Hi there. I wanted to make this thread in order to gather your input on the mistakes you either see other people do or make your self. By mistakes I mean mostly minor stuff like;
- how you play a card and pay for it the correct way
- when does unopposed bonus occur or applied
- the order of steps for an attack
- Force Struggle stuff
- which reactions do you need to remind your opponent of
etc etc.
I will update this for post as your input comes in, feel free to bump/vote a certain thing up/down and I will try to keep up.
So please give your opinion/votes
The "list" so far: I know it is sort of a (bad??) mix of what examples of things done wrong and a "FAQ"
- 1: Many players tend to pay resources before they put down the card they wish to play. This is wrong; when playing a card you should first put down the card, then pay the resources (if required) and then the card is "played". This helps your opponent to check/follow that affiliation resource match etc are met. Rulebook page 16:
When a player wishes to play a card
or is required to spend resources to
execute an ability, he first reveals the
card or designates the desired ability to
the opponent. Then he generates the
required number of resources from resource-providing
cards in his play area to pay for the cost. After doing
so, he plays the card or executes the designated ability.
- 2: It is ONLY the first step of the Refresh Phase that the LS player skips in his/her first turn. Luckily the FAQ have "moved" the (Any effect with the text “after you refresh” can be used after completing this step.) to after Step 3
- 3: Reactions/Interrupts are not mandatory unless it's a "Forced Reaction" or "Forced Interrupt". It is the joint responsibility of both players to ensure that the "game state" is upheld and adhered to. So in some (not all) cases it is not a "do over" or "takeback" but actually mandatory to grant yourself or your opponent a certain overlooked action or similar. From the "Tournament Rules
Special Note: It is both players’ responsibility to
observe all rules and maintain a proper game state.
This includes advancing the Death Star dial, observing
all Forced Reactions, Forced Interrupts, and passive
effects, placing the proper number of tokens on cards,
etc. If the game state is compromised through error on
the part of both players, their first recourse is to come
to an agreement between themselves as to how to best
address the situation and continue the game.
If the players cannot come to an agreement, they
may call a judge for a compromised game state. The
judge should give both players a warning for failure to
maintain proper game state, and may then arbitrate a
correction to the game state, announce a compromise,
or have the game continue in the current game state
as he determines best given the situation in question.
If the judge feels that the game state is irrevocably
compromised, he may score the game as a forfeit (loss)
for both players.
- 4: Players tend to declare attackers before they declare the target. The correct procedure is:
- Declare (target) Objective
- Declare Attacker(s)
- Declare Defender(s)
- Edge Battle
- Resolve Strike(s)
- Reward Unopposed (if applicable)
- 5: Resolving Strikes: Players tend to "Resolve Strikes" and THEN focus their unit. It is always the other way around. From the Rulebook page 20
- To resolve a strike, a player follows these steps in order.
1. He chooses one of his participating ready units.
2. He focuses the unit to strike (i.e. places a focus
token on the card).
3. He resolves the striking unit’s combat icons by type.
- To resolve a strike, a player follows these steps in order.
6: Unopposed Bonus: Many players are rushing or "prematurely" calculating or applying the "Unopposed Bonus" when attacking. As quoted on section 4 this isn't done until after all units have been focused to strike or exhausted (or dead, removed etc). Important when trying to free up Red Two.
Sincerely Niko

I'm the TO for Austin regionals next week and I was informed that I had to track and report the tournament with FFG's software per FFG rules. Has anyone else been doing that yet?
Where is this elusive and much talk about FFG software available??
-
-
If you have one nearby and they support the games you play with tournaments, prizes and play opportunities in general then id say that your FLGS is the place where you'll be getting good deals that can never be matched by any online seller or discount shop. You can't put a pose tag on the fun social interactions and nerd talk while enjoying your game in good company at the FLGS

The section on Secondary Weapons in the core rulebook states:
"In addition to being inside the attacker’s firing arc, the closest point of the target ship’s base must fall within the weapon range shown on the card"
So yes, they say "within", but they're talking about the "closest point".
Plus, the example for Proton Torpedoes says :
"Proton torpedoes can only be used to attack an enemy ship that is at Range 2–3."
So does it mean the entirety of the base has to be within the range, or am I reading too much into it??
You're reading too much into it
-
Your friend (if he means all the ships on the same side as Etahn
It applies to all friendly ships.
Nothing on the card limits it to friendly ships. In a 2 player/team game it is not possible to have a ship that isn't on Etahn's side attacking an enemy ship, but in a multi player free for all, Etahn is going to create all sorts of havoc because he will trigger when anybody attacks anybody but his side (and they meet his other conditions, of course).
Okay, of course I didn't take into account that we were playing/talking about multiplayer games of X-Wing. Nor did I mean to offend the huge tournament scene of people doing Furball while fielding Etahn.
For this I am sorry. Terribly sorry. Devastated on the brink of utter humiliation

Just curious about rules and/or how your event(s) handle this.
Using 3rd party reference material like the Movement Visualizations, or having a personal note sheet (physical or digital) with movement guides, etc.
For example, if I had my tablet and referenced one of the Movement Visualization guides while planning my maneuver dial.
Lets assume that referencing them does not slow down game play.
Are you asking if it's ok to have a 'play' book.
Kinda like what American foot ball uses.
I think I can see what you are asking and from what I can tell it's legal.
Some people can do this in their heads and can visualize where a, say, 3 hard turn left will put the ship.
As long as your not measuring anything on the table then you should be fine.
Really??
As quoted previously in this thread from page 6 in the Rules of Play:
During the Planning phase, players cannot use
maneuver templates in order to “test” where ships
will end up. Instead, they must plan their maneuvers
by estimating their ships’ movement in their heads.
And no, it doesn't specifically prohibits 2 "play book" but using the (in)famous and much feared "weapon" known as common sense it should be pretty obvious that it isn't/shouldn't be allowed and certainly not in the spirit of the game.
And yes, by practice or shear natural talent some people have an advantage in estimating their moves but such is life.
A play book wouldn't be allowed over here I am pretty sure, and I fully agree
I don't see how it would be any different from say, looking up the death blossom maneuver.
Sure you could have your first few turns planned out with a few variations based on how your opponent deploys but after that I don't see how some sort of play book would be all that useful.
Sure you could use it to help you visualize your options but it will still be an aproximation due to the fact you cannot put anything on the table.
The reason why Id say the play book is a bad idea is it would almost certainly slow down play.
The slow down is almost guaranteed and certainly it'll be a distraction and thus a possible/likely cause of disagreement when player one (looking up from his/her play book) says "Wait what did you you do/roll while I was looking through my book?!?"
Maps/charts are for pre-game rehearsal/planning but once the dog fight is on put it away and rely on your practice/experience/talent and be part of the game
-
I agree that a "play book" probably shouldn't be allowed.
However, that quote from the rule book just isn't relevant...
There's quite a difference between putting templates down to test where your ships will end up, and looking at some diagrams in a playbook.
Interested in learning more about how you find one the few (only??) sections where it is strongly indicated that this is a "do not pre-measure or attempt to do so besides what you are able to visualize in your mind".
This is supposed to be a game "simulating" dogfighting in a 3D space but with 2D mechanics. I have absolutely no objections to the use of Vassal maps or similar for home practice and rehearsing but it'll be a cold day in certain place before I'll have it a game where I am to participate.
No one will be able to convince me that it would be in the intend or spirit of the game to leaf through play books during a game. What's next?? You bringing a small magnetic whiteboard in 1:6 scale of the 3' x 3' map with conveniently square cut outs and matching maneuver templates which you move around as play progress and "consult" during the planning phase??
Enough of this silly business
You seem to have missed the very first sentence of my previous post:
I agree that a "play book" probably shouldn't be allowed.
Beside assuring you that I did see it even before you past'n'bolded it for me I will not engage in a back and forth nitpicking on minute details or opinions of whether or not my reference seems relevant to you or not

For me (as a non-native English speaking person) the discrepancy should/must be made between "maneuver reference sheets" such as the ones that comes with each ship type (and gathered/refined by Malmer) and "navigation aid" as outlined by a previous post where he/she asked if a folder with different map positions and maneuvers would be legal.
To me there is absolutely no issue with the former but the latter is unacceptable to me and I'd think most TO's I know would agree.

DUDE VADER IS IN THE TOP 8!!!!!Results from Denmark 1 week ago have been uploaded. Unfortunately the TO over-wrote the original Swiss results, so only the Top 8 are entered.
Odense, Denmark
May 3, 2015Dragon's Lair

- Top 4: Kath Scarlet + Predator + Engine Upgrade + Recon Specialist; 4x Black Sun Soldier
Top 4: Soontir Fel + Push the Limit + Autothrusters + Targeting Computer + Royal Guard TIE; Darth Vader + Veteran Instincts + Engine Upgrade + Proton Rockets; Omicron Group Pilot + Fire-Control System + Mara Jade

- Top 8: Kath Scarlet + Predator + Engine Upgrade + Recon Specialist; 4x Black Sun Soldier
That is awesome.
I'd even go as far as to say he was in Top 4, flown by mr. Malmer who always brings something fun to the tournaments.
Top 8 out of 23 isn't really that big of a deal. That's about the average size of a store championship in the states. Don't worry, you'll see plenty of him in a few months. Someone just couldn't wait I guess.
Yeah, but the guy flew him prior to the upcoming fix. And made the Top 4. And even though that might not have happened in a larger tourney and/or in a tourney consisting purely of world class players it is still, in the current game state, a bit of an accomplishment that deserves a bit of recognition and applause. Even in "the States"

How you folks feel about the FFG translucent dice, since most of them have visible air bubbles?
The weight distribution is slightly off but is it enough to warrant them not legal for tourney play?
No normal die that you buy is 100% weighted. Some bubbles don't really matter.
About the suspicious shaking:
The thing is if he refuces to change it he at least expects something from doing it. Hard to say if/when its cheating but its also not looking like fair play and generating a good atmosphere.
May I direct you to my thread here: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/175327-inside-look-of-the-2014-and-2015-promo-dice/?hl=inside
I have actual CT scans of both editions of the Regional Dice (the 2014 translucent and the 2015 "marbled") and the normal ones from the Core Set.
All of them have air bubbles, there's no extreme variation, except maybe there's actually more air in the Core/normal ones.
Direct link to videos of the CT slices are here:

WOW THIS IS SCHEIßE <--- german means **** or bullshiet.
diidnt know of that omgeeez u cant dodge auto blasters aswell now ? wow fk me then iam turning to my shielded pirates now empire is dead.
thx FFG for nuthin yes nuthin not nothing
Calm down. Let's just take a look at the range for this "over powered" unbeatable weapon:
What's that?? Range 1?? So what magic is needed to completely annul it?? Is there any?? Ohh, I guess staying away from Range 1 would work just fiiiiiine ;-)

Anyone noticed the base card is facing the wrong way??

So 'evade' tokens now count as a 'dice result'
Thats just poor on FFGs part.
To me the 'evade' action is the lynch pin of keeping an imperial fleet alive.
It meant that even with horrific abilities to make some hits uncancellable by dice you had a *chance* with evade.
Now essentially you have a few pretty much 'auto hit/autocrit' oppoents out there that used to be 'good' but are now 'ridiculous'
(tien numb with mangler was brought to my attention)
Its not like im going to stop playing or anything but i think that bit of the FAQ is getting deleted from our house rules

Just seems a fundamental change in the rules, mainly to sell mangler cannons.
Cant say im impressed.
But it has always been so, please just check the "Rules of Play" booklet:
Page 12:
Spending an Evade token
If the defender has an evade token, he may return
it to the action token supply to add one additional [Evade]
result to his defense roll.
Same for Focus:
Spending a Focus Token
If the defender has a focus token, he may return it
to the action token supply during this step to change
all [Focus] results on the defense dice to [Evade] results
