Major Tom reacted to gamblertuba in Unwritten Rules of Tournament X-Wing
If you have the opportunity, you owe it to yourself to come out to a system open or similar event.  Don't let the internet forums (or heaven help you, twitch chat) give you the wrong idea about competition X-wing.  It's staggering how friendly, welcoming, and fun-loving the community is.  I can't promise you won't have to play a quad phantom list in round 1, but I can promise that almost everyone there will go out of their way to help everyone else have a good time.  I had never played in any event larger than a store championship before going to Toronto for the System Open in February.  I was blown away by the community.  Dude, I'm hooked.
As for tips, especially for newer players at competitive events:
Don't be afraid to call a judge!  The judges are there to prevent hard feelings.  I can remember the first time I called a judge at a 25 player Store Champs and feeling like I was being a jerk somehow because my opponent and I couldn't agree.  That's not how it works at all.  Judges are a neutral voice that provide an invaluable service at these events by moderating disagreements without creating hard feelings.  Use them.  Thank them.  And... Don't argue with the freaking judge!  Difficult arc check?  Call the judge.  Don't like the way they rule it?  Tough.  They are the Senate.  For card interactions, if you really, really must you can call over the Marshall but then understand the Marshall is always right.  Always.  Even when they are wrong.  Just understand that, at that event, the Marshall is a force of nature.  Nobody with any sense stands in front of a glacier and rages at it.  TL:DR    Don't argue with your opponent, call a judge.  Don't argue with the judge, just don't.

Gripe about Focus all you want, but the real downfall of X-Wing was the 2 Bank Left maneuver. 2 Bank Right was powerful enough as it was, but pairing it with a Left took things too far. Now every dial in the game has to have it just to be competitive. Ridiculous!

I could see this going either way. From what I see, FFG only announces the end to games that have continuous release cycles. I would expect an LCG to have an end-of-game article, but not a board game. Therefore, BattleLore will never have an end-of-game article just like Rune Age never did. I'm not sure how they'll handle miniatures games, though. The Dust line did have an ending announcement, but part of that was acknowledging that the rights were going to a different company. I can't recall seeing any other of their miniatures game get closed down, so I think we're charting new territory. However, given that Terrinoth is their own property, I think will never say it's completely over. They'll just let it die quietly instead.

Maybe? How cheap did you want it to be? There were never going to be enough players for them to price these like X-Wing 1.0, and the market has changed since then. I believe a contributing factor in going to X-Wing 2.0 was that they could reset the pay scale and charge more for each expansion, keeping up with inflation and other things. My point is that it isn't cheap to produce miniatures, and with a game you know won't be as popular as Star Wars, you need to recoup the startup costs for molds, design, etc. I do not believe that $5 off each expansion would have saved the game and I don't believe going lower than that would have been profitable. Again, a single ship in X-Wing costs $20, but each product is produced on a much larger scale.

Didn't want to judge it too harshly without really understanding it more, so I watched a few gameplay videos on Bolt Action today...
I hated the initiative system about as much as I thought I would.  One of my favorite elements of Runewars is the ability to predict initiative.  Not only can I reasonably predict the initiative at which my opponent's units will activate at, I can reasonably plan three rounds ahead. There is no random draw that could cause me to lose an initiative race.  Runewars is the Texas Hold 'em of Miniature games.  It gives me more information to use in my decision making than anything else I've seen to this point.
Also not a fan of any games that has me rolling hand fulls of d6s and counting out the results.  Big fan of the Runewars dice system.  I think the most dice I've ever had to roll in one interaction is 5, and that is rare.
As for the size of the game... I don't think popularity is a reasonable indicator of how good a system is in miniature gaming.  There are a lot of people that play miniature games for beautiful miniatures and scenic diorama-like battlefields.  Some people want fantasy.  Some people want sci fi.  Some people just like historic war stuff.  Some people just like Star Wars stuff.  My honest opinion is that if gameplay was the most important factor in these games then Warhammer would just not be popular (biased opinion... I think that ruleset is just... bad).
For me there is no rule set that does wargaming better than Runewars.  I do wish it was more popular.  However, I didn't have a hard time convincing several of my friends to start playing it once I introduced them to it.  We will likely be playing it for the next several years, even if they don't release another thing.

Random side note, if you thought FFG’s X-Wing squad builder app was bad you should check out GW’s new Kill Team roster/team build ‘app’.  Turns out that there’s nothing FFG can make a mess of that GW can’t make a worse mess of.

Because i thoroughly enjoy playing the game at my FLGS,
have the means to spend money on the hobbies I have chosen
And personality do not care if they are or not painted.
Why should this matter to others?

I'm not a 40k player but I've heard that, at one point, they forced tournament players to paint at least Three colors on their minis due to the fact that entire tournaments consisted of unpainted armies and players trying to protect their painted models. This was bad rep for GW, so they made a new rule. All this did was make these players quickly spray three different shades on their models before tournaments.

If anyone was actually really good at this game, we would have list building theories centered around complementary movement patterns on top of complementary card interactions as a way of assessing which "good stuff that fits in 200 points" was the right "good stuff that fits in 200 points".

Well, that’s 1.0 done for me, I ended up playing at a small local convention where I was TO because we had an odd number.  I’ve had a lot of fun with the game, no matter how degenerate it’s become.  Next Thursday cannot come quickly enough.
