  1. I think it's likely that we'll see a TIE Scout eventually. I also trust FFG to take the best elements of its depiction. My preference (as with the Defender) lean toward the Decipher CCG version. I'd love a TIE Vanguard or TIE/gt eventually as well.

I think the 24m figure was almost certainly a translation error. It was obviously designed to resemble the TIE Advanced so I expect the model to be sized similarly.

The Tie Scout feels like the Tie Crawler, just make a tie out of everything because the designers/artists have no imagination. I'm really glad we didn't get that. It's the kind of design you get when there's no quality oversight.

I don't think "no imagination" is accurate. Generally people with "no imagination" don't get into design/art careers [designer/artist here—can confirm].

It might seem unimaginitive at times, but I think it's more likely they were trying to tap resonant associations, for one. Are there better ways to do that? Maybe.

But more importantly, you're also looking at a series of craft that are meant to be mass-produced, likely millions or billions of units, and [this is something often overlooked] totally modular.

The Rebels will scrape together whatever they can get. As a result, they have some character and a fair amount of resources. But in no way are they an efficient force. In contrast, the military-industrial design derivation approach of the Imperial Navy is immensely practical, especially considering the logistics of a galaxy-spanning Empire. With an assembly line war machine, the TIE modules are the apex of engineering efficiency; of course they'll make a TIE out of everything. Who wouldn't?

  2. Kind of an eclectic bunch lately:

Rosetta (post-metal, although they dislike the term)

    Warpaint (indie, psychedelic)
    *shels (post-metal)
    Robyn Miller (Myst soundtrack)
    Crippled Black Phoenix (post-prog)
    Morphine (90's alt)
    Mahumodo (post-hardcore)
Nick Cave & Warren Ellis (The Assassination of Jesse James soundtrack)
    Amorphis (death metal)
Mazzy Star (dream pop, 90's alt)
    Jakob (post-rock)

I must recommend Rosetta, *shels, Crippled Black Phoenix, and Jakob and the post-metal genre on the whole. Immensely well-crafted and thoughtful stuff.

  3. The Imperial Gozanti (63.8m) is larger than the commercially-available civilian Gozanti freighter (41.8m).

    From Mel Miniatures:

    pic2338106_lg.jpg

Although the Star Wars Rebels Visual Guide lists the Imperial Version at 63.8m, some claim it should be more like 75m.

Gaming wise, it would need to be scaled at 1/270 and not the sliding scale of the GR-75 and CR90.

    This ship screams Epic.

I'm calling it, the 2nd Imperial ship will be the Imperial Gozanti.

    (Edited to fix picture)

That's what I'm talking about. I'm grateful for Mel's contributions, but the above is exactly what I'd like to see mass-produced by FFG.

I figure at 1:270 it'd be not much shorter than the transport.

  4. I don't play much. I have a tendency to lose very badly, but I always have fun no matter the outcome.

This forum is my favorite board on the Internet. Partly, it's Star Wars. Partly, it's because I do want to get better with my game. Most of all it's because of the camaraderie I see. My father suffered a stroke early last month. This forum gave me reason to smile on many a night when I was at the hospital, keeping vigil. He passed away a few days before Thanksgiving. You could say this game and reading about it has lifted my spirits more than most would believe.

Dad thought it was pretty funny, how I would pack up my minis to play "that Star Wars game" every week. He may not have understood the appeal but he appreciated how it gave me so much enjoyment.

Sitting on the shelf next to my monitor are a Rebel Aces pack, two TIE Defenders, and as of yesterday two TIE Phantoms. They are sitting there, all unopened. I've spent the past several months writing a book about being a manic-depressive. When the book is finished... and not until then... I will open the packs and add those ships to my collection. Until then they sit next to the monitor as I write. For inspiration and motivation :)

I hope I can sell my book and that it gets to be a bestseller. Then I can buy more X-Wing Miniatures stuff!

In the meantime, I hope this forum continues to give you a reason to smile when you need it.

  5. When i got my Tantive from the Black Friday sale on Coolstuff, I immediately tore it open and "flew" it around the kitchen. It didnt matter to me that i had friends over. I'm also 30 years old....

Secondly, my gf asks me at least once a week to teach her how to play. I havent because im afraid she might win.... And then ill never hear the end of it.... I cam hear it now...

"You spend hundreds of dollars on these minis and i beat you! Loser! Loser! Loser!"

(She actually calls me a loser all the time)

    Girlfriend is OP.

  6. hey guys, been working on a few things to get me painting again after a sizeable break and also thought every one could use an "awww cute" moment so let me introduce you to Jedi Padawan Kaitlyn.  She is 3 (on halloween) and LOVES to watch "space" with daddy.  on to the minis

here are a few shots of a lambda in progress. i have a lot more blending to do with the reds, so take it for what its worth.

i also have to tone down and get some mroe definition on the engines.....too much osl and way to consistent for lighting...  and on that note, this thing is much darker and richer red than the pics came out. i think the flash or the auto compensation was turned up to high on my iphone or something, because these shots make it look pink, and its more darker than that.  jsut a shade or two brigher than the imperial aces royal guard tie, its so dark.

i wanted landing lights on it.  im weird that way, but if i was a ground crew in the empire, i figure my life is already pretty much forfiet, so i would want SOMEONE to be nice to me and at least SIGNAL when they will land on me.

I added some streaking beyond what was done in the factory. i plan to do a lot of weathering to it with blast marks and scrapes (after all, its oicunns ship) but really need to figure out what else i want to do to the engines and what i want the canopy to look like...(thinking super dark red glass like effect). after i get those figured out, i need to go back and actually paint the hull....all that grey....uhhh....

was thinking of doing running lights one some of the places on the model, might be nice to get a splash of blue and green on the model, but what do you guys think?  i have added a little color to it with a different few shades of grey, but still...thats a big chunk of grey.

also, please dont judge to harshly, i have not painted anything like a ship in years. most of the stuff i paint are 'jacks and troops, so this was a huge change up.  still, nice to get back on the table and have some fun.

Excellent work, on all counts :)

  7.

Look at the art picture. Looking only at the topshot of the model will give you a completely off impression of the shape of this ship.

The 'art picture' is what gives me the small amount of hope I have regarding its scale, although that feeling is definitely mixed.

On the plus side, it absolutely makes the ship look a LOT 'fatter' (taller up-and-down) than the model initially appears, and that's good.

On the negative side...well, look at the edges of the wedge.  There are *at least* two rows of lighted windows, there, and there is no way in hell you could fit two decks along the edge of that thing at a scale that gives it a 150m length.  Unless, again, the ceiling of these decks is about 2 feet from the floor.

It's an anti fighter ship it's not designed to engage cap ships like the cr-90 is, as such it does not need the same large generators or shielding, it probably has lighter armour too so less mass to move meaning smaller engines.

It's also state of the art where the blockade runner is much older.

That may well all be true, but whether something is a 'new design' or an 'older design' doesn't change the fact that you are still putting the same size people in it.

I think that's what's killing it is the Star Destroyer-like lighted windows. Fortunately we won't have that on the actual model.

If the bridge was more prominent, I think that would help. Like if you could see the triangular windows of the bridge, you'd get the sense that a person is about X tall. You wouldn't be able to see them at all on a 12-inch ISD, so seeing them here would help.

There's another thread where a Vigil-style sensor dish is placed on top which helps with the sense of scale, along with some nice updates to the hull plating color.

Still, I like this thing. It's been pointed out that it's no great leap from the Sith Fury-class interceptor (aesthetically, I mean—I know very well which era it's from) and the Sith Infiltrator/Star Courier.

  8. 1: Like Boomer_J, I play solo (almost exclusively) but spend more time collecting, painting, and organizing than actually playing.

2: Without the pressure of competitive play, I'm comfortable fielding squads of weak ships like pre-Raider TIE/Adv just for the cinematic appeal.

3: I enjoyed the prequels immensely and most of TCW (primarily when there were spaceships on the screen) and would love to see a standalone-but-compatible Republic era game.

  9.

I am not in love with that vacuum thingie...

Neither am I, it's a pretty stupid looking ship, but it really is the most iconic and well known fringer ship in the appropriate size class. I really have a hard time seeing the scum huges be anything other than the Wilde Karrde and a gozanti.

Same here for the most part. I'd take it without the convenient carry handle, though.

  10. I mentioned some confusion over it, in part because I saw it paired with a starfighter like the GR-75 and wasn't sure which of the two Rebel huges it meant to counter. I see now that I skipped right over the 150m statement in the news article, so I guess that answers that.

Still thinking we're likely to see a Gozanti at some point.

  11.

I don't want to be right, because I really want an epic scum, but the type of comradery it would take to fly a ship that large just doesn't exist among thieves. It would fit the characters to not have an epic scale ship. (Please be wrong)

Booster Terrik would like to make your acquaintance. He has invited you aboard his ship, The Errant Venture

Talon Karrde and the Wild Karrde, while we're at it.

Sorry, Micky axed that future. :P

Also the hound's tooth is only 47.4m long, huge it is not. Large, yes. Huge, nope.

    So... Trigon one maybe. :P

I wouldn't count on Disney's acquisition to preclude any use of existing EU material. If they did, we wouldn't be seeing EU bounty hunters in Scum, or characters from SWG in the Raider expansion.

The only reason they announced that decision was to be able to produce new canon material without being tied down by existing EU, some of which was friggin' ridiculous.

Another example: I'm playing Star Wars Commander on Android right now which is a brand new Disney/LFL game...and it has the HWK, and the Decimator, and the TIE/D, and some vehicles based on 1980's Kenner toys, and Dark Troopers, and the missile walker from The Force Unleashed.

I think the EU is safer than a lot of you realize—even if they're calling it something different now.

  13. I will be surprised if there isn't another Epic size Imperial Ship. With Epic rules allowing a max of 5 epic points, this will leave 2 points that couldn't be used if the Raider is Epic 3 just like the Tantive 4.

I'm willing to bet we'll see a Gozanti. That would definitely be more in line with the GR-75's relationship to the CR-90.

  14. I'm much more forgiving of the Raider than OP, but actually the Vigil's sensor dish was the first thing that came to mind as a possible mod. Reading through here, I also agree strongly that the hull-colored plating is much improved.

  15. My only issue with this (and it is hilarious) is that it is taking us away from classic OT ships. There were no swarms of TIE/Adv. I kind of wish we saw more straight up battles of small base ships from the OT in the proportions they appeared in-universe.

That being said, I'm not against this at all. It's hilarious. What's the closest Rebel equivalent? 12 Refit A-wings? Would they even stand a chance?

It's a huge galaxy, though. There are literally tens of millions of inhabited systems. You see about 8 systems in the OT. I did the math, that represents 0.000012% of everything the Empire considers under its control.

I think a case could be made for the Empire producing test runs of a few hundred or thousand TIE/Adv and not considering that to be full production. There's also some precedent already set with Storm squadron.

I'm all for recreating OT battles in the nearest on-screen proportions, but I think it's okay to factor for stuff off-screen, too.

  16.

I just want to know whether the Raider will be able to fulfil its intended purpose. The Corvette is many things, but an anti-fighter platform it is not. If the Raider is going to suffer from the same problem of not being able to fire its guns... well, I don't expect to field it a lot.

Like I said months ago in another long tread about our love and disappointment for the HUGE Ships. They need double the energy they have. In EPIC these HUGE Ships are the stars of the game and they need to be kicking some ass.

I personally think they need much higher attack values, then maybe also grant their smaller targets extra defense.

I'd expect that in a "real" engagement most turbolaser shots would miss, but the ones that connect would obliterate anything small.

Higher attack values would be useful for huge versus huge as well. I'll probably draft up some house rules based on this because, although I'll buy the huge ships, fielding them has always seemed pointless. I'd rather have a game where a turbolaser was like 8 red, but if the defender rolls 2 or more evades, then all damage is ignored.
