  1. @Diogo Salazar the GURPS mass battle system is literally why I have that "almost" in there xD Although it was fairly complex, it did what it was supposed to and well. Much like a lot of GURPS, it requires investment but ends up being one of the most robust and well-written systems.

And yes, I'd love a minis game for L5R that was something like what Imperial Assault or X-Wing are. Frankly, minis games used to be way overly complicated and what FFG seems to have pulled off in simplifying them and making them more accessible is, to me, nothing short of revolutionary, and if I could get Clan Wars FFG, I'd immediately snap all of it up.

  2. Yeah, but balance is something you can always tweak and tweak endlessly. The skill list needed paring down, I think, but that on its own is hardly worth a new edition. I honestly doubt you could "fix" the Raise system as it was. I think the Opportunities as we have them now are the proper evolution of that.

Mass battle is apparently something almost every system seems to struggle with, for some reason. That could've taken another supplement, I think, to actually flesh out different army types and stuff. Sadly, the new edition also seems to struggle with it, though I heard good stuff about Kakita Kaori's homebrew system.

What do you mean by better technique integration?

  3. You misunderstood me. I'm saying there's no stealth skill in 5e and so there's no way to use the stealth skill with an invocation to cast stealthily. That is entirely a 4e thing. An NPC can do whatever, anyway, but this is for PCs.

Instead, I'd allow an opportunity spend to do so. Probably tied to the air ring, allowing Soshi to raise the limit on their school ability (so they fool people with higher vigilance than normal) and allowing non-Soshi to approximate the Soshi technique (but not as well).

  4. I mean, you can homebrew it, if you want to. Look at old lore to see what rings and skills make sense for the clan and families, making sure that you give the same equivalent options as for existing clans.
Come up with (a) school(s), for them to pick.

Honestly though, ask yourself and them what the narrative of this should be. Why is there a Spider clan? Are they Tainted and evil, like last time? Why are they tolerated? What does it add to your game?
If you got good answers for that, which fit the game you want, then you need to go to the efforts mentioned before but probably have a better idea of what the clan and school should look like.

Personally, I would recommend to not do it, if at all avoidable, but that's just me.

  5. We've had some extended discussions on the Discord about it, too. We've currently found the following niches for it:

If you are a bushi or shinobi who isn't focusing on iaijutsu dueling, you can learn one tech which can sorta take the place of two other techs. It's worse at it than either one, but it can fill both niches.
It also can threaten high damage and a high severity crit, potentially forcing your opponent to spend a Void Point to just take a weaker crit.

It's also okay in cases where your opponent already has some fatigue, like a battlefield clash.

  6. Oh and the character doesn't "create" the terrain, it was always there, but you only notice now and position yourself accordingly...

Like many narrative options, this "creates" things in cooperation with the GM. Sometimes, not all options make sense, but you can often come up with something. The gardener cut down creeping vines from the castle wall, but hasn't removed them yet et voilà, Entangling terrain inside a normally wide open courtyard. Oh, the way the sun is shining and creating shadows means that this patch creates confusing contrasts - Obscuring terrain. Etc.

  7. Yes, and to implement that as a 1Opp cost opportunity for any ring in my opinion devalues Iaijutsu techs and the Water stance, which let you draw and attack on the same turn. If drawing is something that most people will do on Initiative, these options become comparatively weaker.

So I'd say, this is a 2Opp cost Water opportunity on your Initiative roll.

  8. That's by using Veiled Menace Style, by the way, on an incapacitated and (disoriented or unaware) target and spending at least three opportunities on a successful Strike.

2 Opp to Crit, 1+ Opp to Crit from VMS, and then extra Fatigue becomes a third Crit.
Since they are incapacitated, the first crit will make them Unconscious and increase the severity of crits 2 and 3 by 10.

It's not easy to achieve, but that person will be in very bad shape.

  9. Those are quotes from 4e and I'm not sure we should apply those rules to 5e, given how the Soshi school works here. Or rather, they definitely do not apply as such.

I might allow Air opportunities on the regular Theology roll for raising the TN to notice an invocation as a Soshi and something like two opportunities for a weaker version for everyone else. Maybe...

I'd say the trick to hiding that you're casting if you're not from the Soshi school is to have a distraction, so that people aren't looking at and listening to you. Hide it in a chant that is going on anyway or something like that.
