As long as Battlelore is able to support itself financially they would be nuts to cut it off for RWMG. Is there the possibility of some overlap, sure. But, not to where they are cannibalizing each other, if anything having both only strengthens the brand of the universe.

Miniature war games are by definition not for everyone. The amount of time and effort in building and painting armies only to then find opponents and spend more time setting up a complex battlefield. Where Battlelore is a board game through and through. You can have a friend over for an afternoon who have never played, pull things out of the box and have them set and teach a game in a reasonable amount of time, and then pack it all neatly up put it back on a shelf(not have it dominate an entire room whether you are playing or not).

Many people that are drawn to the simplicity and elegance of Battlelore are not going to be willing to invest the time and money in a whole new hobby(which miniature wargaming is) and folks who are spending hundreds of dollars and massive amounts of time building an army for RWMG aren't going to give that up but there is a boardgame in the same universe.

Yup, if they do as with undead, then we'll see Elves coming everywhere, including BattleLore. Let's see

That could be a fantastic sign of things to come.
When it comes to Terrinoth, their last wave seemed to be linked quite closely with other products in the universe.
Battlelore got the undead faction. Descent got two small box expansions focusing on the undead. Runewars made Waiquar one of the starting armies. Lastly, Vorakesh and his zombies were part of the new Runebound base game.
Perhaps we can expect something similar with the elves? I would personally be quite ecstatic about a Descent big box expansion focusing on the elves.

Agreed. FS should have been pushed to 8 factions. It'd simply have been perfect

I'd buy a TI flavored FS as well. I know some folks out there have their "generic theme" grievances with the Terrinoth and TI universes but I'd rather invest in those knowing that there will be solid support than dip into a middle-to-heavy IP that may or may not get renewed on a yearly basis.

I am just hoping for a Twilight Imperium reskin. They could modify things to add more flavor to the universe, and no risk of losing the licence.

Day 1 buy if ever they decide to do that.

It's a nice game, and will allow you for several hours of fun with friends. Plus, I imagine we'll see many custom quests created by fans to enjoy it further.

What a waste.  With proper support and expansions, this could have been a truly great game.  As is, there's simply not enough content in the box to keep us playing.  Leave it to GW to burn you, even when you're not actually buying something directly from them.

Fear not, I spent a couple hundred bucks buying all of the Battlelore line last month. This means that Star Wars Battlelore will get announced after the movie next month. That's how it generally works between me and FFG

Well, there could be an expansion adding the Scum and Villany!

In addition to designing Freedom in the Galaxy, John Butterfield designed an actual strategic Star Wars board game way back in the day for, I believe, West End Games who had gotten a license.  I know because I was a playtester for the game, and I think I still have all the playtest materials in a box somewhere. West End went under before the game could be produced or it didn't get the license in the end, or something--I forget why the game never came out.  It was a very different approach than FitG, much more streamlined and, of course, with the iconic Star Wars characters, and was designed for two to four players.  As I rememer, there was one Imperial Player, one Rebel Player, one Underworld player (mainly representing the Hutts and their criminal network), and I forget who the fourth were but I think they were unaligned planets or possibly a different criminal group, smugglers and  bounty hunters.

    There are 25 leaders.

Could even be something where there is a General and an Admiral for each side.  That might make it interesting.  Fighting over where supplies should go.

I think those of you who say this game is a deal breaker if it is strictly a 2 player game are LIARS!  this game looks super fun even if it is only 2 players.

Freedom in the Galaxy was one of those games, like SPI's War of the Ring, where we spent less time playing the game than we did setting it up and just looking at the sheer size of it.

I should add that the victory conditions appear to be the same.  In FitG, the Empire had to discover and destroy the secret rebel base while the Rebels had to bring a majority of planets into rebellion and inflict a major military defeat on the Imperials, as I recall.

I used to play FITG quite a bit and loved it.  It's a huge, sprawling game, and for time's sake, we usually limited outselves to one of the shorter scenarios.  However, for the sheer fun of capturing hero-level individual adventures and quests coupled with massive battles with troops and fleets of ships, there was nothing quite like it.  It remains one of my favorite games of all times even if it could be a monster to play.

Rebellion looks like a streamlined version of FITG.  Just from reading what's currently available, it has many of the same features, so I think the play of the game will be similar.  In both games, you have heroes who have to undertake missions which in turn affect the loyalty/submission of planets, which in turn affects resources, which in turn affects how many ships and troops you can put into play for battle.  One difference seems to be that in Rebellion the mission/quests are entirely resolved by card play or are mainly represented by cards which was not the case in Freedom.  There were a series of charts and a paragraph book that told you what you would encounter on a mission based on planet type, terrain, type of mission, etc.  You then played out the combat situations the mission created.  Also planets were more complex in FitG in that they could have a dominant environment (urban, wild, liquid, barren, etc.) which affected both missions and the kinds of troops that could fight successfully there.  Troops were also distinguished by the kind of environments in which they could battle without suffering some die roll modification.  So the galaxy may have been richer.  Freedom in the Galaxy also had individual ships and special robots as characters, analogs of the Millennium Falcon and C3PO and R2D2, and there were special rules for their use.  John Butterfield, the designer, did a lot to add individualization and character to the game in order to build up a sense of a unique universe, since he couldn't use any of the familiar Star Wars characters.  I think he succeeded, bringing his universe and his characters to life, but at times at the cost of adding a lot of rules weight.  Biggest loss to FitG:  he couldn't use anything like the Force!

From what I've read, I think Rebellion will be an easier and faster game to play, which in today's market is a plus.  I miss some of the depth of hero interaction in missions that FitG has, but as a previous writer said, it's hard to say until we have the rules and can see for ourselves just how "heroic" and "cinematic" it is.  Personally, I'm delighted at a chance to play a strategic game of Star Wars, so hooray for Rebellion and for FFG for finally bringing this out, and if a lot of the design is reminiscent of FitG, I see it as homage.

By the way, John Butterfield did design a strategic Star Wars boardgame for West End Games.  i was one of the playtesters for it, and it was very different from both Rebellion and FitG.  It had some wonderful concepts and was a unique take on the Galactic Civil War.  I don't remember now why it was never produced.  I think West End either went out of business about then or it turned out it couldn't secure the license.  But I was always sorry that John's game never made it to the light of day.

Not so sure of the AI thing, but certainly if you're able to abstract a little from the game frenzy and are honest, you can solo the two parts without too many problems (if you can solo Chess, you can also solo Battlelore).

Have a look into the Scenario Builder. Deployment zone terrain tiles show yellow, green and purple tiles in addition to blue and red. Why would anyone need them if FFG does not plan to deliver more content?

It's been a long time since FFG has announced new products until (relatively) shortly before release.  I suspect some of that is that with some games, there was a good amount of backlash when things were delayed.  Starcraft, for instance, was delayed about a year or so, if I recall, and there were a lot of unhappy people with a message of, essentially, "why bother announcing it if you aren't going to be releasing it this year."

Can't please everyone, but just because we haven't heard anything, doesn't mean there won't be anything.  Several FFG titles have been silent, and then suddenly, out of the blue, NEW STUFF!

I wouldn't worry too much. Some games receive a constant push from the producers, some others grow at a slower pace. Look at Wiz-War: nothing for quite a long time, and then two expansions announced in just a few months. Dice are about to be released, there is a scenario editor on-line, an FAQ project active and the game's out since what? Six months?

Additionally, building a good expansion could require a lot of time, especially since there are minis involved.

With GenCon just around the corner, maybe there's some other stuff that's going on, maybe there is not, but sooner or later we'll certainly see expansions coming.
