TheBoulder reacted to RustamShamshiri in Encumbrance Capacity...
    uhm, sorry for the delay.
Well, okay, my take on it.  Like Silhouette, Encumbrance is volumetric scalar of volume and/or mass.  It can represent either size or weight or both of an object.
So, an example, a Silhouette 2 standard pickup truck with an Encumbrance of 8 might be able to carry/hold 8 Silhouette 1 things or possibly 8 75-100 kilogram things.  A standard half-ton Ford pickup is rated with driver and passengers to carry about ~1,200 lbs (~0.5 metric tons) without strain.
Mostly, it seems the creators/designers leave it up to the GM and players to use the examples provided to come up with their own mutually agreed upon common sense rules-of-thumb when dealing with it.
    (Associated ideas: Cumbersome, Unwieldy)

Yes I have that. It does not explain what it is.

I don't own any of the art, so I'd have to remove it all.  Beyond that, not much.  First setting I've ever written though, didn't think it would be good enough.

I made a low fantasy setting for my group just to mess around in.  Thought I'd put it up in case anyone would like to use it or parts of it.

My main goal was to provide a setting that made sense and sidestepped the 'exuberance' of settings like FR, so your comments mean a lot!  Thank you.

Thanks again for the time spent to answer and develop your vision.
From my experience, i' gming with "old D&D players" and they liked pretty much Genesys system but i could see there were not familiar with the narrative side and we were not using the full potential of this system. Especially with the wizard ! He had like a lack of imagination because the spells were not written in advance as some other rpg.
For me, i like very much Genesys but i 've found a bit long sometimes to find the balanced result with the threats and advantages. probably i 've not enought experience.
I didn't like the initiative system and i converted it to a more D&D way.
Next, we played in Terrinoth setting but i've found not enought background details so i'm using Midgard now ....  and D&D5E !
However i'm very interested to buy and play Coriolis but i though Genesys could be great (no magic in Coriolis - just some psychic powers i've read) and that's why your work and point of view is very useful.
    Thank you again

Just finished reading... I seriously love it. The history and cultures feel so grounded and it has a distinct flavour that resonates with me.
I can't stand general fantasy settings like Forgotten Realms and the like. This however just draws me in. I love how the fantasy elements enhances the flavour of setting, rather than drown it in yet another rehash of tired tropes.
This is fantastic. I can't say it enough -  It is flavourful. Thank you for sharing.

My reason for converting it wasn't really due to a comparison of systems.  I had been GMing star wars for a few years and really enjoyed the system.  My players didn't want to learn a new system and one of them had bought the genesys book and I wanted to encourage his interest, so I made the conversion based on those factors.  I'd hesitate to ever do an objective comparison of rpg rules systems, simply because I don't think it can be objective.  What your group enjoys is the best system for you.
Maybe that's not super helpful, so I can tell you why I love the genesys system...  It strikes a great balance between crunch and narrative play, and the mechanics help to inform roleplaying and encourage imagination.  The narrative dice roll encourages my players to be active participants in a story versus a mechanical encounter.  I also find everyone at the table is interested in everyone else's rolls in a way I haven't experienced in other systems.  For combat, I love the initiative system and the encounters are fast and emphasize the action.
Areas of weakness...  there aren't many, but I don't love how the magic system leaves so much up to player initiative, some of the skills are perhaps a little too specific at times (to the point where they don't get used) and character creation doesn't always tie the players to the setting (this is mitigated somewhat by things like the favour mechanic and is always going to be a problem in a generic system).

What you're looking for is found in Star Wars. Where you chose a Career, and got 8 Career Skills, which you picked 4 from to gain 1 rank, and then a Specialization within that Career, that granted 4 Career Skills (almost always with some overlap), and you chose 2 of them to gain a rank in.
But then again, Star Wars had the talent Tress that helped differentiate a solid path for each Specialization, and you could buy more of them.
This is what I did in my L5R conversion, because it felt right for the flavor of the setting.

I sympathize, TheBoulder. One idea might be to adopt a system of Signature Abilities (like those in Star Wars) that are tied to Careers. In Star Wars, you can't access these until you've reached the bottom of your Talent Tree, so in Genesys terms, that would mean getting to at least one Tier-5 Talent. That said, I can see designing some Signature Abilities that act kind of like Heroic Abilities in Terrinoth, improving at set XP benchmarks.

In terms of crowdfunding, DriveThruRPG already has an entire system in place for fulfilling Kickstarter/ect campaigns. I'm sure something could be worked out where they are still the exclusive distributor of the end product. The corporate 'cut' would be factored into the campaign (probably as 'licencing fees'), the 'at cost' price would be the creator setting their own cut to $0 for orders placed via crowdfunding. What about using Patreon to generate a general slush fund to pay editors/artists, but not explicitly for any particular project?

Yeah, minions are designed for ease of use, not realism! Your game won't break if you use more rivals and no minions.

Perhaps my solution is not to use minions as they serve a certain "cinematic" purpose that doesn't conform to realism in the first place.  If that's the type of game I want to run...

    Thanks for your reply!

That is your prerogative, yes. But the mechanics don't agree. Remember that each minion group is one target: "When characters attack a group, they attack the group as a whole, not an individual" (CRB132).
If you have, say, three rivals in the scene you can only shoot one of them. It can still be a triple-pull of the trigger or the old one-two-punch, but that's still one combat check against that one rival. And only one hit on a success. If you had an Auto-Fire weapon then you could hit one, two or all three rivals—or hit the one rival multiple times!
It can be described in any way you want, you just don't get the mechanical benefits without the proper qualities or talents. Auto-fire allows you to get multiple hits—either one hit on several targets or several hits on one target—you can't do that without it.
Minions are designed for ease of use and to let your players be action heroes that kick, flip, punch, roundhouse and take out a smattering of no-name mooks.
This was discussed a while back when someone said "since there is a talent called Dodge I can't describe my character as dodging an attack‽‽‽" Which is, of course, not true. You can narrate however you want (within reason, you can't just narrate dodging an attack and having it hit the big bad who is several miles away in a reinforced bunker!) without the mechanical benefits of the named talents/qualities.

Every time a minion's WT is exceed done minion is taken out. If an attack causes 2 minions worth of wounds, 2 minions are gone. That's what minions are: easily dispatched foes. They fall very quickly.
And it's not breaking the narrative; remember that a round is "roughly a minute", but not exact. Each combat check represents your best opportunity in that round to cause harm. It's not always one combat check = one pull of the trigger/one swing.
it could be a flurry of blows or a few quick pulls of the trigger. Auto-fire, Whirlwind and the like are just better at taking down multiple foes. Indeed, they can get two different targets whereas a normal attack can only hit one. Each minion group is considered one target, which is why you feel plow through them without Auto-Fire weapons.

IF the players decide to pull a siege I think this vide would be of interest. It's about European medieval sieges but many of the points still apply

Okey, with cannons and mortars I can see that happen. I originally thought they only had the classic Rokuga siege engines available.

But is that really honourable? And don't that go against some od the ideas of Compassion

Cannons, mortars, those cart-mounted rocket launchers, and the funky one-shot missiles from Disney's Mulan. I believe these are not available in this situation, that's why I said "burn it" instead of "flatten it" .
"We don't mess around" is more likely. Extra points if the PCs don't even try to negotiate, just line up some archers (at dusk, for a more dramatic display) then start raining incendiary arrows at the place and turn it into a funeral pyre for the bandits. Since the castle has a moat, the town should be safe from the fire. The keep is not a huge deal anyway, destroying then rebuilding it can be a kind of symbolic gesture.

Well, if their complaint is "there has been no stability in this province and the governor was inept" the response "we're a new, imperially sanctioned clan who are taking sole and specific responsibility for the wellbeing of this region and have imperial protection so can tell the major clans to bugger off, and we have orders for the inept governor to kill himself" should play pretty darn well with the citizens and more honourably minded of the Ronin, "we have money, we want an army to enforce law and order" should appeal to the more disciplined mercenaries....and, as @Nheko says, the drunkards who aren't in a shape to defend themselves effectively don't really matter....
Presumably either many, many artilleries or a deeply annoyed shujenga.

Ultimately, you want to avoid storming the castle, or if you must, hit them whilst they're incapable of fighting effectively. Even low quality troops can hold a fortified position against similar numbers of soldiers, and you're looking at superior numbers in that fort by almost 2-1.  Yes, you have armoured samurai too, but if you get your ashigaru butchered, that's your main instrument for quelling the disturbance in the province lost.
If they know the tunnel is there, that should even the score - if the ashigaru can get inside where the fortifications don't count, then 2-1 against a rabble of peasants isn't too bad. Depends what they need to do to find it.
The river wall is a good option, but even a badly damaged wall is still a defensive position and moving two dozen troops is hard to do quietly. The PCs could theoretically break in by themselves and sneak or fight their way to the gates, though.
Siege is also a good idea if you know what the stores are like inside. 40 men will eat through available resources in the castle faster than 20 men will eat the stores of the town. The other problem is that there are 3 gates, so securing all of them means in theory no more than 6-7 ashigaru and 2 samurai protecting each - if the defenders get desperate holding off 40 men with less than 10 is a big ask.

It's a good idea but I was planning on him being a "villain" to deal with later. Once they secure the castle, the first snow will fall and start to impede travel. During the winter they will be dealing with criminal elements in the city (and an escaped governor turned to maho).

I think the keywords here are: “they are set to govern”.
Without knowing what Clan are they playing I will say go with the options that will cause less damages to the structure, because then I have to go back to the Daimyo to ask for more koku to repair or rebuilt something that not only I could prevent, money that could be used for something else: improving the quality of life of the province, improving defenses, a celebration to improve the morale of the local residents and improve the image of your Daimyo, etc...
So my first option will be how the peasants feel about the Ronin leadership.
If they govern with justice and fairness, I’ll try to negotiate their surrender with an opportunity to become low level retainers and then assign them an appropriate appointment (obviously under the scrutiny of the players).
If they were ruthless and abusive I will lead a siege around the keep, wait until surrender and take them down.
