With finals over as of yesterday, I sat down to finally get down to business.  Dwarves pulled it out against the Flight to the Ford - guess their stubby little legs can outrun the Nazgul after all (cause they certainly weren't riding horses).

I pushed it really hard, used Frodo's ability when needed to save my low health dwarven allies, and even washed away the Witch King.  I ended up simply beating the quest by questing super hard - I had a timely "Untroubled by Darkness" which helped boost the willpower of the board state pretty high.

Onward we go later this weekend!

I've locked in my heroes, but it is not reflected there.  (I figure you just ran out of time, so here you go)(can't find the table, but I made this up in Excel of course so it won't copy over 100%, but the data is accurate)

In relation to decks: I have some thoughts and have essentially created them on rings.db, but I'm not 100% on either of them at this point.  Is it OK to submit rough drafts?  I assume once we hit the ground running we'll still have the options to swap stuff out of a sideboard or something, right?  Or are we stuck with exactly what we provide to you as a deck list?

Thanks for all the organization for this!

Is it OK to decide to run 2-handed solo at this point? I've never done it, and this could be a good chance to try it out and see how it rolls.  It pains me to see so many Dwarves unloved.

No, you need to be outbid on a hero in order to make a new bid.

Yup! I'm okay with that--I have never built a 3 siblings deck, so I'd be okay with not getting a discount. Good excuse to try something new.

You definitely need a core set.  It has some of the most useful and OP cards there are... it also has a solid foundation of tools for you to build off of.

After the core, you can go basically any direction you want.  You will be able to use the player cards in ANY pack/box.  The quests are a different story though.... If you buy a pack then you'll be able to use the player cards, but you'll need the deluxe box corresponding to the pack in order to play the quest (and you'd want it anyway for story continuity).  The saga boxes as best played in the order they came out with the exception of the 2 hobbit boxes which you can get after the lotr saga boxes if  you want.

    Hope that helps.

The Core Set should be the first option to buy.  In it, it includes 3 quests.

The Shadows of Mirkwood Adventure Pack cycle "tie in" with the Core set cards, as you use quest cards from the core set to build the Mirkwood Adventure Packs.

Each Adventure Pack comes with player cards + quest cards.  In order to play the adventure pack's quest, you will need quest cards from the Core Set (for Mirkwood Cycle) or from the Deluxe Box (example: Khazad-Dum) in order to play the quests found in the Adventure Packs from the Dwarrowdelf cycle.

Khazad-Dum + Dwarrowdelf Adventure Pack Cycle
Heirs of Numenor + Against the Shadow Cycle
The Voice of Isengard + The Ring Maker Cycle
The Lost Realm + Angmar Awakened Cycle
The Grey Havens + Dream-Chaser Cycle
Sands of Harad + Haradrim Cycle (current cycle the game is on)

There is no rotation cycle, like there is in the other LCG's (Netrunner, Star Wars) as the game is not competitive.  So once you buy the cards, they can be used in any deck.  There are core set cards that are definite staples in every deck, and depending on how you deck build, you could also use the heroes from the core set too.  There are a good handful of core set cards that will always see use.

The Saga Expansions, just to add follow the stories of the books.  We are awaiting the last Saga expansion, due to be released this year, likely at GenCon.  The Saga expansions include player cards, but the quest cards will only be mixed within the saga expansions, and the player cards join the card pool that is available to players too.

    Time for a matchup spotlight!

    A-killin' in Ithilien

This matchup spotlight is on that Captain of Gondor, Faramir, and the Ringbearer himself, Frodo Baggins!

    Faramir says:

I am your favorite "what if" hero.  What if I had joined the Fellowship instead of my brother Boromir?  What if I had taken the Ring from Frodo in Ithilien?  What if I had burned with my father Denethor?  What if my Lore version art was on my Leadership card?  What if I have to face my brother in the semi-finals?  So many possibilities, my friends.  But beyond those are certainties.  Excepting Treebeard himself, only I can rouse an Ent on the turn it is played.  But I do it for free.  Only I can give you an extra game-saving use from your core Gandalf, or let leadership Anborn use his ability and attack as well.  Vote for Faramir, friends, and see your allies' strength grow.
Frodo says:   Hullo! It seems I've got to explain myself.  Well, I'm a Hobbit of the Shire, and although we are small folk, we are hardier than we seem.  Trust me to be the defender you need in your deck, even if I'm exhausted.  I have a good friend in Sam Gamgee, a stalwart ally in my sphere.  Do you need to get someplace quietly?  I can help with my low starting threat of 7, and access to many threat-reducing cards in my sphere too.  And if you bring along a Pipe for me and my friends, I can help you find whatever else you need.  Although I can't carry the Ring in your Saga, I can let you quest all-in without worrying about losing a hero to an unexpected attack.  I can shrug off a bit of Archery and, if you don't mind boosting my hit points with some Boots from Erebor, an Ent Draught, or other ways, I can save your whole table from a round or two of Archery at the cost of some threat.  Now I've said my piece, I hope you will vote wisely! --------------------   Right now Frodo leads Faramir 56% to 44%.  Voting on this round closes at noon CST on Thursday Dec 15!  Make sure to get your vote in!

To add a small addendum to the restricted rule: if you have two restricted attachments on a character, and you attempt to play a 3rd, you can choose to discard one of the first two in order to allow for the new one to attach. (pg 24, core rule book)

Agree with all your points.  Mainly just wanted to do it for thematic sake and also to push the new Strider attachment to its limit, but that did not work nearly as much as I wanted.

Thanks for the clarification on how RingsDB will treat it as a tactics deck.  I saw it show up on the front page once or twice with it in the Tactics section, so I figured there was something working under the scene that allowed for that to happen, specifically that I had a bunch of Tactics cards.

I was able to get this to table a few days ago as a 2-hero deck and it worked out pretty well.  Strider + Light of Valinor gave me plenty of options, though yes, the lack of a 3rd resource was limiting in some cases.  Surprisingly, I never saw a Resourceful in my first game at all, and managed to do just fine, and 2nd game I might have seen one two rounds before the end of the match, so again it was kind of negligible (Gandalf's Staff, Expert Treasure Hunter + Hidden Cache + Wizard Pipes on both Radagast and Gandalf worked wonders, as one player at the table put it: "that is [was] disgusting").  Probably won't try the 1-hero approach again unless something else comes out to support it specifically.

Just as an aside, RingsDB calculates sphere affiliation based on which sphere has the highest number of cards in your deck, but it doesn't consider Neutral in that calculation. So if you build a deck with 49 neutral cards and 1 tactics card, RingsDB will treat it as a Tactics deck.

More broadly, the problem I have with one-hero decks is exactly the one you ran into. Two-hero decks are already pretty hard because they cut your economy by a third, and they reduce the number of starting actions available to you by a third. One-hero decks take that already heavily-gimped start and cut it further in half. There are cards to help with the economy (Resourceful) and the actions (Strider), but with only one resource a round, it will take you 2 or 3 rounds to get them set up even if you draw them, (which is about a 50/50 proposition if you're mulliganing aggressively), and during those 2-3 rounds you're getting worked over by the encounter deck.

In the two-hero meta, heroes who help cover for the economic hit are pretty vital-- specifically, Leadership Denethor and Hero Arwen. I wouldn't say you can't build a decent 2-hero deck without either, but they're definitely the cornerstones of the archetype (Gandalf / Glorfindel is a fine pairing, and I've made a Pippin/Sam deck that worked fine). Leadenethor can drop both a Strider and a Resourceful in the first planning phase, which would greatly speed up a 1-hero start, but the odds of getting both are pretty slim without any other draw. (This is why I like pairing Denethor with Beravor, Galdor, or Erestor in 2-hero decks.)

Really, I can't see 1-hero decks ever becoming a thing capable of beating any except for the very easiest quests unless the developers start releasing cards specifically for it. Like, a hero that gave you 4-X resources per round, where X was the number of heroes you controlled. Or one who gave you +1 resource and +1 card when he was the only hero on the table.

There are loads of resources out there for timing windows and such (as well as in the rulebook) but I really like this version, and how it is streamlined, in particular for knowing when action windows exist!
