I predict we will see some minor points reductions. Maybe the removal of clone standby sharing. I think FFG will be conservative. You can't just apply a hammer to a whole system and expect good results.

Agreed.

The abstraction is only really applied to the attack and defense sequence. But I don't think adding additional steps makes the game tactically deeper.

It's pretty easy to recognize what does and does not work in this game. If my buddy and I were playtesters from the get-go, we could have solved a lot of the issues in power level - just from playing the game a lot. I was avid the first two heavies needed a points drop from the beginning. After playing just a few games I could see that! Vader and palps are both too expensive for what they do. Han is too expensive. The AT-ST is still a little too expensive. The T-47 is too expensive. The land speeder is too expensive. The mandalorians are too expensive. I think this unit is dead on arrival, after the games I've played with/against it. Bobba is a little too expensive. Most of the imperial and rebel special forces are too expensive in points as well. Dewbacks are way too expensive. The F.D is a little too expensive. Most of the corps weapon upgrades are too expensive. Refresh weapons are too expensive. They should be cheaper than normal weapons because you must sacrifice an action. Action economy is super important in this game. A lot of the characters are simply too expensive, because you usually need to have upgrades on them, which can increase their cost immensely. ... I feel droids and clones are mostly in the right places power wise. I just think the issues are so glaringly obvious, at least to me. The designers can make everything have a viable place if it is costed appropriately.

Everything should be viable for top tables.

1. I wasn't saying that free rules alone make the game good. 2. Whether a game is more towards a 'board game' isn't really an issue. The tokens are just necessary components for tracking effects and alternately activated units. Cards are just an alternate way of keeping track of stats, rather than a printed army roster or book. There is no real inherent reason why these things are worse. Maybe they clutter the table a little, but it doesn't make it any less a war-game. 3. Just because you have additional steps in the attack sequence doesn't make 40k deeper. 40k essentially boils down to moving and attacking, placement to secure objectives. With a limited number of turns to achieve those things. The first player also still has a large advantage, as players activate whole armies. The more you kill, the more you put your opponent on the back foot, as they will have less of their army to respond in the subsequent go. The ranges are also longer, so most things are in striking range at the beginning. Conversely, legion requires you to move a lot in the first few turns to set up advantageous range bands. It also offers more choice when a unit is activated, you can also aim, dodge, standby, refresh. Because some abilities are exhaust, you have to be picky when you use some abilities. Alternate activation also means you can't get annihilated by alpha strikes, or at least they are mitigated somewhat. I don't think legion is vastly more superior to 40k. Both suffer from the large amount of randomness built into their dice roll sequences. Swingy dice can destroy even the best commanders. But legion is still a valid tabletop war-game, with a lot of good traits. 4. What do you mean by a more advanced rule set? What would be in that that makes the game deeper?
-
1. Free rules are what makes this game good. GW loves making morons buy new books every 2-3 years for a rules update. It's an atrocious business cycle. 2. 40k rules are not deep. Their game mechanics boil down to move and shoot/melee. It's essentially a combo dice simulator at this point. I've played 40k since 3rd ed, and it is not a tactically valuable game. Don't confuse volume of rules with depth. 3. The one thing 40k does have, is variety. There are lots of different factions, and lots of different unit types. Legion is limited to 4 factions, 3 of which are humans. So they kinda feel the same-ish.

Let's play a game and try to guess what it was. 😆 Did you not know who won if both players had equal wounds on their evaporators?

This.

If they nerf GAR too hard, they'll just have to turn around and un-nerf them at some point in the future. Such is the ebb and flow of the nerf/buf spiral. If they screw GAR so be it. We'll see the results in the change in tournament meta. But I promise you they will end up just adjusting them back to being strong if they push the pendulum too far this time.
-
No! Clones must remain masters of the universe!
-
Well if they want people to stop playing GAR, that's their prerogative.

I want a force teleportation ability, that makes my jedi re-deploy wherever they want onto the battlefield. I want them all to come with disengage. I want them to all be able to re-roll all attack dice. Star wars is about jedi and sith. Everything else doesn't matter. Just have a game about glow rod ninjas smashing against each other for two hours.

People keep thinking clones are going to be brought down in power. Alex was quite clear that the other factions were going to be raised up. He said he didn't want to cut off the tall poppy.
-
Anything beyond getting rid of standby sharing would be too much IMO. Standby sharing probably makes the game worse. But over-all the clone faction is pretty cool with its other mechanics.
-
But my life sucks and I need entertainment.
-
I have the smallest violin playing right now.

The problem with legion is there isn't enough variety. 4 Factions is pathetic. And they insist on continuing with the OT factions. Flesh out the ******* clones and droids already! Or better yet, release Scum or the sequel trilogy factions. I'm sick of versing the same **** over and over. Release some new ****!

BUT MAH CLONE WARS!!!

I'm just saying that the paint jobs of the models could be a factor. If you look at a lot of the 40k battle report channels, their paint jobs are often very good. There is a lot of production quality. I'm not trying to denigrate the efforts of the people who make legion content on youtube. I think some of it is really solid. But I think it may help push the game that little bit further if some more attention was paid to paint jobs. If I offended anyone I apologize.

Subfactions how do u think there going to do them?
lologrelol replied to lunitic501's topic in Star Wars: Legion
I think themed list rules are a mistake. There have been a lot of complaints of 3rd edition warmachine, because of the prevalence of themed lists essentially stifling vanilla list building. It just ends up shoehorning people into particular list builds more and more. Having a commander that works a bit better with certain units (like the entourage ability) is a more balanced way IMO.
