Earthworm reacted to Khyros in Chardan Refit on X-Wing?
I would argue that the devs realized that traditional missiles would become even more expensive on the A wing.  Thus why they created the proton rockets.  A wings, and basically A wings alone like the Procket, even for 5 points.  It creates a choice between a 5 point 5 dice attack, or putting those points to use elsewhere.  Choice = good.

And the Procket is essentially priced like a 5 point missile should be.  However it's not over powered on other ships due to the mechanics of the rocket.  Realistically, only 3 agility 2 attack ships are interested in it.  (3 attack primaries are only getting a 1 die increase, which isn't worth it, and 1-2agi ships don't get enough of a boost to offense to be worth it).  This leaves the TIE/x1 as the only other ship interested in the Procket.  Yet no one seems to take it on that.  Your Aces don't want it because it doesn't synergize with ATC, which essentially makes the x1 a 3.5 attack ship.  And your lower pilot skill people don't want it for the same reason you rarely see it on Greens or Prototypes - it's too difficult to maintain the R1 required for the shot.

Now the TAP has been introduced in W8, and we'll see how that plays, but the TAP prefers the TL action, at least the 1 point /V1 TAPs do... And there really isn't any reason not to take the /V1 unless you don't have points, in which case you're not discussing a 3pt missile anyways.  CR did not destroy the design space for missiles.

Earthworm got a reaction from Mu0n729 in So, about the Squadron Benchmark site....
Two things I find amusing about this thread-

    1. Immediate vassal bashing.

    2. Complaints about the AI (especially when it doesn't use card effects)

Number 2 first.  This software is an incredible accomplishment.  It's a free, homemade program that actually runs through all the game mechanics, and also as a bonus has a rudimentary AI.  Most people are just pointing that out, but every time one of these threads comes up, there's always the "The AI is too stupid to do this obvious 3 or 4 card combo, pls fix" comments.  Freeware has spoiled us a little.

As for the comparisons to Vassal, there's a bit of history in order.  Vassal was originally a client for Advanced Squad Leader, and as such excels as stacking virtual counters in hexes.  In the ASL module, the counters are almost all "dumb" i.e. they have no attributes or abilities other than what's on the two sides, and no actions beyond "flip."

The X-wing module has been shoehorned into this framework and every weird thing that the module does or requires stems either from this legacy or from avoiding waking the slumbering giant copyright Mouse (successful after 3 plus years, btw).  The module is at the extreme edge of what Vassal can handle (I 'opened the hood' once to look at building better ways for resolving collisions- it's got so many layers and classes that allow it to do what it does, and work around the platform's limitations).  Nobody claims that the module is perfect, but people who are experienced with it run it just fine.  Mu0n (and the developers before him) have wrung water out of a rock getting the module where it can do what it can.

The Benchmark actually is the game, Vassal is just the pieces, though with a lot of the game baked in, but that's just all semi automatic processes- you still need to know the game, as there is no way that vassal could ever be taught it- it simply doesn't have the capability of 'running' anything.  (An example is collisions- the platform doesn't have a way for counters/tokens to interact with each other, other than for being stacked.)

The fact that Vassal is free and 'dumb' is what makes it relevant- It's easy to have a universal server to handle all different kinds of games, bringing together a critical mass of numbers to make having a server worthwhile. Anybody can write a module, and anybody can play.  And people do- in the last month there were 23,298 sign-ins to the server and 4,324 game rooms opened, just for X-wing.  The server is what makes online X-wing play as a community endeavor possible- spectating is just as important as playing.  (For this reason, among others, I'm hugely skeptical of Tabletop Simulator as an answer to Vassal.  There's not enough of a player base to justify getting into it.)

The developer of the benchmark software has stated clearly that he does not intend to expand to multiplayer versions, which would require its own server, and again bring in the copyright concerns.  The Vassal Server is agnostic about what game is played, largely immunizing it against legal intervention.  Now if someone were to fork this software and take it online to a server where you could browse games, spectate and play, that might be a thing, but it'd be such a huge undertaking, not to mention a legally risky one.  Until then, there's vassal.

So in the end, this is a fun little piece of software, and while it does some things better than the Vassal platform allows the X-wing module to do, it's a different animal entirely, and provides no excuse for not learning Vassal.

Earthworm reacted to Mu0n729 in Report: great customer service from Team Covenant
Goal of this post: Dispense a positive news whenever I can

I've been participating in the vassal league (latest newsletter:https://www.reddit.com/r/xwingonline/comments/4eyeik/league_newsletter_4152016/) since its beginning a few months ago. During the test season #0, round 2, I placed high enough to be in first place of my set of divisions, netting me a prize from their sponsors, Team Covenant. I was asked which set of tokens I wanted, so this is what happened:

-Asked for the Rebel tokens ($20 value, their older set) http://teamcovenant.com/store/shop/star-wars-x-wing/squad-tokens/alliance-token-set.html
-Received the Force Awakened TEMPLATES ($40 value) http://teamcovenant.com/store/shop/star-wars-x-wing/squad-templates/squad-templates-awakened-alliance.html

Since it was a prize, it felt weird to contact them for a mistake that was to my advantage, but I'm already a user of their old orange set of templates (rebels represent, yo), so I had no need for further templates. I contacted them and proposed an exchange for their newer asteroid set (equivalent difference value) if I sent them back the templates.

    They told me:

-Keep the templates, ie give them out to a local newer player or whatever -we'll send the original tokens you were supposed to get

That's right there why Team Covenant has a great reputation. Say what you will concerning their item prices, but you can't ask for more in terms of customer service (even if I wasn't even a customer in the original transaction!). The least I could do was to report this publicly, but I went further and gave them my business for:

-full set of asteroid + debris tokens, which I wanted eventually anyway (was just a matter of time)http://teamcovenant.com/store/shop/star-wars-x-wing/asteroids-debris.html

Yeah the assumptions are the important part. Garbage in, garbage out.

K-wing + TLT. Not that great. And that's what the math says as well. Everyone kind of knew that already.

But nobody had really looked into the math for K-wing + TLT + Tactician, including myself, although it was in my queue at the time. (Then I get beat by it in round 3, that'll teach me for waiting...) The math says that there's a huge boost in stress utility, which should be able to make up for the lower raw jousting efficiency. And that's essentially what we see in practice as well.

What ultimately matters is that the mathematical model reflects reality.

A baseball player doesn't consciously use calculus to compute the ideal location for his glove given the initial conditions of a fly ball. But that's okay, because calculus isn't worried about whether you care about it: it's going to keep describing the path of the ball anyway.

Of course it is: you'd use a regression-discontinuity design.

Math is the language we use to describe the universe, and there's no aspect of modern life it doesn't touch. The computer you used to type your post, for instance, is fundamentally a device for adding and multiplying numbers really quickly. And most of the things I have fun doing--watching TV and movies recorded, edited, and transmitted digitally; reading books composed using word-processing software, then printed by computer-controlled presses; playing a dice game with a strong geometric component--involve computers.

Specifically in X-wing, math is an important tool for figuring out the difference between a good list and a bad list. It's more fun to play with good lists, especially if you have regular opponents who play with good lists, and I do. So for me, math makes X-wing more fun, not less.

Earthworm got a reaction from TasteTheRainbow in Sign Up for the Next Season of the X-Wing Vassal League!
“As heard on NOVA Squadron Radio!”

After a successful test season that began with 216 players from around the world, we’re excited to announce that we’re accepting signups for the first full season of the X-Wing Vassal League.

Further details on how to sign up are at our Reddit page.

What is this league all about?

This is a multi tiered league for playing X-wing over the VASSAL online client, and is open to players at every level from Paul Heaver (yes, he’s in it) to the newest beginners.

If you join, you’ll be in one of our Outer Rim divisions of about 10 new players from the same time zone. You’ll have two and a half months to play each member of your division (plus a player from each of the neighboring divisions) once. There is no set schedule- you can play your games whenever you and your opponent can find a time. This allows you to go on vacation or otherwise have a life during the season.

If you are one of the top players in your division, you advance to the Inner Rim divisions, where competition is a little tougher, for the next season. The top players from this division advance to the Core Worlds divisions, while the bottom players are relegated back down to the Outer Rim divisions. The overall league is a pyramid, with a wide base of players at the bottom advancing upward towards a small number of seats at the top where the world’s best online X-wing players will be.

Prizes are available for division winners at all levels, including tokens and templates from our Prize Sponsor, Team Covenant!

Again, for more details on how to sign up, the structure and rules of the league, how to play on Vassal and more, go to our info page at our Reddit page

    Signups close April 1.

I will throw in my agreement, with the caveat that the Co-Opted Twisted Version of Fly Casual must die.  I spieled about it at length on our recent show, also with much the same trepidation.  I stated that I'm perplexed that people get livid when (under the guise of this motto) their opponent declines to break the rules.

However, hearing Doug define Fly Casual as being kind to your opponents and treating them well, I think the concept (if not the motto as twisted by many) maintains perhaps even greater value as X-Wing continues to explode.

"When maneuvering, use the rear base in conjunction with the appropriate maneuver template."
With several years of merchant service in my wake and a lifetime of sailing, ships steer from the rear. The pivot point is never forward of amidships and is often found in the first third of the hull going forward from the main screw.
Besides I like the cinematics of swatting ships by swinging the bow more than kicking out the stern.
