  1. Thank you all for your replies, most helpful and encouraging. I can see that the hide/quest strategy may not be best for this scenario, but I will stick with it for now. I am going to redo the deck following some of the ideas you have provided. I will certainly look at reducing the expensive Lore cards and swapping out Denhere for Glorfindel or Beravor. As well as the basic set I have The Hunt for Gollum and Conflict at Carrock, so Burning Brand will be in there! I will let you know how I get on! Again thanks for the tips and the encouragement.
  2. I love the concept of this card game, but I cannot get the actual play sorted out! I am simply trying to do the first scenario (Passage through Mirkwood) solo. I have constructed a deck (see below) which I thought might work on a stealth strategy. It is Lore and Spirit. Having made a number of attempts I do not seem to be setting anywhere. There are a number of enemies with a low threat level and I either get swamped by these or the shadow effects devastate things. There never seems to be enough resources, even with Song of Wisdom in play. I am sure that there are lots of cards that would be better than the ones I have chosen, but this is a level 1 scenario so I am left to ponder.... Is the deck I have constructed really useless or am I playing the game really badly. My question, if anyone has time to have a look is .............. . Is my deck a sensible one that should be able to beat this scenario? If it is then I know I need to work on my play skills, if it is just a no hoper deck then I can work on my deck building. A bit of advise woyld help me stop banging my head against a brick wall. 3. Sorry for such a dumb question, but I have (so called) read the rule book twice and cannot see that there is a limit to the number of cards you can have in your hand. Is there? Phil
  4. I have been searching the site, but I cannot find the Quest log. Where is it??
  5. I only seem to have two quest cards for this mission. Is that correct?
  6. With this card what happens if the Questing is not successful? Does the card remain in play or go to discard? Seems a very cheap way of getting an ally into play if he stays there. Thanks Philip
  7. Aghhhh I have just tried my deck and I ALMOST made it!! Gandalf turned up twice to help kill the Troll without needing the Forest Snare, lots of allies in place (most 2's), but in the end there was still to much build up once the encounter deck started drawing two cards. Still I know I missed as few tricks so I'll give it another go before crying out for help!! Many thanks for the comments though, all useful food for thought for next time! Phil
  8. I have Khazad Dum and the Dwarrodelf packs.
  9. Yet again I am trying to beat this quest! This time I am using Dunhere (attacker), Eowyn (Quester) and Bifur (for defense and also because he allows me to switch resources for greater flexibility) I have a lovely low starting threat of 24, and am planing to use the Forest snare on the troll and of course Galadhrims Greeting to keep the threat low. Gandalf will be needed to kill him off, but with Lore I hope to get the card draw. I have also brought in Bofur as he seems a cheap way to Quest and not a bad chomp blocker. Unexpected Courage, Self Preservation, Secret Paths are all in there as well. I have Northern Tracker and Lorien Guide to try and get enough allies for the final ambush. Does it sound like a feasible plan? Thanks Phil
  10. I was using Dunhere,Eowyn and Thalin. Other combinations seemed to give to high a start threat Dunhere's ability is great, but many of the enemies have to strong a defense for his three attack. Thalin is good for defense but then you loose his ability if you don't quest. Eowyn is quest, quest , quest!!! I was drawing a lot of enemies from the encounter deck, so maybe I was a bit unlucky. I played Gandalf to damage the troll but used up a lot of resources to do it. I think your comment about Tactics in the core deck is spot on. I have no problem with using the spirit cards, but with two spirit heroes I have to have almost half the deck of Tactic cards. I guess the two do not complement each over very well at that sort of ratio. I'm pretty sure I shall be back to leadership with either spirit or Lore (i'll try both of course, but I must say I like the Lore cards!) Phil
  11. I have just tried a Tactics and Spirit deck from the core set (for journey down the anduin, solo). I found real problems with getting enough resources to play some of the decent cards in my hand and can't really see a way around it. Threats come out of the encounter deck so rapidly that you have to respond, spending resources on so-so cards. If you don't the Troll just comes out and beats you up (unless you have been really lucky with the start hand. ( I was using Dunhere,Eowyn and Thalin. Other combinations seemed to give to high a start threat) My question really is two fold. 1. What is the general opinion about this combination with the core deck (played solo)? Anyone agree or can point out the error of my ways. 2. I am definitely improving in my understanding and playing of the game but I am finding using only the core deck quit frustrating. You cannot go single theme and trying to go two themed has a natural imbalance. I have Khaza dum on order and am looking forward to receiving it. Is there any issue with using those cards for the Core set scenarios? Is it "cheating"? Thanks for your time Philip
  12. Great thanks. Still didn't quite manage to get through though! Going to try a Tactics/Spirit deck for a change next. Phil
  13. I have just had the situation in Journey down the Anduin where I had sufficient tokens on the first quest card, but had not defeated the Troll. By the time I had defeated the Troll I had a location in the Travel area on which I did not have all of the required travel tokens. So I had all of the travel tokens on the quest, had defeated the troll, but was short of tokens on the currently active quest. When do I consider the quest completed? Immediately or only after I have all of the location tokens. Thanks Phil
  14. It seems to me that with this game there are no magic formulas you can learn, especially with just the core set. Every game turns out to be different in some way and while knowing a few good combo's is great you can never guarantee these and you need to be able to make the best of what is presented. I like to try the scenarios with a deck of my own construction, but it is also nice to “talk” to others about different approaches and so speed up the learning curve. For example the advice about needing to concentrate on Questing in the solo play was great. I would probably have got there on my own, but a LOT later and I can only take so much frustration! It also gives ideas that you may not have thought of yourself. Like most games/hobbies it is great to have others to “talk” to and discuss with. I haven’t looked for local players yet, but after a bit more experience I am sure I will. I hope to try Anduin tonight with my deck. Not hopeful about that Troll, but we’ll see! Phil
