Sorry. I meant: what are the deck building rules, 1 core or 3?

No mention of the format?!

Hey all,
I noticed that the Hall of Honor page (https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/op/l5r-lcg/hall-of-honor/) hasn't been updated yet. Here's the exact text I'm referring to (emphasis mine):
QuoteHatamoto Gallery
The first Hatamotos will be promoted at the Kiku Matsuri and Honored Preview Events before the first Winter Court World Championships! These esteemed players will retain their status until the next Winter Court World Championship in 2018. Will you be among them?
Starting later in 2017, the Kotei Series will become the source of all new Hatamotos. More details are coming soon about the Kotei Series and how you can earn Hatamoto status at those events!
Return to this page starting after Gen Con to see which samurai have achieved greatness and represent your favorite clan!
So... who do we need to bug?

As an example, Shameful Display:
If the action said, "choose a first character, and a second character - honor the first and dishonor the second", it would work differently. Because you knew that you picked one to be honored and one to be dishonored, you couldn't pick 2 honored characters. When you pick the first one, you already know it will fail to change the game state. Honored characters cannot become honored because they already are (see RR: Personal Honor, Personal Dishonor). But Shameful Display is not worded that way.
The Tetsuo action isn't worded like Shameful Display either. It is worded that you pick him and up to 1 other character. So Tetsuo always needs to be able to move. And if he is already at the battlefield, then his moving will fail as it counts that he didn't move at all (see RR: move).
If Tetsuo said instead: "Choose 2 characters - move up to 2 of them to the current conflict" then it would be closer to Shameful Display and definitely work because you don't know which characters are moving yet.
Therefore, Tetsuo will not be able to pull another character to the battlefield if he is already at the battlefield.

If we had a choice between a few hundred slots filling up instantly or having a thousand slots with only a hundred people signing up, I'd personally opt for the former. Yes, it's more frustrating in the short-term, but in the long-run higher excitement will mean bigger events and a healthier game overall.
I also think it's a bit unfair to insinuate that this is an unacceptable failing on FFG's part, when most of us (I assume) have no clue about what they did or did not think about or plan. Maybe they simply couldn't get the product or the manpower to support a larger even or more eventst. Maybe they tried to get space for 1,000 seats and the venue said, "Eh, we can't give you that much." Maybe it actually was an oversight and they'll end up tweeting an apology. Whatever the case may be, we need to resist the urge to rage about our own preferred narrative and keep in mind that we really don't have any idea at this point.IMO, it's not a failing yet. There's time for additional work arounds.
It will be a failing of FFGs if no additional work is done or even considered before Gencon. If they lock in the "business as usual" mentality and ignore the hundreds of upset former and new L5R players, then that, in my opinion, is a failure (at minimum on the PR level).

If enough of the cards and rules are available, you could always print out and sleeve a couple decks. Not as good as having the real thing, but if you have no other options, it's a good stop-gap while waiting to be able to buy a core set.
This is a rather good problem to have. It's great seeing this much excitement about the game! Even if a lot of the people lose interest and stop playing pretty quickly, odds are that a good number will keep with it!
1. I think you are misunderstanding of the situation. Having a group of people yell in unison is not loud AND obnoxious. Yes it's loud, but it's loud in the sense that a troop of soldiers yells, "YES SIR".
2. This is not a rather good problem to have as a player. People are planning thousand dollars for a week at Gencon to see friends and play L5R. Sure it's great demand for FFG. That is the only good that comes out of this: verifying demand. Your comment comes off as insensitive to all of those players that didn't get tickets. Is it acceptable to fail at gauging demand for a player base that has to spend hundreds/thousands of dollars and their primary pull is this game? This could be remedied with additional events at the same or overlapping time (assuming FFG could find space and workers) so that people that already have tickets could not participate in another event.

I think it would be practical for FFG to drop the number of factions and lose the 2 decks idea.
Really the biggest thing they got from the purchase was the majority of the fan base, and the RPG line. -
When I was playing, I was a diehard Crane. What attracted me was the artistry, elegance, politics and dueling. I really loved the honor-based win mechanic and I like defensive/controlly decks anyway. Plus my favorite color is blue ;-)
Each clan has their own unofficial website. I advise checking out some of their forums to get a feel for what each clan is about.
FYI, most of those "unofficial" websites were approved by AEG to be clan websites.
That's actually a question that's up in the air right now for FFG.

I agree that Spider have some terrible synergy in their cards from one time to another, but I don't think you can prove that for the last 5 years they've consistently been mechanically crippled as you've stated in your OP. Winning 2 Gencons with Spider doesn't sound like mechanically crippled. It sounds more like you are exaggerating. Understandable, since we are mostly fan boys posting on a website for a game from FFG that won't exist for almost 2 more years. And yet even Spider won this last weekend in Kansas.
breeder was a single, preposterously environment deforming deck. it speaks to a failure in design, not a success.
other than that, it is only in the last half arc that spider has been able to put a few kotei wins together. go back and look at tournament results going back to SAMURAI. spider are consistently the worst, or bottom 3, performing clan. we have not had a single mechanical success unless you count having good personalities that other clans use better than we do (hi there Hotako) that lasted for more than lets say two expansions.
a really good example was Sparks' movement shenanigans TSL ninja deck in Emperor. which was a legitimately decent deck, if you were good enough to play it. i was not, but i know a lot of spider players were. problem was, it immediately fell behind the power curve as the rest of the environment rocketed past it. even when we got GOOD cards, design failed us.
look, you can doubt me all you want but at the end of the day, you ask 100 people who've been playing this game for more than the last 18 months, 98 of them will laugh and agree that the poor spider have had the worst design ride of all the clans. the only factions who have gotten a worse ride than us were the ratlings and the naga, and thats because they got written out of the game.
Here's what you said:
"if they hadn't spend the last 5 years being mechanically crippled by terrible design they likely would have been the most popular"
You are wrong. They have not been mechanically crippled by terrible design.
The spider faction have not spent the "last 5 years being mechanically crippled by terrible design". Plain and simple. Winning 2 Gencons does not equal mechanically crippled for 5 years.
(Unless your definition of "crippled" is different from what I understand.)
I have frequently talked with Sparks about said situation, and as I told him, Spider have some really good deck options. IMO, the biggest problem Spider had wasn't mechanical issues, it was number of good players playing Spider.
And yes, I will doubt you because I have been to tournaments and I have been playing L5R all these years, and I have been talking to people about Spider issues and no, it's not as dramatic as you make it out to be.

It doesn't seem unreasonable for FFG to continue with both of those implication set by AEG, but at they same time they might just scrap everything and start over.
Imagine Disney buying Star Wars. Would they really want to alienate the fan base and do a movie or series about something none of the fans know about, like 5000 years in the past of the current story? No. Disney wants to make as much money as possible, so they chose to make what the fans really want: a continuation of the previous storyline. I don't see how FFG is going to act much differently from Disney.
I seem to recall the announcement that they were rebooting the EU was met with some wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I expect much the same here, whatever FFG decides. Even among the Die Hards who've played the game through all 20 years, I imagine there's one player ready to fist fight his regular opponent over whether we should get to see what would have been Onyx Edition in FFG's core, or if we should skip it.
And yes, I'm implying there are only two people who have played the game without a break for all 20 years.

But that should be obvious.
No matter what happens, when a new company grabs a product from an old company, even if they don't do anything to the product there will be gnashing of teeth.
This is actually much more dramatic. As a fan group we have no idea of anything other than FFG will make an LCG. That's not much to go on at all.

The spider's mechanical woes are common knowledge. with the exception of breeder during celestial, a single deck (god bless you Ornatov), spider has not been competitive (we've picked up a few wins here and there, more in 20f) since its inception. thats just fact. on top of its unimpressive tournament results, its been more or less LOST, design wise, for most of that time, a fact that is widely and commonly acknowledged (oh hello cloud tokens, you sad sad things). this isn't partisan spider speaking. even the people who hate the spider feel bad for how crapawful we've been. thats how pathetic it is. when your enemies pity you, thats sad. the irony of the game ending right now is Evil Portents is the first time, since breeder, that we've gotten an entire batch of legitimately good cards.
ive answered the first part elsewhere

I know theres a lot of hate for the spider, but heres the thing: spider has the most active fanbase of all the clans, and if they hadn't spend the last 5 years being mechanically crippled by terrible design they likely would have been the most popular. so relegating them to the bottom of the list doesn't make a lot of sense if you're trying to bring over as many of the legacy fans as possible. this all presupposes that they're not using the onyx plot, where the spider having taken over the empire and are ruling it.
This post seems like mostly rhetoric.
Most active fanbase? Says whom? You? A spider fanatic? Sure ok.
Last 5 years being mechanically crippled? Weren't 2 of those 5 years were Spider wins at Gencon?
I just can't take a post like this seriously.
FFG can do whatever they want with the property. This is a fact.
However, it would be in their best interest to attract the most number of players. Starting a new game over with new mechanics will be hard to win a playerbase. Their choices boil down to either:
1. maintain the clans but base it off of AEG's story
2. modify the clans but base it off of AEG's story but fast forwarded to a certain point
3. do whatever FFG wants for maximum potential new player attraction
At this point, my guess is that a business FFG wants to maintain some of the AEG playerbase, so they won't choose option 3, or "do whatever they want". But also from that same business perspective, maintaining what AEG had isn't cheap to produce, design and balance, so I also think #1 is most likely, although not definitively out the door.
Option 2, or having FFG fast forward the story seems most likely to me.
Mantis were already told they were going bye-bye.
Spider were already told they were getting some power over the Empire.
It doesn't seem unreasonable for FFG to continue with both of those implication set by AEG, but at they same time they might just scrap everything and start over.

At the same time, also keep in mind that FFG has control over the RPG as well. It's easier to sell RPG books and such if they can combine ideas and concepts previously sold for L5R. (That's assuming they continue the RPG business.)

It was a pleasure playing you on Thursday's qualifier in round 4. I hope the full win got you where you needed to be! -
As soon as I saw the z95 (and c3p0) I called the yt1300 build w z95 mini swarm as completely broken and vorpal sword and major juggler argued with me saying statistically it was the same as Han shoots first.
Hm, I don't recall saying that they were statistically identical. Functionally they are similar, but I was on record very shortly after 3P0 was spoiled suggesting the "Fat Han" build (w/ PtL instead of Predator) that became very prevalent in the wave 4 Regionals:
I was certainly on record as Z's being very efficient, which is half of what is making the YT-1300 + 3P0 builds work so well now.
"Wait and see" - yeah, I usually take that approach pre-release unless something is a really strong outlier.
That said, on the immediate to-do list is:
- Update wave 3 statistics (FYI all the Spainish Regional results have been pulled in)
- Run the statistics with all squads weighted equally
- Run the statistics looking at only the winners
- ... and more.
Thanks for all the time and effort put into this.
No one is asking you to do this and yet you have. I appreciate it for one.

I like your Tie Fighters. Simple change, but cool.
I've seen people with marked dice in Attack Wing, I was wondering what this was about.
In fact, they had a dot in the middle of a hit, and proclaimed it was a critical hit. I had to point out that it was not a critical hit but a hit with a dot in the middle.AtomicFryingPan reacted to this -
I'm going to second or third Horton.
If he had EPT built in he'd be played a lot more.
I also like him with Flechette Torps. -
There's a tie defender lego kit that keeps tempting me.
The cockpit rotates. But yes, very cool!

So what you are saying is the Lambda shuttle is played 3x more than the Defender? lol
-
I thought about it and, somewhat similar to the intent behind Rebel Aces, I wanted to give the Defender some situational advantages and additional options without overtly making it more powerful.
PS 5 Defender (no Elite Pilot Talent) - 34 points
When attacking a ship with a higher pilot skill, you may reroll one of your attack dice.
PS 5 is a weird place. You have the advantage against generic pilots, but most named pilots are going to have the advantage over you. If you're short on points, this is a reasonably-costed Defender that can bite back against higher pilot skill attackers. I elected to have no EPT to justify the low increase in cost and preclude the use of Decoy shenanigans.
PS 6 Defender (Elite Pilot Talent) - 35 points
When attacking, if the defending ship has at least 1 stress token you may change one of your hit results to a critical hit result.
I know PS 6 is already occupied by Colonel Vessery, but he is somewhat dependent on running a list with ships that can target lock and I still had one idea left after the ships at PS 5 and 7. Abilities that apply or use stress tokens seem to be an increasing trend, and this ship punishes users of Push the Limit and Opportunist as well as any ship that K-turns while jousting with the Defender.
PS 7 Defender (Elite Pilot Talent) - 36 points
After executing a maneuver, if there are no enemy ships within your firing arc you may perform a free barrel roll or boost action.
With its white K-turn and all-green straight maneuvers, the Defender moves not unlike a rook in a chess game, storming up and down the board in straight lines. It's a powerful piece for pin and skewer tactics, but careful positioning is key. In flying the Defender and trying to line up those long-range HLC shots, I've found that a single boost or barrel roll is often the difference between having a great shot and no shot at all. A free action for positioning helps, and access to the boost maneuver gives us more flexibility.
Comments are always appreciated.
That's a good way too put it. Like Chess the Defender is limited like a pawn.
Perhaps that's why I dislike it. A defender should act like a Queen, but instead we got a pawn.

I like your PS6.

Ooh, I like the shuttle. The dark maroon works really well with the engines!

Darth Vader PS9 - After Darth Vader gains a focus token he may perform an additional free action.
PS4 - EPT (similar to Black Squadron) - Blank (storyline text)PS7 - EPT All his speed 2 manuevers count as green manuevers
