blatamano reacted to Kualan in [WIP] Blood And Credits - An unofficial Clone Wars adventure module feat. mystery, big battles and political intrigue!
    Hello there one and all!
Following my last community project, the expanded Clone Wars guide Heroes On Both Sides (which you can check out HERE), I'm now beginning work in earnest on my next fan book - an adventure module titled Blood And Credits.
    Cover:

As with HoBS, this book will be set during the Clone Wars era, and will feature a group of PCs uncovering a dark conspiracy ready to strike at the heart of the Grand Army of the Republic. Fans of mystery and political intrigues should get a kick out of the content in this adventure, though there will still be plenty of combat encounters and at least one big pitched battle to spice things up along the way. Key elements of the adventure module will include (but are not limited to):
    - A story based around an intricate web of corruption and treachery, with many twists, betrayals and surprises along the way.
    - Opportunities to use a variety of subsystems from the SWRPG line such as gambling and mass combat rules.
    - The chance for PCs to interact with a number of canon Star Wars characters, such as Padme Amidala or Shaak Ti. However the module will also include alternative non-canon character profiles for these NPCs, for those GMs who prefer to keep their games separate from canonical characters and events (for example, Senator Amidala's role in the story can be replaced with an original senator NPC).
    - Pre-generated characters so your group can pick up the book and play the adventure right away!
Although it will be a little while yet before the full project is released, I'm now at the stage where I feel confident sharing some of the early pages with you guys and posting updates as work progresses.
Here's a preview of the opening page spread, which features the Introduction, Adventure Overview and Adventure Background sections. This gives a brief outline of the adventure as a whole, and the background context for where the plot kicks off (so, spoiler warning I suppose!):

Huge shout-out goes to @the_dearth for their fantastic InDesign templates for the Star Wars RPG books. I'm a newcomer to InDesign, having used Photoshop exclusively up until now, but his templates have made getting to grips with new software a much less daunting task.
I'll be posting further updates as work progresses, but for now feel free to leave any feedback or questions below!

Update: I was trying to produce a template but thankfully The Dearth has rendered that unnecessary. Please use his fancy templates!
So instead I can just post the finished version, with typos and errors fixed and a new modular encounter: A Lost Delivery, where the party are sent by a wealthy Baron to chase a contractor who has refused to hand over an item from a lost temple he sent them to acquire. Unfortunately, the temple fell into a black hole centuries ago...

Even if you ignore the name of the talent, the description says, "As a maneuver, the character may brace himself. This allows a character to remove Setback..." This description in no way mates with "using audio cues", or "changes in smell or air pressure", or "to see where shadows are shifting in the light".  Can you at least give that the person who created that description did not intend the talent to include noticing changes in air pressure, smells, or sounds to remove setback to Perception actions? Since none of that is in the description? Of course, at your table, you may do what you wish. But, can you at least give that it is going beyond the rules as written? And perhaps there is a reason it wasn't intended to be such an all-encompassing setback-removal talent?
Long ago there was an argument that Brace should remove setback provided from Cover since a large rock or some such is a physical obstacle (yes I know no one is arguing that in this thread). There were two sides to that argument with no one wishing to concede much even while noting the description didn't mention anything about attacks versus cover. Finally a game designer was asked (Sam) and his answer was, unequivocally, no. For me, the idea of Brace removing Perception setbacks caused by visual obstructions (only) is equal to the attacks vs. Cover arguments. There's as much in the description for Brace to remove Cover penalties as visual penalties. Which is little if any.
Yes, yes I know this won't convince anyone. I also house rule things to my liking so I would be an **** to say others shouldn't change Brace to their own liking. But, you must admit it's a huge stretch to argue the talent, as written, was intended to do things such as remove penalties from visual obstructions or covered targets. I think it's pretty plain that it was intended for physical disruptions involving movement such as gravity changes, being jostled about in a storm, thrown about in a tumbling spaceship, on a catwalk during an explosive battle, etc.

blatamano reacted to the_dearth in GUIDE: How to layout your Star Wars fan products in the official look and feel [Updated: 18JUN20]
My favorite thing about FFG's Star Wars books is their great production quality and so early on I started to help more creative content creators putting their material in the 'official' look. My last project was to support @yaccarus to put his 'Complete Species Guide' into the official format. I always wanted to put together a tutorial to help others achieve similar results, this is it!
There are similar tutorials out there (mainly here and here), but they are somewhat outdated and as the product line nears its completion (or end), I wanted to provide a full overview. Before I go into all the details, here is the result and below the direct download link.

    Download here
    (last updated: June 18th, 2020)
    Included in this download is:
    InDesign
InDesign files for EotE, AoR, FaD, "Core" (= my name for the style of the neutral books, e.g. Allies and Adversaries) For each book, the file includes Pre-set colors Pre-defined text formats for all kinds of text appearing in the book Ready-to-go pages with page backgrounds, page elements, page numbers Photoshop
Photoshop template for EotE, AoR, FaD, Core to create a cover
Additionally, the download contains   … all page elements as separate files, in case you would like to play around with them … all page-backgrounds with side elements as single image file to import into other programs (e.g. Word, Scribus)    NOT included are all fonts, as all of them are licensed and can therefore not be included.

Below are a few more details on the templates:
    Requirement and tools
Many content is posted on these boards, on Reddit and other websites but few look like typical FFG products, and the main reason for that is the use of tools and the involved amount of work.
If you were asked to recreate a marble statue but only given a hammer and a single wide chisel, the result might be close but really hard to match perfectly. The same is true for the Star Wars books. They are put together within a typical publishing workflow that is based on the Adobe Suite of products.
The key product used is InDesign. This is Adobe's solution for all desktop publishing and has become the market standard in many areas. The problem with InDesign is that it is fairly expensive. There are old versions out there that will work just as great. Alternatively, Adobe has a 30 day trial which is usually more than enough to turn one fan product around. There are alternatives (e.g. Scribus), but they are incompatible with the provided templates, however, you can still use the provided assets.
The other key product is Photoshop, especially to change / adapt pictures to make them fit into the product. GIMP is a great alternative, but also comes with a learning curve. The trickiest part to recreate are the images and their "feathered borders". You can find plenty tutorials how to achieve this effect, so I won't go into too much detail here.
Elements of a typical SW FFG book
        Overview of the different designs
Looking at the books, you can easily see that FFG used different designs for different product lines. In this guide, I have put together information for the four most common ones (EotE, AoR, FaD, Core). They all follow the same layout design in regards to font, placement and size, but change up the page elements, the background, and the colors. I will talk about each in a bit more detail in the following sections.
      Background, page elements
Unfortunately, FFG cannot release PDFs of their products due to licensing problems, but they have released a few single files. With Photoshop, it is fairly easy to extract some of those assets out of the PDFs. I put all material together in the download above, so all elements you find there are the original ones from the books, some in almost printing quality.
      Fonts
All books use the same fonts, and I have put together an overview of which fonts here. Unfortunately, all fonts are licensed, so I cannot link them here. If you keep looking on the internet, you might be able to find alternatives or clones that are very close to the real deal.
    Colors
Lastly, the biggest differentiator between the books are the colors. I have put together a comprehensive color chart below. Please forgive my laziness not to include all color codes, the easiest way to use them is to utilize the color swatches directly in InDesign. Alternatively, pick any image editor and just "color pick" the colors off of this chart and you should be good.
I hope this material is helpful, let me know if you have any questions. Thanks to FFG for creating this really outstanding game! 🙂

On my table we have a bit of a recurring issue with the Brace talent. The player wants to twist its reference to environmental factors. He thinks it should also apply to everyhting physical like negating 1 setback die due to darkness, fog... when doing Perception or Vigilance checks even outside of structured play.
Because of the name Brace I believe it is more like taking a few seconds to breathe, calm oneself and focus before doing something and it should not apply to simply remove setbacks due to factors you do not control.
What is the general opinion? Can anybody give me more examples of its use?

Well, the fact that this topic has generated such a heated discussion makes me think that my player was not forcing the issue as I thought and maybe I should give him more freedom to apply Brace.
However Sturn's reasoning is very compelling and I will watch carefully that Brace does not overshadow other similar talents.
Thanks everyone for your comments and reasoning.

First off, sorry about all of these bug fix releases.  I had a feeling there'd be a couple of them because of the changes I made.  This will hopefully be the last one until 1.4.6.  With that said, 1.4.5.2 has been uploaded and should be ready in about 20 minutes.

Release 1.4.5.x Bug Fix   1.4.5.1 There was an XP calculation error in skills.  This has been fixed. If you had two copies of GM Tools running on the same or different computers, accessing the same data, and you modified and saved an encounter on one copy, then on the other copy, the first copy would crash.  This has been fixed. 1.4.5.2 The non-career XP fix, along with the fix to allow items to make skills career skills (where the item can be equipped or unequipped at will), caused a problem with existing characters. If an older character had purchased ranks in a non-career skill, they would be charged career XP since the non-career ranks were 0 for characters created before 1.4.5.  This would cause extra XP to appear unspent.  There is a check now to detect such older characters and fix their non-career skill ranks. NOTE:  You can actually do this by hand if, for some reason, the character isn't detected and the fix isn't automatically applied.   Just find any non-career skills with purchased ranks.  From the "Buy" dropdown, set ranks to 0, then set them back to the original value.  Do this for all non-career skills with purchased ranks.  Then save the character.  The proper XP will then be displayed and the fix will be permanent.
Changed the way minion wound is displayed on encounter sheets.  As per RAW, a minion is killed when wounds EXCEED the individual wound threshold.  The counters on the sheets had a minion marked off when wounds EQUALLED wound threshold.  This has been fixed to work by the rules. That is, the first minion is killed when the group takes wounds of threshold+1, then each minion after that is killed in increments of their wound threshold.

I had created another thread for this request but seeing that I did not get exactly what I wnated I will ask it to you. At this point 2 of my players have bounties on their heads and thought it would be interesting to scare them by showing the Bounty poster. For that reason I was wondering if you could create a form-fillable pdf for a bounty poster where I can insert the character image, the amount of money offered, some space for a write up of the comminted crimes and so on.

On the other thread some designs were suggested but none was fillable. Maybe you could do something along those lines:

'For Crimes Against the Empire' could certainly be enough. However a brief relation of the crimes adds more flavour. Specially if you read them aloud to the player as that causes some hilarious comments form the other players.

    Anyway, thanks for your effort.

Has anyone a form-fillable pdf for that?

If not, could someone make one for a bounty poster? Something with a space to place an image, another for a description, one to write some text about the crimes committed and the sum of the reward. I know I should do that myself but my design skills are very poor .

Would it be possible for you to include that character sheet as a print option in your magnificient character generator? He has already agreed to it. First of all I must congratulate you for this character sheet. It is a great piece of work. However, I would like to suggest a change. I have found that an image of the character helps the players get "into character" more easily and avoids having to describe the species it belongs to in case they are not familiar with it.

Maybe rearranging something in the first pages allows for including an space for an image. Unfortunately my knowledge does not allow me to do it.Could you possibly include in the first or second pages of the character sheet a space for a character image? Something similar in dimensions to the Character Description box you have included and maybe instead of it.

    Thanks in advance.

My group was looking for a PDF they could fill out and share digitally over dropbox/etc.  I found one and modified it to provide a little more flexibility and convenience when filling out the form and wanted to offer it here in case others were interested as well.

Based of DylanRPG's original form fillable character sheet PDF with some (a lot...) adjustments and changes.

Sheets and variants are at the bottom of this post.

Updated! Char Sheet v4 and Vehicle Sheet v1

    Vehicle v1
Added base functionality as well as High Contrast/Low ink use version of Vehicle sheet
    Char v4
Modified 2nd page from the Core Book standard character sheet to include several new form fields Added 3rd page with extra talent spaces and large area for notes/additional gear/background information NEW Higher Contrast version to help save on Ink Cartridges if you'd like to print the sheet (I don't have a printer so let me know how this one works out) Adjustments to Obligation and Motivation box layout Re-optimized, both character sheets are around ~800kb
    Char v3
Improved performance Drastically decreased filesize (by almost 2mb!)
    Char v2
Added Auto-Dice generation based on stats/skills. (thanks for the inspiration Kallabaca) Generally improved some issues with alignment General improvements to appeal Updated PDF pages with higher res character sheets from FFG's website (using the same pdf style as found in the back of the core book, this resulted in a loss of the "critical injury" box in place of "Other" distinguishing features)
    Char v1
Fixed Tab order issues (you should be able to hit tab and correctly progress to the next logical form field) Added form fields for each section and subsection (i.e. weapon, damage, range, crit, special, etc for weapons) Check boxes for skills Improved alignment of form fields

    Tested on
PC/Mac iOS (note: Adobe Reader app (free) highly suggested as the 'lite' pdf readers in Dropbox and other apps do not display any custom forms or their data, resulting in a "blank" character sheet) iOS note 2: Adobe Reader App will correctly display the filled out sheets, but does not run the javascript necessary to update it.  As such any changes (in order to take advantage of the auto-dice) will have to be done in an appropriate program.
