  1. The ion cannon can truly be a "game changer".  you can keep pesky fighters off your back, albeit at close range; and if you have the "perfect shot", you can make those pesky fighters slam into nearby asteroids, or other ships, with disastrous effects.

In hindsight, I just wish I had put one Dutch's Y-Wing during the Inaugural Tournament at Gen Con.  Now I know . . . . :)

  2. Nice pic.  That's a nice storage option there.  Though, I would like to see FFG put some larger storage options (big enough for the larger sculpts), with "Wave 2" coming this Holiday Season, 'n all.  Until then, I might consider getting something along those lines.

I'm wondering if the co-pilot will be an essential part of the crew, meaning you MUST take a co-pilot, with their own sets of options.

Hypothetical example, or, how I would have done it.

So Han's YT1300 is the Falcon say at 50pts and comes with shields, weapons, actions etc, as well as other optional upgrades (like a second turret) much as we've already seen on the starfighters.  Lando's YT1300 is also the Falcon (45pts) but has different equipment, actions as well as upgrades.  You could also get a  Rebel Sympathiser whose YT1300 is not the Falcon (40pts).

Choice of co-pilots, for example, Chewie + 6pts, Leia +4pts.  Chewie would bring different upgrade options and possible actions to what Leia would.

Perhaps choices of Co-pilots would be pilot specific, so Lando could choose Chewie and Nien Nunb, but not Leia.

    Just my tuppence worth.

The big question in my mind is would the 'listing to the left' maneuver be a Han Solo specific action or included on the dial?

Nice.  Chewie should also be able to repair (shield) damage to the Falcon.

With the co-pilot (game) mechanic no one has mentioned the Falcon's dorsal and ventral quad turbo laser turrets.  Leia has been known to climb into a gun well with Han (taking the the other well [What do you think I meant? :) ], and Chewie taking the controls.

I could also see the quads being controlled by an "unnamed character" to simplify things.

  4. The RPG, Edge of the Empire, is an OPEN BETA.  I believe it is due out in September, along with "everything else".  So don't worry about being shut out.  FFG only  asks us to provide feedback via Edge of the Empire forums.

    Good luck, and have fun.

  5. It's also available on Google Play for $4.99 as well.  I'm downloading it to my smartphone right now.

I agree, to some extent.  It does, however, encompass all of the games FFG has out -- X-Wing and Edge of the Empire RPG BETA,  So that is a plus.

  6. After staying up until 3:00am, Friday morning, building my squad for the Inaugural Tournament later that morning; it donned on me that FFG needs to come up with an online squad builder, and/or an iOS/Android app.

I eventually tried one of the "sample" squads that FFG posted online just before the con, with not-so-great results.

I finally decided to run: Biggs Darlighter w/ R2D2 and a Proton Torpedo, "Dutch" Vander w/ R5K6 and 2 Proton Torpedoes, and Garvin Dries w/ R2F2 and a Proton Torpedo.  In hindsight, I should have dropped one torpedo (4 points) for "Dutch", and added the ion cannon (5 points).  Now I know, . . . .

All and all, it was a fun experience.  Can't wait for WAVE 2 to drop.

  7. Paper!  Even if you laminate the (paper) mat, there will be "slippage".  I'd rather spend a few bucks, and take the slippage of the pieces out of the equation.  That's just my take.

  8. I would indeed.

If Fantasy Flight does not come through on a "sanctioned" play mat, and you want something a bit more than a store-bought felt, you might try this website (I found this site posted here on the FFG X-Wing forums a couple o' weeks ago)

  9. If they were to release capital ship expansion packs, I, for one, would want it to be capital ship v. capital ship.  If FFG was to combine the scales -- "snub" fighters v. capital ships, I would want it as a scenario with fighters v. turret emplacements (like the asteroid markers, but with stat cards), with the game mat as the surface of the capital ship in question .  That could also work for a "Trench Run" scenario.

There really isn't much you can do. The doors to the exhibition hall open at 10am and then it's a mad dash to the FFG booth. The best you can do is go to the GenCon website and review where the entrances are in relation to the FFG booth, then camp out at that entrance.

The Fantasy Flight "area" -- FFG has seven "stations", is at the front of the hall ("Entrance 'I'"). My guess Star Wars will be in one of the two larger ones

  11. I just received this email from Gen Con Events, informing tourney attendees of a change to the duration.

    To all X-WIng™ competitors:

Due to an update in the tournament rules, we are extending the round length from 60 minutes to 75 minutes. This moves the end of the preliminary rounds from 4 PM to just after 6PM, with single-elimination rounds for the Top 8 following. Please direct any questions or comments to swilson@fantasyflightgames.com.

    Thank you,

This may draw some ire from those who might want to either drop out, or decide not to enter the tournament all together -- the whole day is shot to hell.  I'm still on the fence whether I want to drop out (and get a refund -- I "pre-registered" for the tourney, and still hope for the best for FFG).  We'll see what I do, when I get there.

I hope that they give us a deal on the starter pack.

Why would they discount a sure sell?

I would love them to give attendees a discount.  They only way I could see them do that is with some sort of card -- play X amount of demos at the con, and receive a $5 discount on the core set.  Heck, the real money is with the expansions -- $15.00/expansion; expansions just have one ship and cards, I believe.
