Shhh, we don't talk about those anymore 😉
As much as I loved the bonkers effects of the old tattoos, some were... Well. Bonkers.
-
On rereading, I think you're right, and it only adds Xk1, basically.
That is cool, but not as good.

Traps can work, I'm sure. I'd probably make them resist rolls, possibly with their own attack roll, if you want them to use opportunities. I could see some that cause strife on failure, f.ex.
Goblins, trolls, kappa, giant spiders and other animal spirits... Those poor creatures that got enslaved by the Lion in the old lore...

Although I've got the impression that title abilities are, by and large, considered underwhelming for their XP cost, so making one that's a bit stronger might be a good idea.
And the advisor is amazing. It's much better than just making the check themselves. Let's say they're Ring 3 Skill 3, and the person they're assisting is also Ring 3, but only Skill 1.
If the advisor rolled with assistance from the other person, they'd roll 3 ring dice, 4 skill dice and keep 4.
If the advisor assists, that becomes 3 ring dice, 4 skill dice, keep 6.

No, it doesn't. One sentence in the book suggests that you could use duel rules for any 1v1, but duels do still represent a specific situation with rising tension etc. Not every 1v1 has to be a duel, nor does that remotely make sense narratively.
Edited to add: as the book calls out in the first sentence about duels, they are "stylized engagements". They're not just a freeform 1v1. There's at least got to be the tension and staredown aspect.

Actually, @Daeglan, Nezumi, Ningyo and the one Tengu we've seen stats for in the RPG are all not Otherworldly. No stats for Naga yet, afaict, but I suspect they might be, much like Trolls, who seem to have a deeper connection to mystical powers.
-
I can see an argument for Otherworldly and Tainted, if you call it the power of the mortal realm kicking out anything from other realms. I'd make kami immune to Jade (but otherwise still otherworldly) and maybe give that ability to beings of Yomi and Tengoku too, in that case.
But it really should target Tainted.
-
That's the same thing in this edition - Tainted means having one or more of those disadvantages.
I like the idea, though I haven't thought it entirely through yet.
-
That does seem like a good start though!
I'd add a status increase like with the Emerald Magistrate and a requirement to not be tainted (duh).
As a title ability, perhaps something like a cross between witch hunter and the inquisitor's school ability?
-
The Asako Inquisitor has a school ability like that, Magnus. And technically there's Lord Shiba's Valor for the Phoenix-only tech.

The thing is that even wanting to support my FLGS, FFG made that hard. I know I'm not the only one who basically cannot get physical product through my local stores, since they have a hard time ordering it.
The most reliable way to get it for me is going direct to FFG. (and paying outrageous shipping) So this delay is just a pain and doesn't help anyone at all in the first place.Magnus Grendel and UnitOmega reacted to this -

I mean, you can pretend all you want, but I stuck to factual statements about these bloggers. They are fascist asshats and not reliable news sources. That's what I'm calling out - you're spreading misinformation based on unreliable sources.
You can also pretend that "the media" isn't reporting on any of the topics you've mentioned - that doesn't make it true, however. All of them get reported by actual, reliable news sources.
And I've looked up what's actually happening. Patreon will have to deal with arbitration, which they tried to avoid. Big whoop, the claims are still baseless and arbitration will go in their favor. The fearmongering is based on the arbitration going maximally against Patreon in every case - which is not gonna happen. Big surprise, the fascist asshats were lying and fearmongering based on their biased worldview.

I don't know or care about his past, but right now, he's repeating the talking points of Cernovich, TheQuartering and a bunch of other fascist asshats. Whatever he used to be or do, he's running with a different crowd now.
If Patreon were actually in trouble, that would make the news, as it has before - the site is relevant enough to at least tech news.Suzume Chikahisa reacted to this -
Given that literally the only sources I can find about this are untrustworthy extreme-right conspiracy bloggers, I wouldn't worry about it too much.
They keep crowing about their victories in the "culture war" all the time and yet they never seem to actually achieve anything, thankfully.
Suzume Chikahisa reacted to this -
Yes, ish. It's stated that minions shouldn't use their opportunities for anything else, but even for adversaries the advice is to mostly use it on their abilities and when dramatically appropriate. That when you have to think about it for more than a few seconds, you should just let them go unspent.
As for dangerous terrain, yes, that specifies physical damage, but I view it like techniques which specify physical damage and use your weapon. If you're using Katana of Fire, those will also deal Supernatural damage, because the KoF overrides that. So Dangerous terrain because it's filled with a supernatural fire deals Supernatural damage in my game, too, while Dangerous terrain that is on fire after someone set it on fire (with an invocation or something else) will do Physical damage.
But either way, you're certainly largely right. Tiny Fire Kami are surprisingly scary, even if it "only" would be 9 or 11 strife and 3 or 5 fatigue. That's gonna put a lot of characters right into compromised and really really close to incapacitated, either way.Magnus Grendel reacted to this -
The tiny fire kami is scary, but should be a little bit less scary if run by the book.
1. shouldn't happen - the books suggest that spending opportunity on things not on their profile should be rare for NPCs.
3. should be reduced by armor, arguably to 0 due to its supernatural nature and her wearing sanctified robes. To 2 if you treat it as physical.
4. should be 1, not 2 extra strife - this is explicitly one of the exceptions where you round down.
So three less strife than you calculated and 1-3 less fatigue.
That's still seriously scary, but slightly less so.
UnitOmega and Magnus Grendel reacted to this -
I did double check now and you're right about that.
However, I'm pretty sure that the rarity increase for a pattern only applies to buying and requisitioning in, not to crafting.
The intro paragraph specifically mentions first crafting it and then, as "the other method" buying it, which doesn't increase the price, but the rarity. It doesn't mention that for crafting at all.
So you're still looking at unmodded TN 7 for a patterned katana, and forges will bring that down to 4-5. Get yourself an assistant or two, acquire materials and use that check to possibly reduce the TN further and that seems doable.
-
I'm pretty sure you're missing a bunch of TN reductions there, and while I've found the rules to be very barebones and poor for creating multiples, they seemed to work for other stuff, at least on reading.
Don't forget that rarity is affected by where you are etc. So in a bigger city you also get TN reduced, not just from the facilities.
I'm about to go to bed, so I can't look up the specifics, but I seem to remember it working out fine.

He compared it to Air. It's making Earth stance weaker than other stances, not just weaker than it was before.

Taoist Blade Question
in Rules Questions
Posted
Yes.
No. It's written a bit confusingly, but the target you pick on activation is only for the Burst effect. The target in the description of the Enhancement effect is the target of your later Attack checks.
It stays active. It only needs the right stance for activation.
What do you mean? The Taoist Blade is one of the leanest, meanest killing machines in a skirmish, if you build it that way. That's not necessarily how they should be played, flavour-wise. However, the lack of shūji hurts badly. Both in social situations and in fights, shūji give you some very powerful and versatile tools, that the Taoist Blade lacks.
