of hull to chew through and a couple of ways of mitigating damage. Fat Turrets are not taken because they're overpowered. You can do a LOT more damage per turn with an equivalent number of points of small base ships than you can with a Fat Turret. Fat Turrets are taken because they're forgiving. Because they're less risky. Because in a competitive environment, you don't want to be one-shotted and you don't want to find yourself without a shot. They're taken because they're a crutch. That doesn't make them overpowered, it just makes them easy to use. Stop making sense. We don't take kindly to that 'round here.

no no, I'm ranting because you say I am. That makes much more sense. I never said you're ranting. you're batting real low on the whole constructive post thing, zom. please at least give the barest hint of effort if you're going to stick around Turrets don't need coping. You need coping. Constructive. -

It's fairly implicit, which is why so many have railed, "Not again. Can we please just have one day off?" The original poster writing to the effect of, "But I didn't actually SAY I hated turrets and think they're OP," is thinly veiled when it's obvious from the context. -

Ficklegreendice, you've defended and red planned yourself many times in this thread, and accused others of misunderstand your original post. Is it really all of them or only you? Edit: phone auto correct; "red planned" should be "reexplained". -
Why?? He's proposing this a Defender title not a modification Because the Defender might not need it. No one should prejudge the Twin Ion Engines before we see the firsthand experience and impact to the meta.

Separatists vs Rebel, Separatists vs Empire, Republic verus Rebels Republic vs Empire actually can be justified in story IMO, especially given that the game is still Legends material. According to the Essential Guide to Warfare there were still Separatist holdout groups active during the OT era and while many of these stayed out of the Alliance's way and vice versa there was at least one sector where the GCW was a three way fight between the Empire, the Alliance, and the local Separatist holdout forces. Republic verus Rebel could be explained as rebels operating in a low priority Imperial area which never received the newer ships. Imperial verus Republic could be explained as the Empire facing a rebel force which still has the older hardware. Where it would be a little more complicated would be a three or four way game with Rebellion, Empire, and Republic forces all facing each other but still not impossible to explain. The Republic ships could be from an independent resistance force that distrusts the Alliance enough to be willing to fight both Alliance and Empire. Perhaps they used to be part of the Alliance and feel it betrayed them somehow, most likely by not answering a call for help from the resistance force for some reason. If you have to go to such great lengths to suspend my disbelief, you haven't.

Empire vs Empire or Rebel vs Rebel can't be avoided fairly in a tournament setting. Allowing anachronistic Separatists vs Rebel or Republic vs Empire is avoidable. It's too ridiculous for me. The ARC-170 is an ugly flapping insect and the N-1 is is a glittering mosquito, but the avoidable absurdity would be too much for me. The CEO stated his intentions not to include them. But if you think he's making a mistake because you happen like them, then by all means continue to believe he'll change his mind.

Empire Day? You realize the colonists rebelled when they signed the Declaration of Independence. So you have it backwards.
