Please remember, however, that X-Wing has global community of players, and many valued participants on these boards are not native speakers of English.  Additionally, we're not perfect.
However, I do tell my own students that using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation is an important sign of respect, especially on the text-reliant Internet.  Just as we use our tone of voice to indicate our regard for our audiences in conversation, we have to be mindful of how we write does that as well.

My kids have been playing since they were 3 and 5.  Get the maneuver reference cards off the Board Game Geek forum, and have them pick their move when its their turn (no planning phase).  We don't use actions, but we do stress for maneuvers.  Mostly I just run a bunch of ties for them to shoot at.  The Falcon is good for kids because they never miss a chance to shoot.

At that young age, it's all really about getting them to get used to taking turns, following sequence, and adding dice.  I see it as building good habits as a gamer, not so much as building X-wing skills.

A free for all furball is a great choice is your group has a limited amount of time, or an odd number of players.  We run with infinite respawns, and allow people to come and go- somebody wandering around in the store looks over, and we say "want to play?  Here's a ship"  Instant gratification.

"Silver Squadron" meets each Wednesday at Avalon Comics at the Kitsap Mall (just inside the Main Entrance on the Kitsap Mall Blvd. side) from 6pm-9pm, though people are often there a bit earlier.  We have players that come from Bremerton, Silverdale, Bainbridge, and from as far as Port Angeles.

Play is usually informal, with a mixture of 100 point games and some scenarios, with the occasional furball.

For more info, find Silver Squadron on Facebook.

Making a paper template is explicitly illegal in tournament play.

Using maneuver templates and range rulers to measure while setting up is permitted.  I think StevenO is referring to using an arrangement of templates and rulers to place your ships during setup.

I don't see any reason why this couldn't include using templates to measure your ships relation to points ahead of them on the board, in addition to their relationship to other ships or the board edges.

"Battle of Yavin" or "Aces over the Death Star" with goodies for Y-wing and Tie Advanced.
(Yes I know that there was only one T-A over Yavin, but those are the oldest ships with the smallest number of specific cards.  They are also the only wave one ships with only two unique pilots, for example, and certainly the T-A is recognized as being not the most attractive choice,)

If I were a pilot, I'd fly the falcon because I get motion sickness, and I'd be throwing up all over an a-wing cockpit.   The falcon also looks comfortable, and probably has beds to sleep and maybe a beer fridge.

Many Board games don't have a never ending expansion mentality, and people keep buying them.

If FFG keeps the competitive circuit going with store championships / regionals / worlds, and they tweak it here and there to ensure there is excellent balance that allows for hundreds of viable competitive lists, it will keep players interested regardless of additions to the game. I'd much rather see a complete game with a bow on it, than endless bloat that eventually tears the game apart.

I printed out GeckoTH's Maneuver cards from BoardGame Geek, and let my sons (3.5 and 5.5) pick their maneuvers for their high skill pilots when it's their move turn.  No dials, no actions.
They have fun, and they work mostly on addition and subtraction with the dice.  The Falcon is a good bet, but my 3 year old can point an X-wing at the enemy pretty well.

I ripped the old 4 disc soundtrack boxed set to my NAS, and I play it through a Sonos system controlled by my phone.
I had a non-gamer but hardcore SW fan friend playing in our group's casual big battle. She realized she was hooked when the vocals for the RotJ end theme came on and that we'd played through all three soundtracks.
Having my whole library available though my phone is useful for other gaming- I ran an Ennio Morricone compilation while we were playing 'Bang' until I popped on 'I shot the sheriff' at the opportune moment...

Agree with Durham above- my 3 and 5 year old play. I let them pick their template when it's their turn. I give the mOre easily frustrated one (5) the Falcon, so he always gets a shot. My three year old actually 'gets it' and has been pretty effective with Wedge Executed an effective pincer move last time- each boy bagged a couple of ties.
Just get ready to repeat ad nauseam, "Remember to only touch them by the base!"

The simple text-based view returns for your cutting and pasting convenience!  Click the "Simple View" button in the View as Text dialog to switch modes.  Printing is still fancy, though. Expansions providing each card are now listed in the info panel in the main builder (similar to how they are shown in the Card Browser).  Card counts to come later. Let me know if there are any bugs.
