Eh, Rokugan is no more medieval Japan than Dungeons and Dragons is medieval Europe. There should be no expectation of anything other than the occasional borrowed trapping.

Unicorn looks super good, though not sure about the clan champion. Her* ability at 1st glance doesn't seem that great compared to other clan champs.

Hey, you guys cycle your hand as fast as you like. Between that, a desire to draw cards fast helping contribute to self decking (and honour loss), and spending honour for benefit, and bringing that Honour-based game loss is looking like the easiest way to put Scorpions in their place.

As far as my experience goes, it basically comes down to agreeing with a guy called ktom.

Be careful. Remember that anyone you meet (if they're 3-cost or less) might be a Scorpion actress. To be safe, you'd better hit everyone you meet with that tetsubo just in case. They'll understand.
If you actually do this, please send me pictures.

We already got all the Scorpion Clan cards previewed. We just did not notice.

Nothing wrong with theory crafting, now that we have the rules and over 75% of the card pool, we have a decent idea of how the roles could fit into clans that have been spoiled.

I disagree. We already have a fun thread on how the Role Cards are a bad, unbalancing effect on the game. We might as well examine them.

...but then you discover that your Warrior Poet, who was doing the trampling, was actually a Scorpion actress all along.
Then she writes poems about you, poems so sarcastic that all your peoples get -1/-1.

I gotta say, cardgamedb was a much better site for community discussion: a card database and deckbuilder on the same site was very useful, as well as properly moderated forums and separate rules threads...
Sadly, once FFG took over that site they basically lost interest in it. At great personal effort I wrote a series of articles for cardgamedb (under the username Asklepios) and after the GW license loss went down, I asked in the backstage / admin forum what the legal status of the articles would be, as I wanted to back them up elsewhere, but under the submission agreement I'd handed the work to them.
That was back in October 2016, and no reply has emerged. We also tried (from April 2017) to get a Lo5R site set up, emailing and calling for attention from the usual people, but basically there's no response at all.
Cardgamedb continues to exist only because no-one in FFG is paying enough attention to take it down. Any new articles are coming from those who admin status before it got moved into the oubliette.
The mistreatment and wilful ignoring of cardgamedb by FFG was almost a dealbreaker for me for getting into another FFG game. It's only a sheer love for Five Rings that has brought me back, though a large part of me wishes it was being run by a company with more respect for its fanbase.
Still, if they can make a good game, then quality will earn a lot of slack. It's just a shame they couldn't have taken the 15 to 20 minutes to add a forum to cardgamedb, and to glance at the admin forums to respond to the occasional query or post. It's just dumb business sense, not to invest 20 minutes of time in maintaining a community that was driving large numbers of sales, generating buzz and enthusiasm for the game, and creating digital content that was significantly increasing the company's web presence.
I mean, FFG, if you weren't going to use the site, why the **** did you buy it?

If you are a truly competitive player first and care little for clan loyalty you'll just pick the clan you though got the best situation after the Role selection.  It's pretty much just another version of what competitive players already do as the card pool evolves each time a pack is released each month.
This system is really about promoting both clan loyalty and community leaders for people who care about those things.  It give those type of players something tangible in the game to fight for when they go to tournaments besides alt art cards and pins.  How well it will work is of course yet to be seen.  I'm optimistic.  This is certainly the most elaborate OP system FFG has ever devised so we can't accuse them of not getting behind there game here

Well, with Conquest, while there were plenty of warlords and factions, a few remained dominant through the games lifespan:
Kith was good from the game's release to it's final major tournament. Eldorath got good a couple of expansions in and stayed good thereafter. Worr joined the club for a while, and Kugath entered as a serious contender right near game end. There were always some Space Marines about too, but at any given point in the meta, there were 2-3 meta dominant decks, and its hard to argue that there was ever more than one meta-dominant warlord with a very specific deck shape: that is, Kith with at least 30 of the 50 cards absolute auto-includes.
Say we'd had a meta-decision thing on top of that distorting things further, how would that have looked. Say the top Dark Eldar player had a choice of a persistent effect that would boost a particular build. Would he look to open up a different build from his dominant one? Probably not - he'd instead be looking to make his faction's Tier 1 build even stronger, to gain an edge over other factions Tier 1 builds.
Thus, in pure theory at least, I'd expect that an optimisation tool (that supports a particular build and which is applied without individual option to all decks of a faction) is going to lead to a narrowing of the range of decks seen.
