themensch got a reaction from The Grand Falloon in Player feels like a passenger
I don't see how having a backstory is going to change her play style - she's still going to be reactive, just to things that are part of her story. Could offering her different routes to solve problems give her the agency she seeks? To be honest, unless she's directly guiding the narrative, then she's always going to be reactive and that's more often the case at the tables I've sat at - GM presents a scenario, players react. Rarely does the GM just open the curtains and say, "okay what do you want to do?" without dangling some hooks in front of the players.

That's my experience too, on both sides of the screen. It takes a very special group to be able to pull this off, but often falls into inside jokes unless it's done just so.
For those reading that haven't tried it, often the illusion of free will is enough - and that can be done by masking hooks in event descriptions among other things. This is how we can prep for a session without appearing to railroad the group. Utilizing tools like Dungeonworld's Fronts can imbue a setting with a life of its own. But at the end of the day, a GM must remember that everyone's generally there to satisfy their thirst for adventure and the GM should be at the forefront (but perhaps not the sole purveyor) of said adventure.

Hey, don't let me stop you. Now everyone can have 2000 XP! Next we'll have to get funding from the Hugg* Cartels.
* like Hutts, but made of not-slimey plush materials. Also quite lovable.

Why? Why isn't it fine at the game table? I presume you don't describe how players eat or go to the fresher either, I know I screenwipe those moments away.

themensch reacted to drainsmith in Genesys Master Resource List (revamped)
@SkyJedi is stepping away from most of his involvement in the Genesys community since Keyforge has stolen his fancy. I'm sure most of you are already familiar with me and my work and probably already interact with me in the other parts of the online Genesys community that I run. Because of these reasons I'm taking over responsibility for maintaining the master resource list here.
Please be patient while I build the list anew here as the first comment.
If you'd like something linked, please make a separate forum thread, for discussion and links, and I'll link to that thread.
If you had something in the previous thread and it is not represented here, please post again.

themensch got a reaction from whafrog in How to write your own adventure that doesn't suck?
Why, there's a book about that: How To Write Adventure Modules That Don't Suck
However, many people have said there isn't a "right" way, you really have to find what works for you and your players. If it's not fun for you to prep, then it's not right. So grab the reigns of the things that excite you and it will come through in your adventures. I guess this is sorta meta advice but it applies regardless of how you approach it.

themensch reacted to drainsmith in Don't Despair - Episode 3 - Back to Basics
With Scott and Matt having to each separately deal with extreme life events, the rest of the crew, with the lead of Anastasia, cover the basics of the core mechanics of Genesys. https://anchor.fm/dontdespair/episodes/Episode-3---Back-to-Basics-e887sb -

If there are any MapTool fans out there, I've thrown together a framework for Genesys, and would love for people to take it for a spin.

themensch got a reaction from GnosisNoise in Dark Sun
I've only read 5 of the fiction books that surround Dark Sun, and I've played a whole lot in Athas across several D&D editions and know the setting pretty well - I think Genesys would work pretty well for this setting! The D&D mechanics are so cut and dry, where as Genesys leaves a lot of room for interpretation. It adapts the the fiction to a game really well in my mind. I feel like that Genesys is just a toolbox and once skinned properly for the setting, it can perform really well just about anywhere, Athas included. The burden, as always, is on the group to make an entertaining story, and I feel like Genesys provides hefty options to do so.

themensch got a reaction from Spartancfos in Minion Deaths and the Hp pool
This is how it's done RAW. An attack role doesn't represent a single pull of the trigger, it represents a brief period of time in which shots are exchanged. It's the same reason this system doesn't track ammo, it's all in the narrative. I don't find it at odds with the narrative once I understood this, in fact I find it more accurately represents the action scenes I've seen on screen. Imagine a battle scene from Lord of the Rings, Into The Badlands, Rambo... I could go on. The hero lays waste to those weaker foes, cleaving them in two at a record pace. _Those_ are minions.
You're headed for a bad time if you want abject realism in Genesys.

themensch reacted to drainsmith in AMA with Andrew Navaro
With FFG being a relatively small company, it is understandable how your marketing can really only handle a few items at a time. Genesys is getting a little more attention with another generic sourcebook and a GM screen announced. The addition of the Keyforge setting book should also put the Genesys name in front of more eyes. Is this the basic marketing strategy of Genesys, to basically use current fans of a setting/IP as a way of showing them Genesys? Are there plans to market Genesys more and possibly target people that may be willing to come over from established generic systems like GURPS or Savage Worlds? What is the role of Genesys in the overall product line up of FFG?
