frankelee got a reaction from Chamberlin in Delayed Release to Q3 2021
Maybe if they shut down the forums and push the game release back, everybody will forget how much they hate it. Or at least it's failure won't look like a big black mark when Asmodee tries to sell them.

frankelee reacted to FrogTrigger in Embrace progress! And stop acting like old nags...
Progress just for the sake of progress is never good. They had an amazing story, theme and game engine at their disposal and decided to literally threw it all away to make something bloated and over priced with what unfortunately can only be seen as distorted horrible game art compared to the standard.
There was a natural progression here, from Descent 1 to 2 then Imperial Assault. The next step building on all of that would have been fantastic. Instead we got this mess.

I feel like this version of Descent is going to push a lot of people to say “you know, I’ve been wanting a game like this for awhile, maybe it’s time to see what all of the Gloomhaven hype is about...”

They used the name for recognitions’s sake. And they may get less customers for that. Oh, the irony.

After sleeping on the announcement last night one thing popped into my head. The setting is ill suited for the art style and app focus.
With Mansions of Madness the app provided this level of the unknown suitable for the Cthulu mythos. The comic style works far better with super heroes than the gritty realism needed for high fantasy. This could of been another game in the terranoth universe similar to how have Arkham and Eldritch horror. Or they could of used another one of their brands like Netrunner that would of felt more succinct with App intergration.
Think about it what if this was Netrunner instead? What if heroes were runners and the dungeon was a corp they were infiltrating. What if you were hacking into the App, what if the town section was you upgrading your gear after a job.
I think the Descent brand and the comparisons this game will receive because of it will hurt this game in the long run.

I've played with 3d cardboard terrain before and it can be amazing, but the terrain in this game doesn't look good enough for the price.
An example of good cardboard terrain:

Do you like paint by numbers? You, too can create your very own Descent: Legends of the Dark artwork by following these 5 easy steps!
But seriously the comic book looking flat, limited palette artwork is a big turn-off. The textures used for the dungeon/water/lava/forest were extremely simplistic and bland. Coming from Descent 2E, the artwork in general is a huge disappointment.
Also the 3d terrain is super gimmicky - I'm not talking just about the HeroQuest furniture, but about the cardboard-slot platforms that looked very wobbly during the twitch stream (and will undoubtedly add to setup/teardown time). I will say that I thought the addition of underlays for water and lava is a pretty cool idea. I liked that aspect of it. I think the card-flipping is a cool mechanic, too.
I'm lukewarm on the app - I assumed it was a foregone conclusion and had prepared myself for that. Only time will tell if app-driven board games will still be relevant and playable after 10 years (Imagine if you could only enjoy a game of HeroQuest by playing a VHS tape. 'The best part of HeroQuest is the VCRrrrrrr!!')
All said, I had been super hyped about this since it was first teased and the reveal with the poor character/tile art and general tile design really deflated that hype. By the time I saw the $175 price tag I just laughed....
That will teach me to get excited about a FFG product in the future.

I hate to start a new forum for a new game with a negative, but this is going to be a hard pass for me, at least for the time being. They didn’t even finish 2E. I’m also not a fan of the artwork, and the characters aren’t even the same.
i don’t know. I’m sure someone is excited about this, but at that price tag I’m just wishing more of those resources would have been put into 2E.

The new 3D cardboard terrain is cute, I really like that. Better miniatures, hopefully in scale with Runewars, that's good. I didn't really notice the floor tiles at first, they don't wow, I suppose, maybe they'll look better in real life. The artwork is different, but I've been around long enough to know that everybody hates new styles of artwork when they see them the first time because they're different. I doubt this new style will stick around in future Terrinoth games, I think Descent 2nd was fine to stick with for this universe, but we'll see.
I'm just not sure about an app based game. I want to see it in action and reviewed several times before I'll have any faith that I will actually enjoy it. I get the pure co-op, that's what's popular, and the campaign based play, this is their Gloomhaven competitor, but I just haven't seen an app-based FFG game that really appeals to me.
Also I hope they're not planning on pricing this over $100. It would be uncompetitive at anything much above that.
EDIT: $175? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA! Never mind. This is a non-starter for me.

frankelee got a reaction from jbudd in New Descent product teased
On MSRP, I saw some people on other threads thinking maybe $200 (maybe $300!) too, but it got me thinking are there really any non-Kickstarter, non-GW board game products hitting game store shelves at $200+? However big they make the box (looks about like a coffin box cut in half and stacked up, so not bigger than other boxes we've seen before) I don't know how much any company wants to push costs right now when games like Frosthaven are on KS for $100. I know Twilight Imperium is $150, but I don't know that it makes a lot of sense to push this beyond $125.

frankelee got a reaction from twincast in New Descent product teased
I definitely get the mark it up to mark it down strategy, and it's a good point. But like I said you don't see many non-KS products with an MSRP as high as $160, and KS games just operate by completely different rules, they rarely have much market after crowdfunding and doubly so at FLGS where the severe discounts aren't as common. Not to mention with MAP, pre-order sales, and all that, it's risking disaster tempting the majority of your audience to NOT buy your product until Amazon can mark it down at a steep discount months, or even over a year later. But I'm just speculating of course, thanks for the input!

Yeah that's why Runebound and Runewars failed.
