  1. thanks for the compliments!

It worked out about £30 all in and about 5 hours of work … probably could have been cheaper if I hadnt sprayed 2 small test boards. On the plus side I still have materials left over (enough to make another 3x3 board..)

Seems far more sensible than spending some ridiculous amount on a felt mat…

only thing I need to figure out is what spray I can use to seal over the paint (though it shows no signs of flaking etc currently). Some kind of varnish which wont make the board too wet when applied (so theres no chance of colour blending!

  2. Pictures of my homemade gaming board. Its 16 1x1 ft hardboard squares, painted with layers of spray paint and light glitter/shimmer spray. Then tiny details were added by hand (rings etc). I chose to make the board modular like this to allow me to adjust table size easily to suit a variety of shapes.

this is a couple of close up pictures, a few full size photos (4x4ft) and a close up short moving video (the shimmer wasnt showing on the photos)!

The truth is that Star Wars if FICTIONAL.  There is a varying degree of effort to make Star Wars Consistent with itself.  But the very fact that it just isn't real make the whole idea of cannon sort of silly when taken to exctreem.

My wife asked me last night, why Mace Windo couldn't just go beat up all the battle droids (we were watching Clone Wars, but she was used to the Clone Wars shorts).

erm… theres no point in talking about canon if you are referring to facts! doesnt mean something cant be internally cohesive…

Anyone else wish they could get their hands on these models and have a go at playing X-wing at this scale? I DO!

I think it would be easy enough to do a home brew map campaign or escalation style league game play.

Once the Falcon comes out, I've got a few ideas for campaigns concerning asteroids… :)

How will you make a play surface which is 18 parsecs long?

oh no wait.. youll be able to do it in 12! :)

  6. from what I remember reading on the Slave-1, it will have bombs. So I expect that the bomber class will have a higher hull strength, be slower, less agile, have bombs, a more powerful primary weapon and perhaps something along the lines of missiles, like you suggest.

Id be interested to see if they would somehow represent the gyroscopic cockpit. It should make targetting easier, but if i remember right, would sometimes get locked in position and cause serious problems for the pilot.. perhaps it might allow you to fire whilst in contact or something…

Also, as they have already "previewed" turrets as part of a mission (on the death star table), perhaps wave 3 will see some added 'ground; targets wich would require bombs or be more easily destroyed using them?

Also, the tie bomber seems a little outclassed by a B-wing, which is a more general assault ship, as opposed to a single task bomber… not sure how they would account for this..

  7. Whendid they say this? I ask because their facebook page has a new comment a couple of days ago saying that they should begin shipping to FLGSs on the 24th….. (it was the 27th but they revised this date!)

Lets both hope for the earlier date!

@R2D2, you have misquoted me, I did not type those things, those things were directed at me after I had been quoted.  Not nitpicking here but I don't want others to think I am an argumentative arse.

As I also live in the UK I have resigned myself to expect this game at some point before xmas, rather than before my SW mad son's birthday which was on Sunday just gone.

    Thanks FFG.

Apologies for the shortsighted quote error. DOnt know if youve heard ( I assume you have) but new uk release date seems to be next monday (24th) so it should be hitting local stores next week sometime! (unless some unforseen fire tornado destroys all the stock or something).

p.s dont suppose you are in London? looking for people to play the game with outside my gaming group of friends!

  9. awesome… how big are the tiles?

Im currently building a deep space board from 1x1 ft hardboard pieces, to make a modular board which I can adapt to any shape and size desired. A bit of spraypaint, paint and hand painted effects (distand swirls of galaxies etc) and I'lll be ready for the game to finally arrive (next week hopefully!)

I could always get some more hardboard cut and stick these on them!

    thanks for sharing!

  10. not sure that having asteroids react to explosions etc is a good idea… but i see no reason that they couldnt be set off initially at a large curve (to indicate it being trapped in some distant, off board gravity well…

Did you or anyone else bother to send a question through either, the Contact, User Support, Rules Questions, or Help links at the bottom of every forum page? Did anyone explicitly say they did? If not, that's your failure.

You should not expect any of the devs to randomly read a post on these forums and respond. While occasionally they will, the only way to really contact them is through the handy links at the bottom of every page.

    Yes. I did. Multiple times!

Every time I requeste dinformation regarding the upcoming section not showing correct dates (i.e showing a q2 release after q2 had finished) I got the same stock response of "All information shown on the upcoming page is accurate and up to date". This proved in every occasion (3 that I can think of off hand) to be incorrect.

They did, on one occasion, respond saying "the upcoming page will be updated in the next few days to show correct information." 2 weeks later they updated some of the information, but left the core showing as a q2 release (though it was July already).

In response to a question about release date (once target had already started selling the game on shelves) they told me that the game had not yet been released and was not yet available to buy at any retailer (though I sent them a picture of it on sale on target shelves).

In addition to this they informed me on 2 seperate occasions of a simultaneous worldwide release date in all FLGS, yet I find myself in the UK being told that the game wont be available until at least the 27th, although its clearly already been released elsewhere.

I work for a global logistics firm, so am well aware of the problems which can be encountered with transit and the issues surrounding delivery dates. However, in my industry, where a 1 day delay can mean ~$10,000,000 in lost profit for a project, we are almost always able to deliver. Getting all the X-wing sets to shops at the same time worldwide would have been a very easy task to execute, had they really wanted to. Moreover, if this wasnt going to be achieved, then they shouldnt state is as the case.

People on here have stated customs as a potential cause for delay, but customs going into big countries like the UK will rarely delay something like a board game from a US manufacturer, so this isnt really a likely cause.

I dont expect them to answer question on the forums, as I realise that this would take a lot of an employees time to trawl through and also accept that these responses could easily be missed. There is really no excuse for misleading, non factual and therefore rather aggravating information being given to fans.

Someone said earlier in this thread that manufacturers should always overestimate and then overachieve. I couldnt agree more. This is the same tactics that airlines use when they inform customers of delays (i.e they will say there is a 3 hour delay, when they believe there will be a 2 hour delay. this way they can announce the 2 hour delay as a positive thing because everyone has already settled on a 3 hour wait). There's no reason that FFG couldnt have done the same. Imagine how much happier we would all be if they had stated an october release, then said "some shops will be able to get this game a few weeks earlier!" in an update. those of us still waiting wouldnt feel that we had been misled and those who are just recieving would be positively elated.

In actuality, I imagine that the constant over optimism on release date was intentional, as it helps push sales (i.e when people think they only have 3 weeks to preorder before they might all be sold out, it pushes them to order asap and possibly to order more stock than they would otherwise, for fear of it selling out sooner). This has the knock on effect of making shops up their orders and saving FFG some money on logistics planning and feight movement. (again I am wearing my logistics hat here).

Perhaps I will feel better in 11-14 days, when I can FINALLY pick up my copy from my FLGS, barring any further "unexpected" and "unavoidable" (rarely, if ever the case) delays (there have been 3 of these for the UK so far…) but it still doesnt excuse the misinformation and lacklustre way in which this has been handled.

If my company dealt with clients and customers in this way, needless to say it would be dealt with at the highest level.

  12. So heres a thought…

If  you could get a spinner to indicate facing direction  (just an arrow on a round base to easily spin… I have one from other board games), it might be interesting to assign a random movement dial to each asteroid  (select the movement face down) and this would allow for moving asteroids.

Maybe once every two turns you spin for each asteroid and they move after all the ships movement and attacks are resolved. this would add a constantly changing tactical element to the game, making it harder to preplan and forcing players to be adaptable…

just an idea…what do poeple think?

Think I should take a break from looking on these forums daily. its becoming too painful to see that everyone else is getting their hands on it, when the UK distributor has just pushed the date back to the 27th :(

    Help me obi wan…

And somebody else spotted the game in Sweden. Let the hate flow through you..

It's enough to turn me over to the Dark Side!

If someone could tell me where in sweden…. it would almost certianly be quicker to get one sent from there to me than to wait for it to arrive here!

I work in logistics so a week delay means either: the boat has encountered rough seas (unlikely, as the original time estimated would imply that its being shipped by air, as does the fact that it has already hit sweden) or this is just a logistics/stock management cock up by ffg (they should clearly employ me to manage their logistics!)

It seems that the UK is always the last to recieve things for no discernable reason!

I would strike them down…but I fear they would become more powerful than I can possibly imagine…

    fml :(

  14.  Uk supplier just sent out a message saying it wont be available until "the 27th at the EARLIEST". Cant believe its already in sweden (which is past the uk on a plane or boat) but not here for at least 2 weeks :( that makes it been over 5 months since I preordered :(

Excellent. Thanks for the reply. I did pre-order a second starter, so I think this will solve the problem.

Actually it says in the rules that if you're just using the core set, the imperial player chooses upgrades first in a 31 point game.

I'm looking through the rules, but I don't see that anywhere. What page should I be looking at?

Page 18 "initiative whilst squad building" seems to imply what Beldar says…
