Yeah, I gotta say I'm not very pleased to see this. I mean as long as the game doesn't die out entirely I'm ok because the local scene was never going to be very big to begin with. Man, it does seem like FFG finds a way to burn me everytime I buy in to one of their systems. Warhammer Diskwars, Warhammer Quest adventure card game, now this.

Good points. I guess I was most taken aback when I saw that the Oathsworn Cavalry had no way to disengage (unless I'm missing something). I guess it makes sense thematically though that they are "Oathsworn" to stay in there until the end, not sure if they were going for that though.

I've favourably disengaged in many games, before elves.  To do fun stuff like : Clear LoS for Kari, trigger an immobilize token when they try to reclose while I clear banes, etc.  There are many times you probably should disengage or rally instead of swing in this game.

Disengaging is more of a thing with elves I believe. That's mostly because they can disengage farther out.  Leonx could do it as an unexpected move and then charge with earlier initiative or something but I have yet to attempt it.

When we get the infantry upgrades it'll make wind rune archers really good at disengaging and scooting away.

All that being said the new Terrinoth RPG does gives me some hope because it looks like they are trying to build up the IP which can only help Runewars down the line.

If you don't know what I'm talking about:

    The Diskwars Disk

    & The Invasion Card

Are we offering a 10% off coupon and tossing in a circle slicer for people who bought 'Path of the Zealot'? Jokes aside now, I'm all for recycled art as it fits intimately with the game and makes production MUCH quicker and lets the product arrive at my door much sooner. However I'm a little concerned that I'm recognizing a little bit TOO much and it spoils my expectations.  I want to open a box and be excited at what I see, but if I open a diskwars box to find my entire orc army is chainmailed together from the orc army in a game I've already played.. I could see a few people up in arms about that.

More importantly I'm wondering that if units are picked just because they have art from invasion does that mean our factions are already set in stone? Because if so then we already know off the back no matter how well the game does - we won't be seeing Bretonnia, Tomb Kings, Ogre Kingdoms or Chaos Dwarves (Not that I was seriously thinking they'd be in anyhow, because.. yeah.)
Regardless, I really hope this isn't the case I want to be excited by the prospect of having the entire diverse universe in this game in some form or another and if my idea is correct I hope that FFG will put the extra effort into making these armies from scratch.  If not, I'm still satisfied with 10 races - I suppose.

Murnaz reacted to Westonard in Thoughts on Hammer and Hold and Legions of Darkness
Played a game with my brother. He went Dwarves with a Flame Cannon, couple Thunderers for his ranged, obviously needing medium, range to be effective, and having his thunderers for support on the cannon. Then a couple rune priests, which, admittedly are needed if you don't get the piece of dwarf terrain that gives your heroes Rune Priest, an engineer, and a couple Hammerers with the Queen and Whitebeard? The second small dwarf hero.

I went Vampire Counts with the Von Carsteins, two Black Knights, two Dire Wolves, one Banshee, three Grave Guard. Terrain wise, set up was the Watchtower, Large Forest/Swamp, then both new pieces of terrain. Since brother had initiative, he went first and selected the mine side, to deploy a small or medium disk, which he set one of his thunderers in. I placed the watch tower a little bit of a distance away, but in front of it. He elected for the swamp, and set it up in the middle to try to force a bog down or bottle neck. Then I placed the Garden of Morr a little bit beyond the  swamp close to his side.

Game scenario was Rain of Arrows, which meant he was rolling 3 dice doing 4 damage with each, and then the flame cannon rolling two.

Personal objectives, he had one point per unit killed, I had to get into his deployment zone. I can't remember what he had, but I had disperse as one of my deployment cards, so I was able to set up with the Black Knights having a slight movement advantage and the dire wolves on the flanks followed by the Von Carsteins and the three grave guard in reserve.

Command cards he had the Rune of Cleaving, Shield Wall, Stand Firm, and Rally

I had Proven Champion, Raise Dead, Dark Majesty, and Beguile.

The first two turns were the two of us getting into position. With my Black Knights rushing ahead I kept the Watch Tower in between his thunderers and flame cannon to block line of sight, which was a moot point since I had deployed the watch tower just outside medium range for his mine. So while I positioned my knights and one of the dire wolves either just inside the Watch tower but out of range or to the side to block line of sight, he set up a small gun line, with his two heroes in front, supported by rune priests, and the hammerers.

We had kept our personal objectives a secret, and I used Manfred as a diversion on the second turn, and moved my second dire wolf and banshee up. When the dwarf lines started to shift, and I could see a rush to my exposed hero coming, Manfred stopped it short with his Dark Majesty, preventing him from being pinned. Then the two Knights and one dire wolf rushed into his position before he could get his shield wall set up.

I actually feel a little bad for him, since the attack came from just enough distance away that they trampled one rune smith and the male hero, Whitebeard? The second ran over Queen Helga, and my direwolves attacked his flame cannon. He used Stand Firm to give them Stalwart, but they whiffed their attack, one of the Thunderers was able to kill one of the Knights, but the second whiffed their attack as well.

In the melee phase, I wound up doing enough damage to wound Queen Helga but lost one Knight and my dire wolves.

The third round was actually the turning point. Manfred never actually reached the Gardens of Morr. Instead, he reanimated the slain Knights and sent them charging into Queen Helga, while the second moved to run over Whitebeard and one of his Hammerers. While he wound up giving the Rune of Cleaving, and Empowering Whitebeard, in addition to benefiting from his swift Counterattack, it didn't make a difference in the slightest as Isabella Von Carstein Beguiled him, both knights taking down Queen Helga and isabella taking down the hammerers she pinned.

The fourth turn, Mannfred repeated his tactic, reanimating the slain Knights, but this time sending them to run into Whitebeard, while my second Knight rampaged a bit further into his lines and trampling his second hammerer and hitting his engineer. It was then that my infantry actually started to show up, with my banshee rushing in and letting loose a soul wrenching shriek, rolling a 6 -2, doing 4 damage to his second hero, and killing the Engineer and hammerer. Isabella von Carstein regenerated from a wound she had suffered, and then attacked the Flame Cannon. She went down for good due to the combined shooting of both Thunderers, the flame Cannon whiffing its attack -again-

The fifth turn was the actual deciding turn, because he had killed three of my disks, and none of mine had gotten to any of his deployment zones, and I wasn't going to get him off the board. Ignoring all combat, my one 'living', that is, not reanimated, knight rushed into one of his deployment zones, while the tomb banshee and second dire wolf charged what remained of his army. The combat didn't really matter, one of his thunderers scattered back onto himself trying to shoot the banshees and killed himself without harming the banshees at all, and the second thunderer was unable to kill anything, since he would have had to roll two hits, and the way he was rolling tonight that was unlikely to happen, except where Isabella was concerned.

I can't remember what killed his flame cannon, while my direwolves took out his second runesmith. I honestly feel bad for him because the Flame Cannon didn't hit anything, not the enemy, not his own units, let alone kill anything. And the battle was stretched out enough that his Thunderers wound up unable to support one another effectively.

The final score was Brother 3-4, Me 5.

My advice if you are playing Order and know you are going to come up against Vampire Counts, and maybe against Chaos? Bring Grim Resolve. Being immune to fear cannot be overlooked, and while there is a scenario that gives everyone immunity to fear, you have to be second player to have the decision making, and it has to be one of the two that is drawn to choose from, so it is not a reliable alternative. And even if you get both, Grim Resolve also gives 2 counter attack strength, 3 activations, and a Steady speed.

My dream is that Thunderers might also have the new keyward that lets them fire while pinned.  That would be highly effective, and would remove one of the major weaknesses of the medium range that we have theoretically assigned to them.  It would also leave them vulnerable to their own scatter, though.

We have now debated the merits, weaknesses, and potential strategies for a unit that may not even exist.  I find myself doing this in my head on a regular basis with other units as well (i.e. Treemen, Dragon Princes, Silver Helms, White Lions, Wardancers...gee, maybe I like elves).

    I love this game!

Ignoring them could be a good option in some scenarios, but remember that although the Spearmen have a meager Strength of 3, peeling them off of any disk they are pinning could be difficult. Any disks that you throw on top of them to create a scrum will have to face their Swift Counter of 4, and their toughness of 5 gives them good survivability. This means that Spearmen could potentially be used to pin one of your more valuable disks and incapacitate them, even if they don't have the strength to eliminate them.

Given what we know about reanimate, which admittedly isn't that much, just going on what the listed tactics are, and how it is suggested they are used, my guess would be Reanimate tokens also activate the unit since they die at the end of the round. Kemmler lists will likely see a lot of skeletons in both regiments where he is a hero. It does look like the Vampire Counts might have a higher learning curve than the Dwarves to really use effectively, though the tomb guard look nasty, getting swift attack and counter attack and having their values boosted by 1 when engaged or engaging.

Edit: I also expect there is a skeleton archer unit that wasn't revealed, since at the moment Kemmler's ability has limited use if there is just one skeleton unit in game.

Finished a first week of gaming after getting the core set, and I must say I really, really like Warhammer: Discwars.

The game is very simple - the learning scenario works perfectly and we were able to jump into full 2-regiment games with confidence immediatley after. But it still feels a lot more tactical than I expected with the fixed stats due to the choice of strategy*, the ability to empower discs, and the ability to shoot into a melee (assuming it doesn't go horribly wrong with scatter results, of course....)

Most importantly, it feels like warhammer. Characters and units behave as you think they should do, and you get quite a lot of 'cinematic' moments in the game. Examples from our last game:

Tyrion challenges Archaeon. "But first," He says, "All the enhancing magic in the world!" as Teclis dumps an empowerment token and shield of saphery on him. "Right. Now, where were we? Oh yes, a 'fair fight'. Ready?" An empowered sun dragon slams into the bloodthirster, incinerating a unit of kurgan marauders as it charges. Valkia herself flies up and the bloodthirster becomes empowered, decapitating the dragon in one easy sweep. Teclis and an accompanying high mage simultaneously 'hadoken' the wounded valkia straight off the board**. Turning to high-five one another, a huge shadow spreads across both of them and the bloodthirster flies over the battle line and drops from a great height and lands one foot on each of them. (Turns out they weren't quite as far apart as intended)
Having great fun, and really looking forward to Hammer and Hold. Considering a secont core set too, so we can play Strongholds missions.

*I swear on the last turn last night we spent more time staring at one another over a command deck playing mental poker over strategy choice than we did flipping discs!

** Teclis. Just as nasty as in Warhammer FB. But slightly more balanced.

I couldn't be happier about this game's existence. I decided not too long ago that I couldn't keep up with the costs of Warhammer Fantasy and this has filled the wargaming void in my life. I just hope that the game does well enough to justify lots and lots of expansions.

I'm completely obsessed with the game myself.  At least in my games, I've had a really hard time winning with the Empire, they feel like they're going to be an activation/movement shennanigans faction, but I don't quite have them working yet, and they're lacking in the big stompy unit area (no dragon, troll, etc.).

On the flip side, I tried a tricksy Chaos deck (I really wanted to pull off a bloodthirster summoning onto a bunch of units), but I was dumb and chose the Charge scenario...against the Orcs.  It did not go well for me, so I think I tried to play them trickier than necessary and should have gone more stompy.

It seems really well balanced overall, and the command cards in particular seem really important for mind games and who goes when.
