maxam reacted to Darth Meanie in 2.0 is kind of a mess
Yeah, I guess I'm going to be even more finicky than that.
I think 2.0 has some great new ideas, a unified theme of abilities across all ships, and some of the favored fixes.
But if it remains a game of 60 minute beat-down, I'll be bored after about 5 games, just like 1.0.
I need this game to feature narrative. Unfortunately, while having 7 factions is cool, I'm very afraid filling in those rosters means that Epic and missions are so back burner as to be dead.
And if I have to invent my own narrative, I don't need 2.0 to do it. Or, at least, I am free to dabble only, without giving FFG gobs of money to convert.

maxam reacted to TasteTheRainbow in 2.0 is kind of a mess
2.0 was never going to be perfect. It was not created to address imperfection in 1.0. It was created to address systematic and ingrained problems with 1.0, and it accomplished that goal quite well. This ridiculous notion that finding a flaw somehow means this whole 2.0 thing was a waste of time has got to go. It reminds me of people who claim the flu vaccine doesn’t work because SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE still get the flu. The world isn’t either/or. Projects aren’t either/or.
If Riot games, who spends millions and millions on playtesting and balance of a digital game can get stuff wrong, then so can FFG with their infinitely-smaller budget. Whining every time they do is not useful. Claiming that this somehow means 2.0 is a MESS is worse than useless. It’s laughable, except apparently some of you think it’s a serious point of discussion.
Abilities need to be on the card because you or your opponent might need to read them during a game. You don’t need to know points or upgrades once the game is started except to calculate points, which is going to be on your tourney sheet or in the app.

Idk, a lot of the problems in 1.0 were very much due to their inability to go back and fix fundamentally broken mechanics (turrets)
Plus all the things we couldn't do without the new bases (bullseye arcs, the half-line that marks the fore and aft, all the clearly defined quadrants for turrets and aux arcs etc.) and the massive balance overhaul of literally every ship and upgrade, whether directly or indirectly through the nerfing of problem mechanics (TIEs vs Reinforce)
I don't doubt we're going to get new problems, but the "disease" as defined here is a collective of human beings. Human beings have the curious capacity to learn from and fix their mistakes, only now we have a theoretically effective template with which to address future issues.
Cautiously optimistic ?

maxam reacted to Parakitor in Well, I guess I changed my avatar
I was looking through avatars the other day because I want a Terrinoth avatar. I didn't find one I liked, so I waited. Today I decided to look again, and accidentally picked one, and I'll never get my TIE interceptor back. It's okay, the Carrion Lancer isn't bad. But what I really want for an avatar is this dude:
Yep, love me some necromancy in my Runewars!
How 'bout you? Is there an avatar that you'd really like that isn't available yet?
EDIT: Yes, there is this Necromancer, but wasn't sure about him. I think I'm changing it now.

To be fair to FFG, it would be insane of them to answer individual fan questions about future releases. If it came out that FFG would drop news about coming releases to fans e-mailing them, they would be flooded with questions.

I can almost hear the anguished cries of @Budgernaut as yet another non-Scorpion-Lady hero is announced... but not too much because this guy is awesome!

maxam got a reaction from Parakitor in Advice for demo-ing and building a community
It may look boring on the table, but I find that teaching someone the game through a demo battle works really well if it is a mirror match with identical forces with no upgrades.
Not only do you avoid the classic 100pt demo issue of "yeah they stomped you there, but in a full game you could equip x upgrade", but the new player also gets to grok what the other player can do as they have the same dials.

maxam reacted to Hepitude in Latari hero and regular unit announced
Has anyone weighed in on Faolan's ability to replace 1 speed-3 march with 3 speed-1 marches? Is that just to increase the range? Or is there added utility that I'm missing? It seems like a very strange ability to me.
EDIT: Figuring things out.
I just realized his first ability applies to this. He can march 180 degrees and then charge! That's AWESOME!

Good point. I still forget about Darnati sometimes...BECAUSE THEY'RE STILL ON THE BOAT! It's killing me, man. I'm trying to be patient for my Wraiths, but I just want them now! Oh, there I go bringing Waiqar into a Latari discussion. For shame. ?

I'm thinking the key is figure upgrades. None of the Infantry Command Pack upgrades work for the Ventala, but if you don't want those upgrades anyway, I'd pick the Ventala for sure! (Maybe that's just because they're new).

Shoot, as a non-Latari player this is exciting! Every time something new comes out for this game, it's harder to stick to one faction. Such cool stuff!

maxam reacted to TauntaunScout in How is this game for the casual player?
Given time, people can break any miniatures game and/or be willing to spend any amount of money to win games. Whether or not this happens in pickup Legion games at your local stores is up to the locals to choose not to do that. Eventually, in post-2000 AD gaming, this will happen to all games. Combinations of certain special characters, using 12 of some weird random support unit, or whatever, will eventually create a horribly imbalanced game. The way I've found to avoid this is to only play with fully painted and based models, and to insist your opponent do the same. It takes the wind outof the casual power-gamers sails. Big convention tournaments are something else but for day to day playing, painted armies are the best hedge against power gaming.

So...
Is anyone going to mention that "Unhallowed Wind" makes a great euphemism for crop dusting the game table?

maxam reacted to Tvayumat in The Future of Runewars
Runewars began in an interesting place. Well saturated market full of shiny new kickstsrters every other month with glitzy IPs and shiny coats of paint.
Gamers are easily swayed by these things at first, and these days tend to jump on the shiniest bandwagon.
Few games are in it for the long haul, but I think RWM really is. Investing in their in house IP gives FFG a lot of wiggle room for production, margins, and design.
The fact is that a lot of people don't know much or care much about the Terrinoth setting, and so we lose the "OMG TAKE ALL MY MONEY" reactions, but this isn't a weakness imo, rather a strength. There is less pressure to come out of the gate surging, and more room to build an actually well considered system.
RWM is a FANTASTICALLY realized game from concept to execution with few mechanical weaknesses. It's unique, fun, fast, competitive, and surprisingly deep on a way that many games pretend to be but fall short of.
Players who aren't wowed by the setting are usually floored by the gameplay once they start setting dials and watch a turn play out, the gears in their heads immediately turning over what they could have done better and what they'll try next time.
Recently we've seen this momentum starting to build, and I suspect that FFG has a lot more content up their sleeves to release long before they lose steam.
I'm in it for the long haul, gents, and I think if you watch this space over the coming months to years, you'll really see that momentum building.

I predict that we will soon see a poison or bleeding condition and it will counter vitality by dealing an additional wound when the affected unit receives a wound. I'm not sure I agree with that design, but that is where I think the Uthuk are headed next.

Runelord on a RuneCow surrounded by RuneGolems. Its going down. Love this guy.
-
maxam reacted to Glucose98 in Baron Zachareth
So you hand vitality to your Rune Golems and a vitality to *THIS* guy so he can actually survive long enough to juice them up? Going to be interesting to see if the timing actually affords that or not (since accuracy allows you to spend a wound right?) And one damage is pretty easy to come by.
