In this interview Sam also said they were planning "unique" character options, so I am wondering if we're going to see more Nonhuman options akin to the Kitsune Impersonator... I'm definitely also beginning to think we're going to cover more Naga stuff in general.

I would not be surprised if we saw a Tengu Swordmaster school, but I would doubt we are going to see something as big as a Naga school. Naga are very distinct from humans, similar to the Nezumi in that regard, and while a "shapeshifter spirit" pretending to be a mortal works (Tengu Swordmaster, Kitsune Impersonator) within the current system, something like a Naga or Nezumi would probably need a rework similar to Path of Waves.

I actually disagree. The text of the DLC makes it clear that this is primarily a school that is taught outside of any clans structures. Yes, many Falcon are taught this school, too, but it is not their school.

Similarly, the Ishiken is not a Phoenix school. The Phoenix try to be the main training for Void users, but it is explicitly not a Phoenix school.

Now sure, you can always take any school with any character, but cross-clan training needs extra explanation and these schools are something else actually.

So, that's the word of the designer. Organizationally, the Phoenix oversee it. From a narrative standpoint, the Ishiken Initiate is a Phoenix Clan school. Like ALL schools, it can be taken by any affiliation as long as the GM approves it, but the narrative default is Phoenix. As such, cross-clan Ishiken need the explanation; Phoenix Clan initiates do not.

Regarding the Mazoku's Enforcer Tradition, this one I am much more just "The Falcon Clan are cool, so they get it," from a personal standpoint. However, using your own argument - Falcon Clan Bushi don't need an explanation beyond "I am a Falcon Clan Bushi" to have this school. Spirits from the underworld could also claim this, so it would be fair to ALSO list this as a Spirit School. I choose to list it as a Falcon Clan school because the Falcon Clan appear on my list before Spirits and the Falcon Clan are cool.

There are two new schools "suitable for new characters created in the afterlife" in Deathly Turns (DLC for Wheel of Judgement), pages 24-25.

Thanks for letting me know this got posted.

But not necessarily pheonix. Yes most of them do that. But we are talking player characters so they are unusual.

Strictly speaking, ANY school can be taken by any Clan, so that argument does not help with the categorization.

Read pages 112 and 113. The Ishiken Initiate School is taught at the Starry Heaven Sanctuary, which is a Phoenix Clan holding. This school is run by the Master of Void, a Phoenix Clan shugenja. Also, page 113:

As such, I stand by my Indexing of the Ishiken Initiate School as a Phoenix Clan School which is not associated to any particular family, hence why it is listed as it is.

You have the Ishiken down as an Isawa school - I had been led to believe it wasn't.  You'll need to check with someone who has the book to be sure.

I have the book, and I have it listed a Phoenix School, but not necessarily an Isawa school. This is because, if you read the fluff surrounding "Ishiken" in the section on Inversions and Void magic (page 112), it explains that training of Ishiken is a duty which falls to the Phoenix Clan and is the purpose of the Starry Heaven Sanctuary. If an Ishiken is discovered, the Phoenix Clan pulls out all the stops to get them into the Phoenix Clan. As such, the Ishiken Initiate School is most distinctly a Phoenix School and should be listed as such.

Not quite true, the school Mastery ability is being able to hold two spirits in your body...so until you reach mastery, you're limited to just one. Granted, a single kansen loose in the capital could cause some mayhem, but I don't think it would be full “Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!” trouble like in Ghostbusters.

...well okay, maybe the human sacrifice part, it is a kansen after all.

You just need a BIG enough spirit.

    Like an Oni Lord.

    why new core rules?

Think of it as less "new core rules" and more like "Age of Rebellion" / "Galactic Republic" books from Star Wars. Basically, a book which can entirely stand on its own, without the Core Rules of the L5R RPG, built around building the sort of "larger than life" heroes that made up the Seven Thunders and the Founders of the families of the Great Clans.

And because the sort of rules which would apply to "modern" era L5R, like School Curriculum, would not apply necessarily to the "Dawn of the Empire". There's no studying at the Kakita Dueling Academy, because the Kakita Dueling Academy hasn't been started yet. That alone is an entirely new overhaul of the campaign. No Great Clans as well would also be an overhaul.

While Path of Waves does a good job in supplementing and adapting the Core Rules, it does not stand sufficiently on its own. And once you release a new Core Rules for a different Era, you open the door for additional splat books balanced on that Core Rules, rather than the original core rules.

  8. I expect the next "Setting Expansion" book that we will see will probably be a "Minor Clans & Brotherhood of Shinsei" book, as while I believe Writ of the Wilds will have some details on the Brotherhood, they really do need to be fleshed out fully to the pillar of Rokugani society. Similar to how Path of Waves is "Ronin & Gaijin", I think the Minor Clans book would be good to have the Brotherhood in there too.

Right now, Edge Studios has specifically not confirmed if they are doing another Setting Expansion after Writ of the Wilds. I would expect, honestly, for them to finish up the Great Clan splats before moving onto another Setting Expansion, if only because they will have only the Scorpion and the Unicorn left to cover after Writ.

After a Minor Clans book, if I were planning for the RPG, I would actually take it a step PAST the "Imperial Histories", and go with an entirely new "Core Rules" set during a different "time period" of Rokugani History. "Legend of the Five Rings: The First War" would be good, also a "Legend of the Five Rings: Thousand Years of Darkness" for the 'What if Fu Leng wins?' scenario.

Dang, thinking about my hopes for what they do with the Minor Clans makes me really want to go back and play a 4th edition game.

I'm hoping for FFG to get off its duff, and give us the L5R RPG Foundry, so we (the community) can start producing content for their game in a semi-official capacity, and create some amazing Minor Clans.

I would hope no Second Day of Thunder at all...

I think this is inevitable, all things considered. But it's still probably a ways off. November 2023 was my original guess, so I would put it at 2024 now.

"Our first objective is to continue to make books to highlight each Clan"

So - Path of Waves aside, we're going to be getting Clan sourcebooks for the foreseeable.

"Beyond the Clan Books, let's just say we have some really big ideas and know what an exciting destiny we are leading the world of Rokugan to."

It'll be interesting to see what they do for this version's Day of Thunder.

This is basically confirming the pattern we had so far. L5R RPG is following the Splat Book format, where you have Big Books (Emerald Empire, Path of Waves) which substantively expand the game, and then Splat Books (Shadowlands, Courts of Stone, Celestial Realms, Writ of the Wilds) which expand on one Great Clan, one Minor Clan, and one aspect of the setting. With Writ of the Wilds, we have the following layout:

    • Shadowlands - Crab Clan, Falcon Clan, and the Shadowlands
    • Courts of Stone - Crane Clan, Deer Clan, and courtly intrigue
    • Celestial Realms - Phoenix Clan, Centipede Clan, and the spirit realms
    • Writ of the Wilds - Dragon Clan, TBD (I'm just going to predict Moth Clan, since this creates the cycle of old Minor Clan - new Minor Clan), and wilderness regions
    • TBD - Lion Clan, TBD, and TBD (probably Warfare / Mass Battle)
    • TBD - Scorpion Clan, TBD, and TBD (probably Cities / Crime & Justice, with a focus on Ryoko Owari)
    • TBD - Unicorn Clan, TBD, and TBD (no clue on this one)

  11. Any discussion of the month of May 2020 would be incomplete without a simple statement.

    Black Lives Matter.

And so, this is my coverage of May 2020 in Legend of the Five Rings. And don't worry, my article about Dueling is still coming. We just split it into two this month.
