Bhelliom got a reaction from hakooh in Daqan Expansion Ideas
    Thanks for the posts!
As far as I'm concerned, Crossbows are probably THE defining faction strength in Daqan. Their dial is great, they get the perfect upgrades, and the 3x1 is extremely efficient. Kari, despite her flaws, is also a very powerful ranged threat. I would be extremely careful about giving Daqan any more ranged effects, or they could tip into that horrible gunline zone. Personally, I was always more interested in the aggressive elements of the list:
Scouts - I didn't get all that much play in with Scouts, but my experience was they're more cool than good. The 2x2 and 3x2 have some very cool options for champion upgrades, and their dial is ostensibly good, I just found they got clowned on by Wraiths. Oathsworn - good at charging straight ahead and fighting a fair fight. Something that changes the way Impact works could be neat, or maybe an upgrade that gives them panic if they're not engaged and inspiration if they are. Really emphasize that impetuousness. Spearmen - sort of count as aggressive. Their dial is incredibly strong and flexible, especially with the infantry command upgrades, but they don't really DO all that much. I always felt like they should have something more specific to their spears - free attack when being charged, immune to Impact, perhaps +1 threat if they have two full ranks. Hawthorne - could use a unique or artifact to make him more fun to use. The thorns build is neat, but doesn't have the teeth to not be ignored. His dial is incredible and feels amazing to use, but then he gets in combat and... not much. Rune Golems - generally not aggressive, but certainly dangerous looking. I've written at some length here. They're pretty all over the place, but a lot of fun with the theme of golems. I'd definitely like to see a Daqan artifact that rewards front-line hero play. Something like spend an inspiration token during a melee attack to give all friendlies at range 1-3 Lethal for the rest of the round? Some sort of challenge blade perhaps, that lets you peek at your target's dial and if they don't have a melee attack dialed in you get bonus damage? It doesn't need to be as powerful as Dimodian Blades, but something in a similar "generally useful offensive item" vein would be cool.

    Folks,
So, let’s start talking about what you’d like to see in my Daqan expansion.  To get the discussion going, I’d like to capture folks ideas on strengths, weaknesses, and things you think will be fun.
Feel free to share your idea for a card or two- all efforts will be credited where possible

So, it’s been nearly 4 months since FFG dropped support for Runewars leaving it to us, the fans, to do what we like with the game.  Being a gamer of over 40 years but relatively new to Runewars, I thought I would take a bit to sit back and get the lay of the land before jumping in.
What I’ve noticed is that there’s still a lot of us talking about the game whenever possible, but there’s just not that much to talk about, so I aim to rectify that by giving us something new to talk about.
Yes, that’s right, I’ve been working for about 3 months on what I believe will be the first “Fan-Made” expansion for Runewars- more on that in a moment.
Why am I doing this?  Well, because I love the game and see no reason to stop playing.  Gaming is a very different hobby these days.  With easy access to digital  tools, we can create a lot of content to share amongst fans.  Several CCG’s have done this with great success- I think of the Star Wars: TCG from Wizards (they have like 15 expansions) and the Star Trek: CCG from Decipher (I think they have even more).
This should create a very positive environment for the game to exist.  Whether it thrives or not is up to us.  When we talk to new players, I recommend we tell them the following:
The game is a good solid game with very asymmetric factions that are fun to collect and paint. The figures are still available and cheap- people are selling entire armies on eBay and anything you can’t find on Amazon can be found on the FFG website There’s new content being created so any investment you make will not be wasted, instead it will be rewarded with enjoyment There are tournaments running across the US this year with no intention of stopping The guys working on this expansion are working on new races using other commercially available figures In the end, if we have a local group that’s having fun, who cares what anyone else thinks? So, getting back to the purpose of this message.  I have an outline for a narrative expansion with a working title, “The Alignment: War for the Shards of Timmoran”.  This would be a card-only expansion (obviously) to get us up and running.  We need to build credibility within the community that we’re serious about this and having something with a deliverable is critical to that effort.
Most importantly, this content would be shared throughout the community for free to ensure that we are not violating any of FFG’s hard work.  After all, we are all appreciative of the company and the great games they’ve released over the years.  If anything, this expansion will hopefully help them sell down existing stock, possibly leading to reprints or a (gasp!) 2nd edition...
With that, here’s my thoughts on what to include in the expansion.
Unique units - This would be a card attached to a unit of a specific size, typically one that is not played that often or in the mid-range of possible sizes giving it unique flavor and ability with possibly different allowed upgrades Alternate units - This would be a modification of the existing unit regardless of size for the same points value to minimize any record keeping. Race-Specific upgrade cards - At least 2 cards for each type for each faction. Generic upgrade cards - At least 4 cards of each type that each faction can use. Alternate Hero-Specific upgrade cards - At least 2 cards for each hero to give them new builds Race-Specific Abilities - I love how Overgrowth further defines the Latari from the other races and have abilities for Daqan and Waiqar already designed.  These abilities are woven through the various upgrade cards to give even more army building options. New Terrain Cards - Variants for the existing terrain cards if folks think they’re needed. Campaign System - I have to admit, I was truly inspired by @Viktus106 narrative for an expansion and ideas of how to create a campaign where both sides are searching for the Shards of Timmorran revealed during a period of time when the forces of magic aligned (“The Alignment”) to reveal them.  As those Shards are discovered by each side, new powers are unlocked leading to more epic battles. As you can see, there’s quite a bit going on here and I can’t do it by myself.  So, I’m asking for any volunteers to pitch it, specifically in the following areas:
Design - Here’s the good news, I have over 80 upgrade cards, new units, & unique units ready for review today with another 40-50 in process.  I would like to introduce a unique mechanic for each race that further defines them This does not mean that everything has been decided, quite the opposite, it gives us something to react to and improve upon with some valued community feedback. Playtesting - We all saw what happened with a some of the Uthuk stuff and we don’t want a repeat.  More playtesters will help... Graphic Layout - I’m a scientist, not skilled in digital layout (beyond cut & paste), so if anyone can assist with putting the card text onto the appropriate images, it will help create a more polished set and facilitate playtesting Narrative Campaign Story - I’ve seen some people on the group who are obviously inspired to write.  If this appeals to you, please reach out to me. Campaign System - This is a lower priority item, but I’m thinking of a more narrative system that doesn’t create uneven forces after just a couple of battles (like Corellian Conflict for you Armada players). Community Support - This is one of the easiest.  Tell your friends, keep them playing and try to rope in a couple of new ones along the way.  Setting a regular night to play, but realizing that folks have lives and that sometimes you’ll get a bunch and other nights, you’ll have to cancel.  We just aren’t as big as some other games- that’s OK, we make up for it with our commitment. I think to start, I’d like to get folks thoughts on the strengths/weaknesses, and most desired things for an expansion.  Feel free to suggest a card or two along the way- all suggestions will be credited where possible.
I’m thinking that the first step is to get some feedback from the veteran players here, revise the package, and then put it here on the forum for playtesting and feedback.
In the end, I don’t expect everyone to agree on everything.  This is a fan expansion for the fans and people will choose to use what they like.  Also, I’m not trying to necessarily balance or “fix” the game.  That’s being handled by @Bhelliom Regardless, all I can say is that I’m committed to the end result and will deliver something that is professional and enjoyable for all of us.

Hey Everyone!  Save the date,  we are having a Runewars tournament in Madison, WI on June 8th, located at the Sun Prairie I'm Board games and family fun store.  Registration will begin at 10:00 AM, Set dials and roll dice from 11-7.  Entry fee is $10
    Here are the official bits:
Standard 200 point army format. The tournament will be 3 swiss rounds.

Prize support will be store credit split up amongst the top 3 places. We will also be handing out alternate art cards to each player after every round and an additional alternate art card or set of tokens for each winner. These will be from previous quarterly kits.

For the tournament, we will use:
    Conquest
    Encircling Maneuvers
    Hunter’s Quarry

    Forward Scouts
    Oblique Formation
    Overextended

We are also going to use two rules changes/errata:
A unit that performs a movement (shift or march) that would make that unit overlap or touch terrain can enter that terrain even if it was already touching that terrain. A unit cannot enter or exit terrain outside of its own activation. This means the movements caused by Scuttling Horror, Insatiable Hunger, and Etharyon of the Ailatar cannot cause a unit to leave terrain as they occur outside of the unit’s activation.
If either rules change is confusing or you want clarification, contact Church14 or Jukey on the FFG forums or email events@imboard.com
This is tentatively going to be the first Tournament of the Midwest League,  something I have been working on getting up and running.  Basically, the plan is to have quarterly tournaments around the midwest area.  If anyone is interested in hosting a location please PM me.  Looking forward to seeing you all at the event!

With heavily discounted starter boxes, anything not in them is going to feel bad. At $36 per expansion, it's in line with Runewars (3 trays instead of 2 per box) so if you want to field a big unit of new unit, it's going to cost.

It certainly does slow things, and in many cases the attrition rate is insurmountable, but there are a whole swath of boutique minis games out there, some whose parent companies are long dead, which continue to see regular play in many areas. Epic 40k, for example, for which official models have not been available for years, has an oddly thriving worldwide playerbase. Obviously that's partially due to its strong IP, but the fact remains that minis games exist in a weird intersection of game and hobby, so when people invest time and love into an army it can gain legs beyond its actual support.
I'm not trying to argue that the end of official support won't hurt the playerbase, but existing metas will be able to weather it to some extent.

Hello community! Pursuant to my balance survey, I've put together a package of suggested changes to improve the health of the game. Some are small, sensible, and crowd-sourced, others are larger and more controversial, reinforcing my perceptions of design intent and unit theme. This thread is meant to be a place to share playtest experience more than suggestions for ways to change units, but I'm not a cop, follow your heart.
I am concerned that I'm trying for too many changes all at once, but I feel pretty strongly about them all. Outside of Latari, any given list is likely to encounter one or two of them, plus the blanket change to terrain, so I feel it should be manageable.
Realistically, we need an impossible amount of feedback to get a real sense of certification for any changes, but I'll take whatever you feel like giving me! As a rough guideline, here's a format to help figure things out:

Bhelliom reacted to Church14 in Community Results tracking sheet
Alright all, I've gotten the time to hammer this together. In essence, I'm going to do to Runewars what the Twilight Imperium 4th edition community did. Below is a link to a submission form. If you play a game, fill this out and it'll go in the sheet.
    https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfYwCrD047OLCiNO074AxpzbxEyNjxKob6fCcsUIK6ReOtUXw/viewform?usp=sf_link
If there are clear typos, or people using the survey see a clearer way to phrase a question, let me know. I want this to be intuitive and effective. I do not care if that means I need a lesson in oxford commas or run-on sentences.

A few questions in the form might not be straightforward. So as best I can predict, here's a FAQ.
    Q) What are tournament points or how do I calculate them?
    A) Tournament points are a way to simplify results. Basically, find the difference between the winner’s and  loser’s scores. This is MoV. Look below for MoV to tournament score
    MoV: 0-29, Winner gets 6, loser 5
    MoV: 30-69, Winner gets 7 loser 4
    MoV: 70-109, Winner 8, loser 3
    MoV: 110-149, Winner 9, loser 2
    MoV 150-200, Winner 10, loser 1
    Q) What is the community errata question about?
    A) Belliom has a suggested balance package. It is a short list of suggested changes for units that appear to be over or underperforming. For this question though, if you are using the balance package but none of the units in either army are affected by it, please answer NO. I understand that not everyone agrees with every suggestion, but for the sake of making the tracking sheet at all useful, please use all of them or none. Belliom's balance package here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hPBMosCx5xBfYTCyNODjzB-1Wkoy-qrUCbrFk1dn-KI/edit

    Q) What do these list archetypes mean?
    A) See a lot of links below

    Q) What if a list fits the description of multiple archetypes?
    A) Choose the archetype that fits the performance on the table best. There will probably be overlap between certain archetypes. For example, "Bunker" and "Balanced." If you bring a list that seems to straddle between those two, but your opponent brought a bunker and you decided to go on offense, select "Balanced." If your opponent brought an Uthuk list that crossed the table in a turn and you just hunkered down, select "Bunker." Yes, EVERYTHING SHANE BUILDS IS PROBABLY "OTHER."

    List Archetype Examples (in progress):
    Balanced (A bit of everything)
Baneslinger/BoonSlinger (A list reliant on putting up enough banes to gum up an opponent. Think 2X corruption runes)
Bunker (A list designed to sit back and let opponents come to them)
    Waiqar Example: http://tabletopadmiral.com/runewars/undead/p072u0ep072u0ep101u3du3ap0f2u27uEMu0ep1a1ua3ub0
    MSU (Lots of little things)
Offensive Death Star (Typically a hero, a single death star, and 2+ supporting units to cover flanks)
    Uthuk Example: http://tabletopadmiral.com/runewars/uthuk/p141u85u75p124uEMu27u59u54u51p152u8bp153uEMu8b
Spam (Lots of one thing. For the most part, this is threshers)
    Uthuk Example: http://tabletopadmiral.com/runewars/uthuk/p152u8bp152u8bp152u8bp152u8bp152u8bp152u8b
KariThorn (uses Hawthorne and Kari to bring in 4x1 Oathsworn and 4x1 deepwoods)
    Example: http://tabletopadmiral.com/runewars/human/p022uEMuEMu0ep022uEMuEMu0ep0e1u32u31p061u3duEMp0b2u13uEMuEMuEM

    Luke,
First of all, thanks for taking your personal time to put together the survey and suggest some well-thought changes.  I particularly enjoyed reading your rationale behind the changes.  It’s so coindicental as we played tonight and I had Kari, some scouts, 2-3x1 Crossbows with Rank and Wind Rune, and a 2x1 Golem.
Here’s how the changes would have affected our game:
    1) The points difference would have been a net increase of 2 points effectively removing my 2 point bid.  Any further points increase in the Crossbowmen would have forced me to remove an upgrade somewhere else.
    2) My bid allowed me to choose the scenario, ignoring one that would have been disastrous for me.
    3) We called the game after 7 turns.  During that time, we had 2 turns with 2 green runes.  One of those turns was early in the game when the Golems weren’t engaged.  The one turn I was engaged, I rolled two hits with 4 threat, didn’t need the re-roll
I will file a report in Church’s spreadsheet to help collect data.
    Thanks again for your efforts...

Here’s my list for those interested.

I have a tracking sheet far enough along that I can probably at least get people entering values. The data analysis side is pretty bare yet. Just tables showing score distributions overall and against specific factions. Nothing granular yet.

I’m going to see if I can set up a submission form for people to fill out that can auto populate into the sheet

I definitely agree on the I7, that introduces a bunch of cool gameplay.
Warsprinter introduces a bunch of very good action economy, and it's very difficult to add sensible restrictions without also stripping the stuff that makes it good. I wonder if it just needs to cost 7-8 points, make it a real risk to take. Then again one of the things I'm complaining about is how swingy it is in tournament play, so that doesn't really help that issue!
It's awkward, but how about this: "When you reveal your dial, you may perform a speed-[unstable] march. If you do, cancel your modifier dial." It eliminates the reform+charge, but is probably too limiting when combined with the proposed Aggressive change, and also opens the possibility of charge+attack, which might be even worse than the current combo! Also charge+disengage. Yeah, let's not do this.

This is a good point! I suspect that if Aggresive Warsprinter were nerfed, we'd basically stop seeing Berserkers. I would want to redistribute some of their power away from that specific combo and into the core unit itself. I still want the unit to be good, just randomly game-winning charges and 360 degree threat projection are very unhealthy for a competitive maneuvering game.
Do you have any suggestions to improve the unit outside of those two upgrades?

It's a tough call. I've also been thinking about one of the easiest expansions to make, the cavalry command, and how sweet (though potentially unhealthy) it would feel to charge Oathsworn 6. My issues with the Aggressive + Warsprinter are:
The unit has a lot of hitting power, so being able to charge 7 can swing games HARD. I like how lethal this game is, but that much impact relying on a toss of the runes feels bad. I suspect we might start seeing the same thing if Golems become good - currently, Golems have a fairly limited impact, so that surprise clutch charge isn't devastating, but the Berserker star is another matter. Just too swingy. Three turns out of four, the unit can reform and charge 2 at initiative 3. Charging 2 at 3 is pretty much the gold standard in this game, and doing it in any direction (maybe even picking up a flank!) means they virtually cannot be outmaneuvered. One design principle that shows in Uthuk is "fast in a straight line, clumsy in turns" and this violates that badly. It's one thing if a powerful unit can plow ahead full speed, but outmaneuvering should always be rewarding. Similar to my issue with the scuttle disengaging from a flank charge.

Greg at rebel light works is working on some kits to replace ffg op as well, I'm sure he could help!

Hm, when the golem charges it makes fine sense, but I feel less good about the theme of the golem being charged and handing out a stun. Plus, it feels weirdly doubled up with the skill action and copy/pasted from Scions...
As for gameplay, it certainly wouldn't hurt, though if a golem is getting charged it almost assuredly needs to armor up next turn. Nice on the charge, but those are tough to set up.
Overall, I think I prefer a pure damage buff in the vein of reroll 1 die if there are at least two natural runes. Loops that third rune in like it seems it should.

Hello all! With all the talk of community errata going forward, I put together a survey to help identify the problem spots. Hopefully it will give us an idea of the absolute worst offenders out there so we can figure out exactly what to do with them!
