It really depends on the situation. Everything in life is a fine line. I've yet to play against someone I didn't like. If they were being mean or insulting, I would definately let them fly a falcon off the table!

Still, I really don't like people that want to win at all costs. And when I say win at all costs, I mean certain people will value winning as more important than allowing an opponent to feel good about themselves and have fun in the game as well. Often those people don't have a personality type that can even understand what I'm talking about, and it's not that their "bad" people, they are just wired differently. This is a game after all. Games are supposed to be primarily about having fun.

Lets look at the fly a falcon off the board example. A "win person" in the final game at worlds would say, "the rules are the rules, this game means too much - it's the finals! The dial is dial, you loose." A fly casual person would say, "it's the intent, that was an obvious mistake, I'll be gracious and allow a redo."

The irony is that If the win person won, his victory would forever be known as "his opponent flew off the board." Whereas if the fly casual guy won, his victory would go down as an epic display of sportsmanship and his prowess would never be questioned. Who would be considered the better player?

As a side note I've experienced this myself. In my 3rd or so game ever I played one of the best players in our area at a tournament. He knew it was my 3rd game and I remember I had a shot of winning but I turned my dial the wrong way. Instead of being able to shoot his wedge I was pointed off the board. It was obvious I had made a mistake but he said "the dial is the dial" and I was actually kind of mad. I approached the game much more casually than that.

However, that experience made me a much better player. I've never made that mistake since. Not once. I also consider that player a friend of mine now. So really it is a judgement call. It all comes down to whether you "get it" or not. You'll never be able to convince someone that doesn't.

When using the Chewbacca crew card:
"No, no, no. This one (damage card) goes here (discard), that one (shield token) goes there (on the ship). Got it?"

Also, when Luke (crew) gets a kill with Solo piloting:
"I got him! I got him!"
    "Great, kid! Don't get cocky!"

When your ship gets blocked and has to stay put:
"Would it help if I got out and pushed?"

When Luke (pilot) has to make an important roll:
    "Use the force, Luke"

    When Lando screws up:
"This deal is getting worse all the time"

    When Vader shoots at Luke:
"It is pointless to resist, my son"

I can't believe nobody has said:
    "Lock S-foils in attack position"

When you consider conceding but don't:
"We'll last longer than we will against that Death Star...and we might just take a few of them with us!"

    After rebel victory:
"The first transport is away! The first transport is away!"

I also say "use the force" whenever rolling with Vader or Luke, tends to get me pure hits, or ensures that when defending I avoid all damage, works remarkably well

R2-EQ got a reaction from R5Don4 in How to have fun at a tournament when you are losing every game?
I read this and laughed because that happened to me. Lost every game lol.

My friends aren't really into this "hobby" thing so tournament play makes up a large part of my actual play experience. Never went to any before x-wing and I have got to say it's always fun to go to an x-wing tournament.

First of all you get to meet gamers who have a passion for the same game you love, and it's always fun to talk shop. You'll also make new friends, it's inevitable. Both those aspects are always fun, even if you loose all your games.

The x-wing players I've met and played against are super nice and competitive in the right way - that is by wanting to win with smart flying sans being dicks and snarky about it. I've learned from every tournament.

The only advice I'll give is bring a squad that will be really fun to play with high risk, high reward options. The squad I brought and lost with was in wave 2 and it was vader with the two named interceptor pilots. It was always a fun squad to play win or loose. I also learned a lot about how to fly interceptors that day.

The first game I lost when I misjudged vader and he daredevil crashed into another ship, then got ioned with a stress to death.

The other game I lost when I played a little kid who's father left me to babysit. The kid was trying to cheat the whole time by moving ships illegally so I had to wear my uncle cap and nicely tell him that doing those things "makes you feel bad inside" and that he shouldn't. On top of that, he didn't even know the rules so I pretty much had to keep track of his side and play for him. Anyway, I was pretty much playing against myself (he didn't understand how han, gunner etc worked, all he really understood was how to set the movement dials). Eventually his han shoots first list blew mine away, as it should have. Sounds like a nightmare game? Not really. I made a friend earlier who was sitting at the table and watching. We were chatting the whole time and it made me think about the rules more by keeping track of everything. I even let the kid redo some moves like flying Han off the table. Eventually the kid settled down and we all got something good from the game.

So really a tournament, as any experience in life, is what you make of it.

I've been away from the game for a few months but tonight I decided to stay in and paint up some more ships to get back into the swing of things.

First up was Luke in his Red 5. I used lots of pictures from the movie models and am very happy how Luke came out.

    R2-D2 came out great

I also finally got around to putting a turret on my Gold Y-Wing. Earlier this week I stopped by a hobby shop and looked at the sprues of a few opened battleship model boxes and ended up buying one. I used a bit from one of the sprues for the y-wings turret.

Honestly I'm not sure if I like it. It looks better than before but I'm not sold on it. What do you guys think?

I'm seriously considering ripping it off and go hunt for a better turret...
