My bad. Made the post in a hurry to lunch and I dont think well in an empty stomach. I meant Armada and the "negative" thing about that is that it will make one to buy several items of the same to be competitive.

I mean that's how most miniature games work though. At least they are making you not have to buy other factions you will never use for a few upgrade cards.  But also it is to early to see what will be competitive.

  2. Privateer started doing that with the new sets since MK3 but I believe those are also just they same plastic with dye added, though maybe they are using different sculpts now too, idk since I have not purchased anything new since before MK3, also the LGS i used to play warmachine at went out of business so I have no where to play. :( BUT the LGS I play destiny at is basically turning into a FFG store so that is exciting for IA and RW :)

My question would then be : will they "base-coat" them or not ? I mean, like in Battlelore where some are blue, others red and the last ones purple ? or will it be like Warhammer, fully grey ? I've got stuffs to paint minis but I'm more interested in the game aspect than on the painting aspect of this product...

Not sure if they will go the route of using different color plastics for the different factions or not...I would say uniform grey would be the best choice for the hobby community as it would be easily concealed even by lighters primers

I still don't understand people complaining about this not being pre-painted. If you want to pay a ton extra for pre-painted, take it to someone who paints minis. You will spend less than you would if FFG painted it, it will look better, and the people who want to paint thier own don't have to spend so much. It's the definition of a win/win situation.

I think we are going to see a lot of this with RuneWars though.  Unfortunately people are going to be comparing this to the other miniature games FFG has which are painted without taking into account the paint on the x-wing and armada figures are $15-$50 for maybe $.50-$2 of materials.  If they applied that model to a unit of say 4 cavalry with the paint job of the infantry soldier then these things would be like $100 a unit, or as I said before, look like crappy clix figs or similar minis.

I have the same dilemma. It may end up being cheaper to get two core sets to fill out the infantry, dice pool and movement templates followed by buying the seperate blister packs for the upgrade units (musician, leader, hero). However, I'd hate to have duplicate heroes. I suppose I could always donate them to a friend that enjoys painting but I'd rather do the blister packs if it is feasible.

I'm also interested in the pricing as well because I'd like to give myself and my opponent the option of fielding a full formation of Rune Golems and Carrion Worm Lancers but not if it's going to cost hundreds of pounds. That said I got offered a new job today on double my previous salary, so I'm going to be able to go full on into this game even more so than I've done with Imperial Assault where I've bought 1-2 of each blister and a single copy of the boxed expansions.

Congrats on the new Job Muz.  I haven't hit IA that hard since I have only ever played campaign though I think some people are about to force skirmishes on me...

If only it was prepainted I would be all in.

Pre-painted miniature games of this magnitude would either look like crap like mageknight, heroclix or they old Star wars game.  Or be priced so astronomically ridiculous that they would not have a following.  Also it would really affect the hobby side of the tabletop gaming community.

It would be an odd choice to have people buy a copy of a unique character they already have, so I wonder if there's going to be some spin on this. Because we're dealing with sprues (no, I haven't actually seen how they will turn out yet), perhaps they will have alternative poses, weapons, or even the ability to produce a different hero? Or we might not get a reissue of that hero.

FFG has said runewars will not be on sprue but will be similar to imperial assault.  Though it could be like Captain Terro and the different bodies to create the dewback riders.  Until all the components are revealed and I see if there is any way to use the heroes as other things, maybe there will be generic version of Dari or whats his face skeleton guy =P, I'm not willing to commit to a second core box.  My LGS owner is sad about that also lol...not really...

My Impression was that they had no plans to produce 3D terrain to sell, but I don't remember the exact wording.

With all the companies making 3d terrain I feel like they don't NEED to make their own terrain, once the game is out and the templates are out I'm willing to bet companies are going to jump on making matching 3d terrain corresponding to the released templates.  and also this will work well since once you hit a piece of terrain you can just remove the 3d for the template for ease of movement.  Just my opinion though since i remember getting annoyed at navigating building and forests in WHF.

I read in another thread they (meaning FFG) are not great at continued support of a game, so that worries me and gives me pause.

Yeah X-wing and Imperial Assault (the only other games of FFG I keep up with) are regularly expanded to around 3-4 wave launch per year, with usually at least one new unit per faction within each game.  Armada is a bit of a slower release but that is because of the scale more than anything, there are only so many capital type ships in the SWU and since FFG is now going only canon they are now limited from using SWEU now Legends.  Then there is there LCG scene, and shut up about Conquest (great game btw) because there is nothing in FFG's power to continue that since GW pulled the license, which are regularly updated every month or two with a new pack or expansion.  From how I see it compared to other companies, such as GW who only now seems to release resculpts or boxes of models that are like a quarter of an army, or PP who makes my still favorite miniature game but is notorious for teasing a model giving rules then not releasing them for two years (Khador man'o'war bombardiers or grolar jack) FFG is pretty respectable in the regards of new stuff they release for their games.

I'm anticipating large units with 2x1, 2x2 or even a 2x3 tray. Being a miniatures game not tied to small tiled maps I'm also expecting a better focus on scale.

Yeah I'm hoping they do these giant monsters or siege weaponry would be awesome to scale.  And this goes back to how streamlined the game is that they won't need to make little mini rules on the cards for things like slow or crew bonuses or anything like that because it will just be represented on the command dials.  Everyday I get more and more excited for this game.

Actually I was disappointed by this one, the objectives seem to encourage, "just kill each other"

Look at the one that's all about get flank charges, how's that not also just going to win you the game, as if you can pull off a flank charge or two, you're unlikely to lose.

It would surprise me if they don't have more tactical or control style objective also. Or they handle this like most other mini games where you have a game type and these are just like bonus objectives.  Regardless based on how many objectives came with Armada I'm sure you will not always have combat oriented objectives.

  11. Yeah I am excited to look into what kind of lists we can build to make objective vs. massacre armies...I WANT TO SEE EVERYTHING!!! Also I look forward to games that are more objective based, since most games I've played have objectives but they always just seem to fall to the wayside to massacre.

  12. Also the varying initiative is a key factor to this, if you want to do something make sure you are doing low initiative actions, of course you won't always be able to however most of the dials have two forms of move and combat where one is fast and doesn't have AS much of punch and one that is slow but has a slew of modifiers to make the attack truly crippling.
