  1. Even though the rules for moving your playing piece state to pick it up and move it to the end of the template, I think it is pretty obvious thatthe spirit of play is that the ship is following the maneuver template.  While I can understand that a micron of space where the ship ends its movement would be hard to judge, i think it is obvious that if you place a hard 3 on the table and the 90' point of the turn is off the table, the ship left the playing surface and is destroyed.

  2. The problem with 3-D models is that in the rules you can end your movement overlapping an asteroid unlike another fighter, so it would have its dificulties.

I had no qualms about buying extra core sets.  I've got three and plan on buying a fourth just for the extra ships and dice.  Having played a game with all of the asteroid counters I must say it was a lot of fun.

I appreciate these points, especially those of DavicusPrime and R2D2.  But, it still seems like there would be room for Force points for these two characters.  Obviously too late for this game, but I might give them a try in some of my games at home.  Maybe they will end up being too powerful, but I'm hoping not (especially since both sides would potentially have access to them via Vader and Luke -- but, maybe that is the problem… they would probably be auto-includes if they had FP and no one else did, though since I've not had a chance to play the game yet, it's quite possible that that is the case already).

I think this is the most important point to note.  It's not a condemnation at all, so please take no offense.  I think once you've played the game a dozen or so times as is (at least), you may be in a better place to determine whether or not the rules need any tinkering.  It's fun to imagine different ways of playing the game, but IMHO, until you actually get some games under your belt and play it the way the designers intended, it is extremely difficult to improve the game.

  5. When I had my own game store from 2002-2005 mass market stores regularly received product and had it on the shelves before its official release date.  This happened to us with LOTR stuff and Barnes & Noble.  They aren't supposed to release it till a certain date, but they are so big people don't bother them, which is why I looked for this game at Target when I was there today!  No luck at the one by my house, but according to the locator there are some available within a few miles here in St. Louis.

  6. I've played about 10-12 games so far.  We have played on everything from a bar table at GenCon, to a slick table cloth, to painted plywood, and a felt game mat.  We have had ZERO problems with the miniatures falling over or moving from play.  We had one game with 18-20 fighters on the board and had no problems.  I really don't think this is as big an issue as you may think.

Yeah, looks like I misinterpreted that. I thought there was a distinction between scoring a hit & dealing damage.

Regarding Biggs though, I meant having him in an X-wing with R2D2 to draw fire, not having him in an Y-wing.

Anyway, if it doesn't bypass shields I don't think it's overpowered, for that reason and the rest listed above (limited damage and range, expensive, etc.).

The damage doesn't bypass the shields, but the ION Effect does, regardless of damage inflicted to the hull.

The X-wing and TIE fighters only have atmospheric combat capabilites in the EU.  They are never shown to be able to fight in an atmosphere.  X-wing take off and land from planets (well, usually moons) but they never open their s-foils.

If X-wings had atmospheric combat capabilities, then why didn't they use thgem against the AT-ATs in the Battle of Hoth.  A couple of proton torpedoes per AT-AT could have stoped the Imperial advance in its tracks.

I would love to see an atmospheric game with speeders and AT-ATs and the like, but like with capital ships I think it should be its own game.

Just because they are not shown doing so in the movie, does not mean they did not have the capability.  They presumably only had enough X-Wings to send two with each transport (news which provoked one of my favorite and oft quoted lines, "two x-wings against a star destroyer?"), plus Luke's.  Otherwise one would assume they would have sent more with each transport.  I mean no one is shown using the bathroom in any of the movies either, but I think since it is not stated that they didn't, one can assume they do. gran_risa.gif

Not to mention, Hoth was a remote base that they had prepared to evacuate.  Maybe they didn't have a large number of X-Wings available there, or maybe they deemed them too valuable an asset to risk against overwhelming odds in a battle in which their entire goal was to execute a fighting withdrawl.

There is a video game of the Battle of Hoth that has Tie Fighters straffing ground targets and X-Wings flying cover and shooting them down.  Granted it isn't movie-cannon, but it's licensed by Lucasfilm Ltd, so I would assume they approve.

  9. Having played about ten times so far, four times this week, I agree simultaneous movement breaks a lot of built-in mechanics.  Playing Imps in my last game I had a T-Adv at PS4 and 4 T-Fgtrs at PS1 for 75 points (it was a 4-player 150-point/side game).  I consistently had to guess whether I should focus or evade and about 50% of the time I was wrong, but that is the gamble new pilots make.  They are shaky.

Second, a crash is not a crash.  I interpret the rules as the "colliding" pilot loses his action because he is busy avoiding said collision.  Yes, in reality ships could collide, but if you allowed players to kamikaze it would break the game.  So I read it as they are in an "oh $&!^" moment and thus lose the turn's available action while they take the "action" of evasive manuvers to avoid striking the other ship.

  10. I have a purple and clear two tier jewelery case I found at Hobby Lobby in the bead section.  I have 19 ships in it currently, plus all my counters.  I use a paint tub for the cards, rulers, etc.  Works great.

  11. Don't forget that the X-Wings are atmospheric fighters as well, so having wings is advantageous.

So, basically the ION Effect occurs regardless of shileds, but the shields do prevent the hull damage?
